Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Religious radio stations serve as one of the media platforms for preaching and disseminating religious teachings. However, there is a noticeable tendency within these institutions to overlook workers’ welfare under the pretext of prioritizing religious missions. This study aims to analyze the labor management practices of religious radio stations in West Java. Employing a qualitative approach, the research is grounded in theoretical perspectives proposed by Weber (2002) and Marx (1978). The study involved eighteen religious radio stations across West Java as research subjects. The findings indicate that most of these religious radio stations rely heavily on freelance work and volunteer work. Moreover, the fulfillment of workers’ rights tends to be neglected, often falling short of labor regulations, and is legitimized through narratives of religious devotion, virtuous deeds, and spiritual rewards.

Abstract

The financial sustainability of the media in Indonesia relies heavily on advertising as its primary source of revenue. This dependence puts editorial independence in a difficult position, as the advertiser is the very same entity that is the subject of the news coverage. This study examines how Bocor Alus Politik resists advertiser interference as a means of defending its editorial independence. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data was collected through in-depth interviews with the managing editor, producers, journalists, and the business team, and supplemented by document analysis. The analysis is grounded in the five principles of public service (independence) by Kovach & Rosenstiel (2001) and the concept of the dual product market by Robert G. Picard (1989). The findings indicate that Bocor Alus Politik’s defense of its independence operates on multiple levels: a structural separation between the editorial and business teams that is internalized as a collective value across divisions; strict selection of potential collaboration partners; editorial control over content substance without exception; and public transparency through explicit disclaimers on collaborative content.

Abstract

Radio PRFM 107.5 News Channel Bandung has established its reputation as a citizen journalismbased local news radio through the slogan "Andalah Reporter Kami" (You Are Our Reporter). However, economic imperatives have steadily blurred the boundary between journalistic function and business logic, raising concerns about editorial independence in local broadcast media. This study aims to analyze content commodification practices at PRFM across both production and multiplatform distribution stages. Employing Vincent Mosco's (2009) political economy of communication theory, a qualitative approach with Robert E. Stake's intrinsic case study design was adopted. Data were collected through nonparticipant observation, indepth interviews, and literature study, subsequently validated through source triangulation. Findings reveal that content commodification operates systematically across two stages. During production, commodification manifests through marketdriven issue selection, sensational headline construction, and the strategic management of talkshow programs as advertiser recruitment instruments. During distribution, multiplatform content repurposing practices encompassing rhetoric of recombination, augmentation, and reversioning enable a single piece of information to be capitalized across multiple platforms simultaneously. Furthermore, PRFM's financial dependence on government advertisers, accounting for 85% of total advertising revenue, demonstrably erodes editorial independence and shifts the station's function from press watchdog to a media outlet vulnerable to external intervention. These findings imply that economic pressures in local media ecosystems require stronger institutional safeguards to protect journalistic integrity.

Abstract

Background: The development of the internet has now shifted the function of radio as a mass media. However, radio still has loyal listeners, especially for content with more specific segmentation. This condition has encouraged radio stations to create new strategies by changing their names and broadcast formats to better suit their target audiences. One example is religious-themed broadcasts or religious radio. In a case study in West Java, the West Java Regional Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPID) found that, as of January 2025, there were 33 religious radio stations in the region. Purpose: This study aims to reveal the dynamics of religious radio in West Java from a political economy perspective. Methods: The researchers used qualitative methods to gather information through open discussions and direct interviews. Results: The findings show that there is a process of commodification in the form of commercialization of broadcasts and audiences, followed by a process of structuration marked by the restriction of women’s voices in radio broadcasts, exclusivity of content, and violations of formal regulations (the obligation to play the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya), to a process of spatialization as evidenced by the diversification of religious-themed products for media expansion. Conclusion: The above case study shows that religious radio exists not only as a community medium but also as a form of business, political, and social competition among capitalists. Implications: The results of this study provide a new comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of religious radio, from its presence as an information medium to its role as a vehicle for capitalist business.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of news visualization through infographics in online media has become increasingly important in simplifying the complexity of political data related to general elections. This study aims to analyze the representation of messages, interactions, and visual composition in the infographic series of the 2024 Election published by Kompas.id. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method within a constructivist paradigm using the Social Semiotics approach developed by Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuwen. The data consist of five infographics from the 2024 Election series published on Kompas.id and were collected through documentation studies and visual observation. The results and discussion show that Kompas.id applies mixed visual strategies in presenting election information. In the conceptual metafunction, the identity of political officials is constructed in a formal and authoritative manner through an inclusive analytical structure and the equal positioning of political actors with audiences through covert taxonomy. In the narrative metafunction, fluctuations in line graphs are interpreted as storylines that illustrate electoral dynamics, while human contexts are represented through participants’ real actions. In the dimensions of interaction and composition, Kompas.id predominantly employs the offer viewpoint and open framing to create an objective impression of election data. This study contributes to the field of visual communication and digital journalism by demonstrating that infographic-based election reporting can transform abstract political data into informative and educational constructions of political reality.
