Abstract

This research is based on the implementation of ER and EL in Xreading as the 1st semester students’ English learning approach. The population of this research is students of English Education, Universitas Bandar Lampung. This research aimed to know how the principles of extensive reading and extensive listening implemented in ER and EL process through Xreading website and what students' perceptions of the implementation of ER and EL in Xreading as the 1st semester students’ English learning approach. The instruments of this research were observation, interview and TOEL test. Then, the data were analyzed by coding compression. The result showed that most of the ER principles had been implemented well in the implementation of ER in Xreading. On the other side, the implementation of EL in Xreading, only several principles of EL have been implemented. Thus, the implementation of the ER process in Xreading was more dominated than the EL process. Even though EL also helped students to learn the pronunciation of words. But, the students did not implement principles of EL optimally. Consequently, ER in Xreading was suitable for the 1st semester students’ English learning approach, but EL in Xreading was not suitable for the 1st semester students’ English learning approach. During the ER and EL process in Xreading, students preferred reading to listening to the material.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of YouTube as a learning medium on vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 33 Bandar Lampung during the 2024/2025 academic year. While YouTube is primarily known as an entertainment platform, it can also serve as an effective tool for learning, particularly in enhancing vocabulary. Employing a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach, the research involved 35 students selected from a population of 173 across five classes. The study utilized descriptive text materials, with data collected through pretests and posttests administered before and after using YouTube videos as learning aids. Pretest and posttest scores were analyzed using paired sample t-tests via SPSS 16. The analysis revealed a significant result (Sig. = 0.000 < α = 0.05), confirming that YouTube had a significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. The findings imply that incorporating YouTube as a teaching tool can enhance language learning outcomes and provide an engaging platform for vocabulary development

Abstract

This study aims to analyze narrative texts written by 9th-grade students using transitivity analysis. The subjects were selected by several teachers who believed the class was suitable for the study based on their perspectives. Out of the 32 students involved, only 14 wrote narrative texts that met the established criteria. The remaining texts included 6 recount texts, 11 descriptive texts, and 1 procedural text. The transitivity analysis of the 14 narrative texts revealed that students utilized various processes, including material, mental, and relational processes, with a noticeable dominance of material processes. The results of this study revealed that although students could write narrative texts, there were still variations in the use of incomplete generic structures and less varied language features. This can be seen in the results of the transitivity process percentage, material processes showed a rate of 52%, mental processes (22%), verbal processes (8%), behavioral processes (5%), relational processes (12%), and existential processes (1%). These results do not indicate that students' writing follows the grammatical features that apply to narrative texts, where material and mental processes dominate. This study provides insight into students’ narrative writing skills and the use of transitivity in their writing. It provides a basis for developing more effective curriculum and instructional strategies in teaching narrative text in grade 9. The study also identified several limitations, including the limited sample size and manual analysis, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Recommendations for further research include the use of linguistic analysis software and expanding the research sample.

Abstract

Mastering speaking skills is essential for effective communication in English language learning. However, many students face challenges in developing these skills. Preliminary research at SMA N 1 Baradatu revealed that 60% of tenth-grade students scored below the minimum competency criterion (KKM) of 72. This study aimed to examine the impact of using the chain story game on the speaking ability of tenth-grade students at SMA N 1 Baradatu during the 2024/2025 academic year. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed. The population comprised tenth-grade students at SMA N 1 Baradatu, with a sample of 68 students: 34 from class X IPA 2 and 34 from class X IPS 1. Data collection involved providing treatment to the experimental group, while the control group received no intervention. Oral pre-tests and post-tests were conducted for both groups, and the data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 25. Since the data were neither normally distributed nor homogeneous, the Mann-Whitney U test was used. The analysis revealed a significance value (p-value) of 0.000, lower than α = 0.05, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). The results demonstrate that the chain story game significantly improved students' speaking abilities. This study highlights the potential of interactive and innovative techniques, such as the chain story game, to address challenges in speaking skill development and enhance student engagement in English language learning.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of English kids' songs on vocabulary mastery among fifth-grade students at SD Islam Assalam. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the study compares an experimental group, taught vocabulary through English kids' songs, with a control group that followed traditional textbook-based instruction. Both groups completed pre- and post-tests to measure vocabulary acquisition. Results indicated a significant improvement in the experimental group, with an average post-test score increase of 42.9%, compared to a 10.3% improvement in the control group. The experimental group showed gains across different vocabulary categories—nouns, verbs, and adjectives—suggesting that songs enhance vocabulary retention through repetition, rhythm, and emotional engagement. These findings support the use of songs as a viable instructional tool for vocabulary learning, particularly for young learners who benefit from multisensory and associative learning techniques. While promising, the study's limitations, such as a small sample size and short intervention period, suggest the need for further research to validate these findings across diverse educational settings. Future studies should consider expanding sample sizes, extending the duration, and comparing song-based learning with other multimedia approaches. This research offers valuable insights for educators and curriculum developers, underscoring the potential of integrating songs to make vocabulary learning both engaging and effective.

