This study aims 1) to compare the speaking performance of university students who graduated from Islamic boarding school and public school-based senior high schools and 2) to investigate the potential factors affecting the difference of their speaking performance. First year students of a State Islamic University in Lampung - Indonesia participated as the subjects of research. The data of students’ speaking performance was obtained from the documentation of students’ speaking entrance test score. Then, a semi-closed-ended questionnaire investigating the curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs in their previous high schools covering the sorts, the frequency, and the duration of the activities was distributed to disclose the underlying reasons of the speaking performance differences. The results revealed that generally the Islamic boarding school-based senior high school graduates’ speaking performance is slightly better than the public-based one with a minor difference on the five aspects of speaking assessment. The former showed better achievement in fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, whereas the latter got better result in grammar and pronunciation. Dissimilar variations of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at both types of school and the frequency of the activities might be the potential factors affecting the differences.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum emphasizes the role of teachers in shaping students' character. This research was conducted using a qualitative method with a systematic literature review approach, analyzing scientific articles by Indriani et al. (2023), Khairiyah et al. (2023), and Putri et al. (2023), which discuss the role of teachers in character education in the Merdeka Curriculum era. Data validation was carried out through source triangulation to obtain a comprehensive understanding. The findings indicate that the application of Student-Centered Learning (SCL) in the Merdeka Curriculum helps students develop character traits such as independence, creativity, and mental resilience, which are essential for facing future challenges. Project-Based Learning (PBL) enhances critical thinking, creativity, discipline, teamwork, and responsibility. Differentiated learning provides space for students to learn according to their interests, talents, and styles, boosting motivation, engagement, and appreciation for diversity. Additionally, the role of teachers as facilitators is crucial in developing students' character, including independence, leadership, and empathy, which supports their academic, social, emotional, and moral development. Conclusion: Character education in the Merdeka Curriculum era shapes academically intelligent students with strong moral and social values to face future challenges.

Abstract

Child education in Islam encompasses various aspects, including worship and moral education. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping children's character, instilling noble morals, and introducing the values of worship from an early age. This study aims to examine children's rights to receive worship and moral education from an Islamic perspective and to analyse the role of parents in fulfilling these rights. Using a literature review method, this study explores parental obligations according to Islamic teachings, ranging from the education of tawhid and worship to the development of ethics and noble character. The findings indicate that worship and moral education provided by parents from an early age form a fundamental basis for creating devout and morally upright Muslim generations. The conclusion drawn is that the role of parents in educating their children in line with Islamic teachings significantly influences the child's future, both in this world and the hereafter.

Abstract

The planning of courses including designing curriculum and syllabus is often ignored in English language teaching and teacher training.  Harmer (2000) states that decisions about course content are very often not taken by teachers, but by some higher authority.  Even many institutions present the syllabus in terms of the main textbook to be used - by a certain date, teachers are expected to have covered a certain number of units in the book.  At the same time teachers are often provided with a list of supplementary material and activities available. Yet, the graduates of such programs as English teacher training are often required to carry out course design task without having received sufficient training to do so.  As a matter of fact, course design requires specialized expertise which can be gained through learning and practice.  Designing courses is unlike preparing one's own teaching as it should be understood by others who will use the design.  Therefore, it is very urgent to equip the English teachers with the basic competence of course design.
