Abstract

This research was a descriptive quatitative study that focuses on the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their ability in writing hortatory exposition text. The problem formulation of this research was “is there any correlation between students’ vocabulary and their writing ability of hortatory exposition text?”. Whereas the objective of this research were to know and to describe whether or not there is the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their ability in writing hortatory exposition text. The sample of this research was 28 students of fourth grade semester of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. This research was taken place in STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. After calculating by using Product Moment formula the writer got rxy was 0.54. rcount = 0.54 was taken place between 0.400 – 0.600. rtable for significance level 5% is 0.374 andit an be concluded that rcount = 0.54 is higher than rtable = 0.374. So Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected. It means that there is a fair correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their ability in writing hortatory exposition text at the fourth semester of English Department of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung in 2016/2017.

Abstract

English as foreign language brings a phenomenon in education system. EFL students who do not want to get left behind need to master English to follow the growing of education system. Speaking as one of the basic skills is important to be mastered. Therefore, there are many aspects should be cared for. One of them is students’ speaking anxiety. This research is aimed to find the basic causes of Indonesian EFL students’ speaking Anxiety. The data were gathered from a qualitative research. The sample of this study came from a group of Indonesian students who took Speaking 1 class at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. The research shown that there were four causes of foreign language students’ anxiety: discomfort, fear, shyness, and worry.

Abstract

This experimental research is conducted at SMP Kristen Kalam Kudus Surakarta, from December 2011 to June 2012. The sample of the research is two classes; one class is treated as experimental class taught by using visual auditory kinestetic and one classis treated as control class taught by using direct instruction. Each of them consisted of 28 students. The data are in the form of quantitative data that are taken from reading test. The data of reading test are used to know the students’ reading ability. The data of reading test are the scores of students’ reading test that was administered after having eight times treatments for each class. The researcher analyzes the data using t-test formula (SPSS for windows 17.0). Based on the result of data analysis, the research finding states that visual auditory kinesteticis more effective than direct instruction to teach reading for Junior High School students. Based on these research findings, it can be concluded that visual auditory kinesteticis an effective method to improve students’ reading ability. Ideally, visual auditory kinestetic has to be implemented in the class in order to achieve optimal result. By applying this method, the teachers have some roles. They are guiding, motivating,monitoring and help the students when they are doing some activities about reading. It can help the Junior High School students to become more independent, strategic and motivated readers.

Abstract

This study discusses the hidden reason of disastrous action conducted by Ed Boone, one of the main characters in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. This study aims to find Ed Boone’s hidden reasons for killing the dog. The sources in this study are taken from books and the internet. The novel, Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is used as the main source. This study uses psychological approach. The theories used are theory of character, characterization and theory of psychology. In theory of psychology, the writer uses Freud’s personality structure and defense mechanisms. The finding of this study is: Ed Boone’s hidden reason to kill the dog is because of jealousy, disappointment, anger that his needs to love and to be loved are denied. These feelings come from his unconscious conflicts that are due to his relation with Mrs. Boone, Mr. Shears and Mrs. Shears. These lead him to kill the dog. Thus his action is to release his anger.

Abstract

Communication is not just that one person is speaking and the other is listening. In doing its duty as a means of communication, the language in each country has different characteristics. The use of language here is to show the identity of each country. In education area, learning a language as second language sometimes creates a problem. The problem deals with the difficulties in learning second language and some error that is done by learners in learning second language. Hence, this study is aimed to find the differences and the similarity between Bahasa Indonesia and English through a short story titled “A Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin translated by Desi Ilham Sianturi. To deal with the purpose of this study the writer uses contrastive analysis method.

Abstract

Impromptu speech gives a different experience in doing public speaking for students. This speech involves students in speaking what they have written in short time. While doing impromptu speech, many students who do not have a good skill in speaking choose to give up while others stand to speechless on the stage. This study is aimed to explore what causes appear related to foreign language anxiety among the English Education Study Program students in speaking impromptu speech. The data were gathered from a qualitative research. The sample of this study was a group of Indonesian students who took Speaking 3 class at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. Impromptu speech was taught in this class. The results show that there were four causes of foreign language students’ anxiety: discomfort, fear, shyness, and worry. From the result of the study, some suggestions could be proposed to help the students deal with foreign language anxiety of Indonesian EFL students in speaking impromptu speech.
