Abstract

In English as Foreign Language (EFL) classroom context, it is compulsory for the students to make reflections of literary works. The current study is aimed at examining how the students implement Gibbs’ reflective cycle in making reflections of literary analysis. The qualitative study employed a document analysis upon the students’ reflection artefacts. The students’ reflections are their responses to a short story written by Amy Tan. The findings of the study revealed that Gibbs’ reflective cycle is a good framework to be used by the students in writing reflections upon literary works they are working on. The well-structured framework of writing reflection helped the students explore the literary work deeply, since the reflective cycle accommodates important aspects that can be explored from the literary work by the students. It can be concluded from this study that among the models of reflective writing developed by Kolb, Johnson, and Gibbs, the latest model is considered the most suitable to be used in literary classroom since its well-structured model enables the students to write better reflections of literary works.Keywords: reflective writing; Gibbs’ reflective cycle framework; literary works; literary analysis.

Abstract

Learning English for Japanese is not as easy as people think. Teachers should provide a way to immerse Japanese students. Therefore, this study aimed to understand how Japanese English teachers immersed students in learning English, what challenges that students and teachers were facing and their perceptions toward the International Work Camp. This case study collected the data from 20 students and 10 teachers from various countries using interviews and an observation checklist. The data were analyzed in several steps, starting from data collection, data reduction, data display to data conclusion. The findings of this study show that Japanese and non-Japanese teachers collaborated to immerse students in attractive teaching ways, such as drilling techniques, gaming, singing, using cards, playing outside, grouping, etc. Besides, teachers also kept motivating and reinforcing them to speak English. Furthermore, students’ barriers in speaking were pronunciation, anxiety, grammar, vocabulary, and less practice. Problems were not only faced by students as teachers also had hindrances. Therefore, through the International Work Camp, students could learn to speak English effectively. They could interact with other students and get English speaking competence immersion with several native English teachers. The students also had good perceptions of this work camp.

Abstract

The present study was an effort to investigate strategies mostly used in learning speaking, which covered direct strategies and indirect strategies. To this end, 60 students from two different high schools in a city in Indonesia, in which 30 students for each school participated this study. In collecting the data, this study used close-ended questionnaires with Strategy Inventory Language Learner (SILL) consisting of 39 items, which were analyzed by using a scoring system. The results of the study showed that students of both schools generally used the same and different learning strategies. The same learning strategies used by the students of both schools were organizing and evaluating learning, referring to metacognitive or indirect strategies. Meanwhile, the different learning strategies used by the students of both schools occurred on five strategies at a medium level. From the six types of learning strategies, as indicated in this study, the most popular learning strategies which were used by students of both schools were organizing and evaluating learning.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the linguistic features contained in K 13 English textbook revised edition of grades X, XI, and XII published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in terms of sentence pattern, types of tenses, voice, and aspect. This research is descriptive quantitative research. The sample of this research is thirty-nine reading passages were extracted from K13 English textbook revised edition published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture for senior high school students in Indonesia. All reading passages are taken as a sample, including fourteen texts of grade X, nine texts of grade XI, and sixteen texts of grade XII. The data were gathered by using a checklist and were analyzed by content analysis method. The findings showed that 1) The most common sentence patterns found are simple sentences. 2) Simple past tense is the majority of tenses used in reading the passages, especially at grade X and XI textbooks, while simple present tense is the dominant tenses found at grade XII. 3) The use of active voice dominates all reading passages at all grade levels. 4) The intensity of using the perfective aspect is higher than the imperfective aspect. 5) This result also implies that there are some differences in the findings of linguistic features from the three levels of this book. First, in terms of sentence patterns used in textbooks, at grade X the order of sentence patterns begins from the simple to the complicated one; simple sentences, then compound sentences, next complex sentences, and finally compound-complex sentences. Meanwhile, at grades XI and XII, the most complicated sentence patterns, namely compound-complex sentences, are less than compound sentences. Second, in terms of the types of tenses, the difference is that at grade X and XI textbooks, it is found that the dominant tenses used are simple past tense, while at grade XII textbooks, the most common tenses are simple present tense. these results indicate that the four linguistic features contained in English textbooks for high school In conclusion students in Indonesia need to be taught to students so that students can more easily understand and capture the meanings contained in the textbooks.

