Abstract

The choice of an effective pedagogical strategy is critical in evoking children's participation in the learning process and achieving the intended educational objectives. In the post-pandemic age, the educational landscape has undergone major change, with a trend toward online learning modes accessible via mobile devices. This is made possible through a variety of digital platforms, such as Zoom Meeting, Google Meet, and other similar applications meant to support instructional activities. The lack of direct teacher-child engagement during the learning process has the potential to reduce children's interest in learning, particularly in the setting of elementary school (ES) instruction. The current community service project entailed the development of a service team that designed a work program based on mentoring elementary school pupils in Gedong Pakuon, Bandarlampung. The team's pedagogical approach emphasised delightful and engaging learning experiences. The goal of this initiative is to increase children's interest in English language acquisition while also achieving educational goals on hitherto undiscovered topic matter. The research methodology used is experimental in nature, and the effectiveness of the fun learning approach in increasing children's interest in learning is noticed. The current study's findings show a significant increase in children's participation in knowledge acquisition during the period of program implementation. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the achievement of learning objectives was effective. Specifically, the ability of youngsters to pronounce vocabulary items and basic sentences relevant to learning materials is a goal.

Abstract

The problem identified in this study is that the majority of students expressed difficulty in using vocabulary appropriately, especially in distinguishing nuances of meaning between vocabulary that have the same meaning. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of the Language Day Program on students' vocabulary mastery in Islamic universities in Lampung by examining internal and external factors and knowing students' attitudes towards the program based on the ABC Model (Affective, Behavioral, Cognitive). The method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach. The data collection used was observation, interview, and documentation and used purposive sampling. The results show the positive impact of the program; internal factors such as increased learning motivation, active participation, self-confidence, and vocabulary mastery encourage students to express ideas more freely. External factors such as the teacher's role as a facilitator help students use vocabulary appropriately, contextually, and naturally. Effectively, students showed a positive emotional response to the program. Behaviorally, students actively used the new vocabulary, although the consistency varied. Cognitively, students felt the program improved their understanding of vocabulary and language context, although they still had difficulty in distinguishing similar vocabulary. The program needs to optimally apply the principles of CLT, namely exposure to the use of native speakers' mother tongue and the importance of games in learning, to maximize the improvement of vocabulary mastery. Further research is also needed to explore other factors besides vocabulary and develop more effective teaching strategies.

Abstract

. This research investigates the correlation between mastery of idiomatic expressions and reading comprehension among tenth-grade students at one of high schools in Way Pengubuan during the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year. Mastery of idiomatic expressions, which improves through childhood and adolescence into adulthood, is essential for accurate comprehension. Reading comprehension is the ability to extract specific information from texts. The study involved 138 students, with a sample of 64 selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected via tests comprising 20 items each for idiomatic expression and reading comprehension, ensuring the validity of the test items. Analysis was conducted using SPSS 25.0. The findings revealed a high correlation between students' idiomatic expression mastery and their reading comprehension, with a correlation coefficient of 0.986, indicating a strong relationship. This suggests that proficiency in understanding idiomatic expressions significantly enhances reading comprehension.

Abstract

This qualitative research focuses on the strategies applied by ambivert personality tutor to enhance young learners' English-speaking skills. The research is motivated by the complex challenges in teaching speaking, such as language anxiety, heterogeneity of abilities, and low confidence of learners in Indonesia. The participant, an ambivert tutor, was selected purposively to represent reflective yet adaptable teaching characteristics. This research used the narrative inquiry method to explore the experiences of an ambivert tutor in depth. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, narrative frames, and lesson plans document analysis, then thematically analyzed. The research findings reveal that the participant's philosophy, which focuses on building confidence and joy, is consistently implemented through various communicative strategies. Participant also responsively address the key challenges of ability heterogeneity and classroom energy management through differentiated instruction strategies and positive non-verbal classroom management.

Abstract

This study investigates how sustainability messages are represented in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbook for Indonesian elementary learners and the extent to which these messages reflect SDG/ESD priorities. Using qualitative content analysis of multimodal content with particular attention to visual illustrations, the study examines the Grade IV textbook My Next Words to identify recurring environmental themes and the sustainability practices promoted. The findings show that sustainability is primarily framed through everyday, learner-accessible routines, including reducing single-use plastic during shopping; maintaining cleanliness at home and school; choosing low-impact mobility (e.g., cycling); saving energy by turning off lights; and caring for plants through watering and tree planting, which collectively model ecological responsibility for young learners. However, the coverage remains uneven: more systemic sustainability dimensions, especially renewable energy literacy, structured waste management (sorting and recycling routines), and explicit, solution-oriented climate change learning, are limited, resulting in sustainability being communicated more as individual moral behavior than as interconnected environmental challenges requiring informed understanding and collective action. The study recommends strengthening future textbook editions by integrating more balanced sustainability dimensions through age-appropriate tasks, projects, and visuals linked to local contexts, alongside teacher support to help learners move from “doing” sustainability to understanding its broader environmental rationale, thereby enhancing environmental literacy and SDG/ESD-aligned learning in primary EFL education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance the English-speaking skills of students at Pondok Pesantren Tahfidzul Qur’an Al-Quds in Bandar Lampung through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. Implemented over three months in three action cycles: Look, Think, and Act, the program involved students and pesantren administrators in all phases of contextual, theme-based learning drawn from students’ daily activities such as prayer routines, dormitory interactions, and Islamic value discussions. Evaluation results revealed a 17.2-point average increase between pre-test and post-test scores, alongside affective improvements such as confidence and active participation. Interviews and reflection sessions indicated tangible benefits, including the emergence of peer mentors and an engaging learning atmosphere. These findings affirm that integrating participatory methods with religious and contextual content meaningfully supports students’ speaking skill development in pesantren settings.

Abstract

Despite the increasing prevalence of digital educational materials, code-switching as a viable teaching strategy has gained significant traction. This study aimed to identify structural codes of code-switching and their use in communication within the YouTube playlist "Learning English from Zero" by Ritueli Daeli, consisting of episodes 1 to 5. In this study, a qualitative approach employed inductive content analysis with a deductive coding scheme to examine 196 code-switches across a cumulative total of 84 minutes using the frameworks proposed by Poplack (1980) and Appel & Muysken (2006). The study determined that overall, inter-sentential code-switching dominated, with 106 instances (54.08%), while referential code-switching comprised the majority of instances within the discourse, with 104 instances (53.06%), followed by the use of metalinguistic code-switching with 55 instances (28.06%). This study determined that code-switching as an element in teaching can be highly beneficial, particularly for beginners navigating the ESL environment.

Abstract

This research explores the challenges faced by online journalism practices in managing communication ethics, particularly in the aspects of information accuracy and speed of news distribution. With the increasing influence of social media and digital platforms, online journalism faces growing pressure to publish news quickly, often at the expense of a thorough verification process. This research identifies that one of the main root causes of the problem is the lack of training and strict editorial standards, resulting in errors in reporting and declining public trust in the media. The study conducted in this research used the literature research method. The results found that the practice of communication ethics in online journalism is simply to maintain the integrity of the media and strengthen public trust in an ever-evolving information age.
