It comprised the religious values between human and God, the religious values between human and human, as well as the religious values between human and himself/herself which were available in that novel. The method used in this research was a qualitative descriptive method, which analysed sentence by sentence concerning the religious values. Then, the data that have been collected were identified, analysed, described and interpreted based on the objectives that have been considered. Descriptive qualitative research was used because the data were collected in the form of words, and it also gave priority to the deepest understanding toward the interaction found between the concepts which were studied empirically. The results showed that the religious values that were described in this novel were the forms of religious values between human and God which comprised piety and trust; the religious values between human with human which comprised respect, helpful, forgiving, colloquy and good manners; as well as the religious values between human and himself/herself which comprised patient, humble, honest/trustworthy, sincere and disciplined. Hopefully, this novel could be useful for the readers and could be the inspiration for the young generation in gaining their future without forgetting the religious values.

Abstract

The present study aims to explore Indonesian EFL teachers’ perception regarding the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) usage for developing cultural awareness of students as well as improving their English literacy and communication. Even though English subject is not considered as compulsory to be taught in elementary school, there is evidence that English is still being taught either as the local content subject or as the language-medium of instruction. This study employs survey research by administering a questionnaire for elementary school English teachers in Indonesia who have been ever implementing online learning. The result shows that most teachers respond positively on the implementation of ICT in English instructional practice in elementary school. Regarding the cultural content, the participants agree that ICT can be helpful for them to provide interactive digital teaching material, including cultural material for the students. The existence of ICT is helpful for both students and teachers to provide real and authentic teaching materials. Therefore, the use of ICT needs to be promoted to provide cultural awareness in ELT practice to equip young learners to do intercultural communication in the global world

Abstract

The present study explores the magical realism contents in the Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie. It also aims to investigate the way the magical realism contents to be adapted and integrated into the cross-cultural understanding material to support the EFL students’ cross-cultural awareness. The qualitative research method is employed for analysing the primary source by consulting it to the secondary sources. From the story, it is found that the struggle is available between two opposing structures in a mystical realist document, and one of them is working toward the development of a fantasy universe from the other. These are the worlds of fantasy and life, and they are all present and vying for the reader's interest. Thus, the study may deduce that Rushdie employs magical realist features such as time dilation and the introduction of myth, legends, and folklore. Rushdie has built something unique with Midnight’s Children, and Saleem is honestly attempting to tell the tale of his existence, and the life of the new country. Moreover, based on the contents found, the instructional activities can be designed by adapting the magic realism content found in the story to build the cross-cultural awareness of the Indonesian EFL students. Moreover, magic realism content can also be an alternative and variation on the language and cultural classes.

Abstract

Addressing the post-pandemic challenges in EFL classroom, teacher should empower their knowledge by exploring the potential methods to be applied in the classroom (Bawawa et al., 2021). Combining cooperative learning and flipped classroom can be a way for answering the challenges in post pandemic period. Some researchers have positively suggested about the integration of cooperative learning method in flipped classroom (Erbil, 2020; Linling & Abdullah, 2023). However, the studies about the combination of these methods are still limited (Aslan, 2022; Foldnes, 2016). Therefore, this research attempts to examine cooperative learning implication in flipped classroom effects for EFL students’ reading achievement during post-pandemic period. This study employs the quasi-experimental research. The experimental group is taught using the integration of cooperative learning into flipped classroom model, whereas, control group is taught using conventional instruction. The findings reveal that the students who learn in experimental group have better reading performance than those who learn in control group. The finding also presents that the integration of cooperative learning and flipped classroom have statistically significant effects towards reading proficiency. Thus, this study proposes an adaptive instructional model to enhance students’ English language communication and skills.

Abstract

It is evidence that the literacy and reading proficiency for Indonesian students need to be enhanced. Therefore, the objective of this study is to enhance the reading proficiency and learning engagement of eleventh-grade students at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2023/2024 through the implementation of the Preview, Question, Read, Summarize (PQRS) strategy. The research involved twenty-two students and followed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting phases within each research cycle. Notably, the progress in students' learning engagement is evident in the mean scores, with the first cycle averaging 35.32 and the second cycle averaging 38.50, indicating an improvement of 3.18 points. Additionally, there was a noteworthy enhancement in students' reading proficiency, illustrated by the mean scores for their learning activities: 58.52 in the first cycle and 70.45 in the second cycle, reflecting an improvement of 11.93 points. These findings affirm that the PQRS Strategy effectively enhances both students' reading ability and their engagement in learning activities.
