Abstract

This article aims to explain how cultural transmission occurs in the flowof globalization through the TikTok application. The culture is referred toas Minangkabau culture. People identifying themselves as Minangkabaupopulate the contemporary Indonesian province of West Sumatra and arefound in immigrant communities throughout the archipelago, Malaysia,Australia, and further afield, and they are known for their Islamic piety, matrilineal kinship system, astute trading abilities, proclivity to migrate, democratic practices, and spicy food (Fraser J. A., 2015, p. 3). Thisresearch focuses on Pop Minang, a genre of regional language songs usedin content on the TikTok application. Songs that are broadcast on the socialmedia application TikTok also become transmitters of traditional culturefor the younger generation in that culture and even the cultures of otherpeoples. The results of this study are in contrast to previous studies, whichclaim that TikTok and globalization have a negative impact on the youngergeneration (Kurniawan, 2018; Sairin, 2004) and support the opinion thatglobalization is a process of glocalization or the interaction and mergerbetween local cultures and global processes (Turner, 2015, p. 5).

Abstract

This article aims to explain state regulations and media perspectives in Muslim-majority countries in Southeast Asia regarding the use of the hijab as a religious symbol in public spaces. The influence of globalization has increased diversity in the media landscape in the public sphere, going beyond traditional face-to-face interactions and encompassing the vast realm of the Internet. While Muslim women in secular Western countries face bans on wearing the hijab in public spaces, Muslim women in Muslim-majority countries in Southeast Asia face challenges regarding their style of wearing the hijab in public spaces. This research is qualitative research based on the study of public space and religion. The analysis was carried out in three Southeast Asian countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam, which have Muslim populations with different characteristics. Indonesia and Malaysia are multicultural regions but are dominated by Muslims, and Brunei is a country with a Muslim majority. These three countries have different patterns of managing religion in public spaces. Religious symbols in public spaces reflect the relationship between public space phenomena, the state, and the social context in a region. Social media has expanded the public sphere, providing greater opportunities for religious groups to present their arguments or engage in da'wah (religious outreach).

The research was conducted using qualitative methods in the context of studying religious education and society. The research subjects are Indonesian Muslim families in Korea who have school-age children and attend Korean public schools. The object of research is about religious habituation towards religion before and during the Covid-19 pandemic, namely in the 2020-2021 timeframe. The results showed that there was an increase in the quantity and quality of habituation of religious teachings in Muslim children from Indonesia living in Korea. The increase was obtained from a comparison before and when the Covid-19 pandemic took place. This is due to school policies at home, social distancing, and a ban on feeding in schools during the Covid-19 pandemic.
