Abstract

Uniformity of cocoon weight is one important factor of parent stock in order to get a good quality of crosses. In consequence, some cocoons that too heavy or light become wastes even come from a good strain. The research that conducted at Forest and Nature Conservation Research and Development Center, Bogor, had an objective to know the effect of parent cocoon weight on the egg and larval quality among four reciprocal crosses. Strain 803 (Japanece race) and strain 804 (Chinese race) with different cocoon weight were used as parent stocks. The effect of cocoon weight was evaluated on the economical traits including number of eggs, weight of eggs, hatchability, weight of newly hatched larvae and hatching period through crossing method, wherein parents, F1s and reciprocals were involved. The result showed that number and weight of eggs were significantly different. Maximum number of eggs and maximum weight of eggs were 650 and 0.61 mg, respectively, that belongs to (803B x 804B), heavy cocoon of 803 female crossed with heavy cocoon of 804 male. Strain 803 female influenced those characters. Types of crossing had not an effect on hatchability, weight of newly hatched larvae and hatching period.

Abstract

The abundance of green mussel shells, clam shells, and snail shells that have not been maximally utilized has caused environmental disturbances. These shells can be used as a substitute for worm food because of their good nutritional content. This research aimed to analyze the productivity of Pheretima sp. with the combination of shell powder (green mussel, clam, and snail) and cow dung to their living media (feed) and the quality of vermicompost. The data were analyzed using SAS Studio application with completely randomized design (CRD), 10 treatment levels, with 3 replications each. The observed variables included earthworm productivity, vermicompost quality, and vermicompost performance. The results of the studyshow a significant (P<0.05) on the use of green mussel shell 10% in all earthworm productivity variables, and show a significant (P<0.05) on the use of green mussel shell 30% in vermicompost quality and vermicompost performance. The combination of 10% green mussel shell powder in cow dung media can increase the productivity of Pheretima sp. The best vermicompost testing result on water spinach plants was found in the treatment with the addition of 30% green mussel shell powder in cow dung media.

Abstract

Crickets are a promising alternative source of animal protein due to their high levels of amino acids, fatty acids, and protein (61.58%). These nutrients have applications in the pharmaceutical industry, human food, bird feed, and as a substitute for livestock feed, particularly in the form of cricket flour. The Kalung cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus) is notable for its rapid growth rate and efficient feed conversion. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of diets combining concentrate with cassava leaves of different maturities on the performance of Kalung crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus). A completely randomized design (CRD) was employed, consisting of three treatments with five replications each. The treatments were R1= concentrate+young cassava leaves, R2= concentrate+mature cassava leaves, R3= concentrate+cassava leaf stems, with a combination ratio of 1:1.5. The parameters observed include feed consumption, body weight gain, egg production, feed conversion, mortality, and income over feed cost (IOFC). The results showed that no significant differences among treatments in feed intake, weight gain, and mortality. However, significant differences were observed in egg production (0.022±0.011 g/individu/day) and feed conversion (1,88±0.95) with the R1 treatment showing the most favorable results. A diet combining concentrate with young cassava leaves significantly improves the reproductive performance and feed efficiency of Kalung crickets. This combination is recommended for enhancing productivity in Gryllus bimaculatus farming systems.

Abstract

Silkworm is a cold-blooded animal (poikiloterm) so that environment conditions greatly affect their growth. In China, silkworms rearing in the highlands with cool conditions. However, Indonesia is a tropical country with diverse topography conditions and some of them are low altitude areas below 250 m above sea level (asl). This study examined the productivity of silkworms in altitude of 250 m asl. The material used silkworm seedlings from the Silkworm Breeding Center (PPUS) Soppeng and Candiroto, and using 2 different types of mulberry leaf feed (Morus multicaulis and Morus cathayana). Both PPUS have different climatic and altitude conditions. Soppeng at an altitude less than 300 meters asl and Candiroto at a higher one. The results showed that silkworm from Soppeng with fed M. multicaulis was significant different (P<0.05) than other treatments in almost all parameters (consumption, weight of larva, quantity and quality of cocoon shell). The result indicated silkworm Soppeng breed with M. multicaulis have good performance either cocoon shell productions and qualities in Tropic (especially rearing at altitudes around 250 m asl).

Abstract

Honey is a livestock product that has high nutritional content and beneficial for the health of human body, but Improper post-harvest handling can cause short shelf life. The aim of this study was to analyze the physicochemical quality of kapok honey and rambutan honey after moisture reduction treatment using a dehumidifier. The kapok and rambutan honey samples had three different duration of moisture reduction treatments, included 0 hours, 4 hours, and 8 hours at room temperature ±30 °C. Each treatment level was repeated four times. This study used descriptive analysis. The physicochemical analysis during the treatment consists of water content, pH, ash content, viscosity, color, and sugar content. The results showed that the treatment of honey for 8 hours at a temperature of ±30 °C had a water content that was close to the SNI standard. Moreover, the nutritional content of honey in the 8-hour treatment of moisture reduction had the best results in the physicochemical quality both of kapok honey and rambutan honey even though the treatment did not affect the ash content of rambutan honey and the pH value of the two types of honey. The moisture reduction did not reduce the physicochemical quality in 2 types of honey.