Abstract

This research deals with the effect of using skimming method in teaching reading comprehension  smk negeri 2 pematangsiantar on narrative text. The problem of this research are “what is the students’ ability in reading  without using skimming method at Grade XI students’ of SMK N.2 Pematangsiantar. What is the students’ ability in reading by using skimming method at Grade XI students’ of SMK N.2”. The purpose of this research are to find out the students’ ability in reading without using skimming method at grade XI students in SMK N 2 Pematangsiantar on reading narrative  text, to find out the the students ability in reading by using skimming method to the skill of grade XI students in SMK N 2 Pematangsiantar on reading narrative text. To answer the problem the researchers uses theories: Micklukey and Jefferies (2007), Grellet (2000), Milter (2001), Jhon and Dara (2005), David Nunan (1991), Douglas Newton (2000), Douglas Brown (2003), Rae Pica (2000), Roger Brown (1973), Ronald Carter (1998), Scoot Thornburry (2002), Wilga Rivers (1987), Diane Larsen (1990), Judi Willis (2008), Jack and Theodore (1986). The research design is a quantitative research. As an experimental research, it aims to know the effect of the technique that given and apply whether it influences to the object or no. In this research in collecting the data the researcher has to do three steps, they are pre-test, treatment, post-test. The researchers find out that the effect of using skimming method can increase the students’ skill in reading of narrative text. It can be proven from the test of students’ score in posttest of experimental class which the treatment the researchers did the treatment by using skimming method. By using skimming method, the students can increase their ability in reading of narrative text.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh para guru di Kabupaten Bengkulu Tengah yang dianggap masih banyak yang kurang tersentuh dengan teknologi dan metode pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang diterapkan masih dianggap monoton. Oleh karena itu perlu diberikan bekal pengetahuan tentang guru yang kreatif dan milenial melalui pelatihan. Adapun tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah untuk melatih dan mewujudkan habituasi pada guru Bahasa Inggris di Kabupaten Bengkulu Tengah agar menjadi guru yang kreatif dan milenial sebagai implementasi dari revolusi industri 4.0. Kreatif tidak hanya pandai menggunakan media, namun juga menerapkan metode atau teknik mengajar bahasa Inggris yang sesuai. Dalam melaksanakan kegiatan ini, metode pengabdian dilakukan dalam bentuk pengajaran dan pelatihan serta evaluasi. Kegiatan pengadian ini terkait dengan Dinas pendidikan di Provinsi Bengkulu dan instansi pendidikan di Kabuapen Bengkulu Tengah khususnya Sekolah Menengah Pertama di Bengkulu Tengah. Dinas pendidikan dan instansi terkait merupakan lembaga yang memiliki visi yang sama dengan tim pelaksana kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini yakni mencerdaskan kehidupan Bangsa Indonesia. Kegiatan evaluasi pada pengabdian masyarakat ini terkait semua hal yang terjadi dalam proses pelaksanan kegiatan. Hal ini dimulai dari tahap awal berupa persiapan yang meliputi pengamatan lapangan (pada Sekolah Menengah Pertama di Kabupaten Bengkulu Tengah).

