Abstract

Self-regulated Learning (SRL) is a learning method that puts a strong emphasis on the importance of self-learning skills. Unfortunately, many existing educational technologies employed by colleges and universities continue to place a premium on technical support for the learning process within the classroom that does not provide the same level of support for SRL. This study aims to close this gap by developing the ON-SR UII, a new SRL platform that can assist college students in their quest to become independent learners. Using the design thinking approach, ON-SR UII is developed as a responsive web app that can be accessed by college students through the Internet anywhere at any time at their own pace using any computing device of varying screen sizes. This article describes the process by which ON-SR UII was designed prior to its first prototype being developed, deployed, and evaluated by stakeholders for functionality, usability, and responsiveness. The encouraging results indicate that ON-SR UII has the potential to be widely implemented, allowing for the measurement of its implications in future research.

Abstract

Character education is getting the most attention from formal schools in Indonesia after the government announced that it is important to build the younger generation’s character. The character development is very important because many crimes are committed by high school students such as fighting, drug abuse, and motor-gang fights. This study aims to describe the implementation of character education in Madrasah Aliyah Sunan Pandanaran, which is a boarding school under Pondok Pesantren Pandanaran, and design character-education patterns suitable for MASPA. Descriptive qualitative research design was implemented by interviewing teachers and management staff at MASPA and observing the implementation of character education in MASPA. The results showed that 1) MASPA has been implementing character education in the 9 main character values namely religious character, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hard work, self-reliance, self-confidence, responsibility, and patriotism. 2) the implementation of character education is integrated with the regulations at Pondok Pesantren Sunan Pandanaran. Each character is developed with different activities. Some of the activities that are required leads in sanctions if it is not carried out by learners or students. 3) The suitable character education model for students of Madrasah Aliyah Sunan Pandanaran is by example. Nonetheless, implementation guide should be recorded so that it can still be implemented under different management. A design of good character education is also presented for MASPA.

Abstract

Menulis ilmiah (laporan penelitian Tindakan kelas) bagi guru-guru, termasuk guru Bahasa Inggris, merupakan kegiatan yang sangat menantang. Kesulitan ini bukan saja dikarenakan keterbatasan waktu untuk menulis laporan PTK yang dimaksud akan tetapi juga keterbatasan waktu untuk melaksanakan PTK di kelas mereka. Disamping itu, keterampilan menulis ilmiah para guru Bahasa Inggris juga perlu penganiayaan karena lama tidak dipergunakan dalam pembelajaran. Tantangan ini mengundang Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UII untuk melaksanakan pendampingan penulisan artikel ilmiah (laporan PTK) bagi guru-guru Bahasa Inggris di Bantul. Program pengabdian masyarakat ini dilaksanakan dengan pemberian materi tentang manajemen waktu, pengantar PTK, dan strategi menulis bagian-bagian laporan PTK. Selain itu, para guru juga didampingi oleh seorang dosen dari PBI UII yang akan membantu secara teknis dalam menyelesaikan laporan PTK. Sharing inovasi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan referensi-referensi artikel ilmiah merupakan dukungan yang diharapkan oleh para guru. Hasil dari program pengabdian masyarakat kami ini adalah terdapat 5 laporan penelitian Tindakan kelas (PTK) dengan berbagai macam topik penelitian. Survey menunjukkan bahwa para dosen menyambut baik program pendampingan ini dan merasa program ini sangat membantu. Pendampingan yang lebih intensif dengan pertemuan luring akan lebih membantu penyelesaian laporan PTK tersebut.

Abstract

Teachers play a critical role in addressing the learning loss due to the Covid-19 school disruption by creating various strategies to overcome the loss. This paper aims to investigate several factors which impact to student’s performance and teachers’ efforts in overcoming the learning loss during Covid-19 pandemic. In a qualitative method with an open-ended survey and interview, 35 high school English teachers with at least 3 years of experience shared their experiences to overcome the learning loss. 10 teachers are clarifying their strategies to cope with learning loss due to Covid-19 school disruption by inadeptly interviewed. The thematic analysis of the data found that the teachers' strategies to overcome learning loss, teacher-student interaction, curriculum adaptation, and support from the government and school [1]. Most of the English teachers perceived that learning loss happened due to the lack of teacher-student interaction, inadequate facilities, and inauthentic writing skills during the Covid-19 pandemic. To overcome this, teachers adapted English modules with media technology to simplify English lessons and build learning independence despite the incomprehensive lessons. The support from the government and school-ICT training, technology teaching tools, internet, and E-learning sources - helps teachers reduce the learning loss possibility. The findings indicated the importance of supportive and adaptive English teachers in mitigating learning loss due to Covid-19 school disruption.