Abstract

In doing the process of translating, translator does several steps in delivering the meaning of the source text into target text. The goal of process of translating is to find equivalent term of source text in the target text. There is no exact linguistic system between two languages. Because of this difference, equivalence is quite hard to be achieved in the target language. As the consequence, sometimes, there is a shift in the target text. Abstract

Translation is a kind of process. It is not regarded as the product. The process of translation is decoding the source language text to find the meaning. After that, encoding the meaning in the target language text. The process of decoding and encoding meaning in the translation process is not a simple activity. there are many considerations that have to be taken into account. Meaning equivalence has to be maintained well. Because of that, decoding and encoding the meaning must be done properly. In finding the meaning of the source language text, it is not enough to pay attention merely on the referential meaning. the connotative meaning plays important role in gaining the right meaning. After getting the meaning of the source language text, maintaining meaning equivalence in target language can be difficult. There are problems that might rise the difficulty in finding the meaning equivalence. The problems are the difference of language system, the difference of culture, the various meanings embedded by a word, and the lack of generic-spesific word relationship.

Abstract

This study aims at identifying the culturally-bound expressions in the Englishtranslation version of Ahmad Tohari’s Ronggeng Dukuh Parukin terms of techniques totranslate the culturally-bound expressions and their meaning equivalence.This study uses a qualitative approach. The objects of this study are culturally-bound expressions in the form of words, phrases and clauses. The researcher becomes the primary instrument of this study. The secondary instrument is data sheets. In translating the culturally-bound expressions, the translator uses five techniques to solve the cultural gap between the source and target languages. Abstract

Transferring meaning embedded by English idiom is not an easy way to do. The meaning contained by English Idiom cannot be comprehended by merely knowing the meaning from each word arranging the idiom. Dealing with English idiom in translation is quite hard because the translator has to transfer the meaning of English idiom into Bahasa Indonesia rightly. On the other hand, it is quite difficult to find the equivalence term in Bahasa Indonesia reflecting the same meaning as it is reflected in the source text. To manage this problem, the translation strategies need to be applied. This research focuses on analyzing the translation strategies used by the translator in transferring the meaning of English idioms into Bahasa Indonesia in the subtitle of  Pitch Perfect 3 Movie. The research method is descriptive qualitative method.. Baker’s translation strategies is used as guideline in classifying the translation strategies used. After finding the type of translation strategies employed, further identifying whether the meaning of English idiom is transferred rightly in Bahasa Indonesia. According to the finding, translation by using idiom in similar meaning and disimilar form was not used by the translator to translate the idioms. The frequency of  translation by using idiom in similar meaning but disimilar form strategy is 4 idioms. 46 idioms were translated by using paraphrased strategy. It is only 1 idiom was translated by using omission strategy. that the meaning of 36 idioms are transferred accurately. The meaning of four idioms were transferred Less-accurately. The meaning of 11 idioms were classified as inaccurate translation

Abstract

Today, humans must think critically to face all challenges. In order to improve Indonesia's PISA survey results, the government developed the 2013 curriculum, which emphasizes critical and creative thinking. The aims of this research were to determine the proportion of HOTS and HOTS characteristics reflected in high school English test questions. The objects of the research were the English midterm and final exams for the 10th and 11th grades in the second semester of the 2021–2022 academic year used at MAN 1 Lampung Tengah. This study used a qualitative content analysis design. The study found that in the mid-term 10 grade, there were 6 items, or 20%, labeled "very low," whereas in the mid-term 11 grade, 14 items, or 46.67%, were labeled "enough." For the final Exam 10 class, 5 items were found at 12.50%, referred to as "very low," and 13 items were found at 32.50%, referred to as "low." The outcomes of HOTS-based questions were 86.84%, with questions about critical thinking abilities being the most prominent. This was followed by HOTS questions that help students develop creative thinking abilities (10.52%) and questions that aid in the development of problem-solving skills (2.63%).