Abstract

Sebagai media pendukung siswa dalam belajar, bahan ajar memegang peranan yang sangat penting. Bahan ajar merupakan sumber belajar yang digunakan guru untuk mencapai tujuan pembelajaran. Oleh karenanya, bahan ajar hendaklah memiliki kualitas yang baik. Baik tidaknya kualiatas bahan ajar sangat menentukan mutu pembelajaran. Bahan ajar berkualitas tentunya dibuat dan dikembangkan sesuai kebutuhan guru dan siswa. Artikel ini menyajikan pelatihan pengembangan bahan ajar keterampilan membaca (reading skills) yang dilakukan kepada guru bahasa Inggris  di selingkupan Madrasah Aliya (MA) Kota Bengkulu. Menimbang siswa MA memiliki kebutuhan yang tidak dapat disamakan dengan siswa sekolah menengah umum lainnya, pelatihan ini menitik beratkan pada pengembangan bahan ajar keterampilan membaca Bahasa Inggris yang berbasis kebutuhan siswa MA, yakni bahan ajar yang melibatkan konten kultur dan/ atau nilai nilai yang ada pada keseharian siswa di lingkungan madrasah.  Salah satunya yakni nilai nilai keislaman. Terdapat tiga aspek nilai nilai keislaman yang difokuskan dalam pengembangan bahan ajar ini, diantaranya nilai akidah, nilai ibadah dan nilai akhlak. Ketiga nilai nilai inilah yang dicoba untuk diintegrasikan ke dalam teks reading pada produk pengembangan bahan ajar berbasis keislaman.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan adalah kegiatan penyuluhan pendidikan politik bagi pemilih pemula dalam rangka meningkatkan pemahaman siswa sekolah (pemilih pemula), dalam hal ini diwakili oleh Siswa-siswi Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 1 Kota Bengkulu. Metode yang digunakan dalam melaksanakan pengabdian pada masyarakat adalah (1) dialog antara Tim Pengabdian Dosen dengan siswa sekolah, (2) pemberian pengarahan dalam menyusun strategi untuk menghadapi black campaigne, (3) lomba desain stiker anti black campaigne pada pemilih pemula, (4) pembagian stiker anti black campaigne pada pemilih pemula. Pendidikan politik terhadap siswa sekolah sebagai pemilih pemula menimbulkan dampak positif, antara lain: mengurangi jumlah penyimpangan dalam proses pemilihan umum yang akan datang; sebagai penambah wawasan bagi siswa sekolah atau pemilih pemula mengenai pentingnya pemilihan umum tanpa ada black campaigne; sebagai motivasi siswa sekolah atau pemilih pemula untuk menyampaikan aspirasi berdasar hati nurani.

Abstract

Pengabdian pada masyarakat ini terlaksana berdasarkan hasil pengamatan terhadap para guru Bahasa Inggris di Kota Bengkulu yang dianggap masih menggunakan cara manual dalam menulis sitasi dan referensi. Sehingga perlu adanya pelatihan penggunaan aplikasi Mendeley sebagai salah satu perangkat pengelola referensi yang membantu guru bekerja dengan lebih efektif dan efisien dalam menulis karya ilmiah. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah agar guru memiliki pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam menggunakan aplikasi Mendeley untuk mengelola sitasi dan referensi. Dalam pelaksanaannya, kegiatan ini dilakukan dalam tiga tahapan yang sistematis yaitu: ceramah materi pelatihan, praktik penggunaan aplikasi dan evaluasi. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini melibatkan beberapa instansi pendidikan pada jenjang Sekolah Menengah Atas/Kejuruan di Kota Bengkulu. Visi yang sama menjadikan adanya keterkaitan langsung antara instansi tempat pelaksanaan kegiatan dan tim pelaksana kegiatan. Metode survey digunakan untuk mengevaluasi hasil kegiatan dengan cara mendistribusikan kuesioner kepada seluruh peserta pelatihan sebelum dan setelah mengikuti kegiatan. Hasil survey menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatkan yang signifikan pada pemahaman peserta pelatihan tentang penggunaan aplikasi Mendeley dalam pengelolaan sitasi dan referensi karya ilmiah. Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa kegiatan ini memberikan manfaat dan dampak positif bagi peserta.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused schools and universities to close so that online learning is one of the solutions to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus. This study aims to describe students' perceptions of learning English online during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research used descriptive quantitative method. The subjects analyzed consisted of two different department groups at University of Prof. Dr. Hazairin, S.H in the 2019/2020 academic year. The number of respondents was 66 participants. The data collection technique in this study used a questionnaire distributed in the form of a Google form regarding student perceptions of the application of online English learning. The results of this study indicate that most students are interested in online learning. Online learning is considered to be more fun and flexible. In terms of the platform that is the medium for implementing online learning itself, the WhatsApp application is considered the best or dominant application and is very helpful for online learning during the pandemic. Therefore, this data proves that the research respondents had positive perceptions of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.
