Abstract

Infectious diseases in infants correlated with non-exclusive breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding rates in Indonesia are still low. Breastfeeding behavior such as the implementation of early initiation of breastfeeding is thought to be related to exclusive breastfeeding. This study aimed to analyze the factors that associated with exclusive breastfeeding in infants aged 6-12 months old. The study design was cross-sectional using total sampling technique. Total samples was 41 mothers with children aged 6-12 months old in the Banjaran Village, Kediri City. Data were analyzed using the ChiSquare test. The results showed the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding, the implementation of early initiation of breastfeeding, the feeding of prelacteal food, the feeding of early complementary food, namely 24.4%, 41.1%, 48%, and 36.5%. The implementation of early initiation of breastfeeding and prelacteal feeding was significantly related to exclusive breastfeeding. The support of health workers for the provision of education and mentoring for early initiation of breastfeeding needs to be increased as an effort to succeed in breastfeeding success.

Abstract

Posyandu cadres are the spearhead of real Community Health Center services in helping to address nutritional problems in the community. To support their role, Posyandu cadres must possess adequate communication skills to convey nutrition and health messages in a simple manner. Cadres are required to listen actively, non-judgmentally, respond empathetically, understand emotions, and create a comfortable atmosphere for those receiving nutritional assistance, ensuring optimal intervention. Empathetic communication training is an effort to improve the cadres' abilities to support families of stunted toddlers. This study uses a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest experimental design method, which aims to determine the effect of empathic communication training in improving the knowledge and skills of Posyandu cadres in assisting families with malnutrition. This study involved 20 participants from the village cadres distance Plosoklaten Kediri. Conducting given is empathic communication training that contains material about the process of empathic communication and empathic communication practice roleplay. Understanding of the training material was measured using questionnaires made by researchers who describe the role of cadres, concepts, and processes of empathic communication, as well as scenarios containing cases for practicing empathic communication. Hypothesis testing using a paired samples t-test with p value = 0.001 (p<0.05). There is a significant difference in the level of knowledge between before and after being given empathic communication training for Posyandu cadres.

Abstract

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disorder during pregnancy that is associated with insulin resistance and increased oxidative stress. Functional nutrition through synbiotic beverages offers a promising non-pharmacological strategy to support glucose regulation and metabolic balance. Methods: A literature study was conducted by reviewing scientific articles obtained from Scopus, PubMed, SINTA, and Google Scholar databases. The analysis focused on bioactive anthocyanin compounds, probiotic-prebiotic synergies, as well as their effects on glucose metabolism and gut health. Results: Purple sweet potatoes and telang flowers contain anthocyanins with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antihyperglycemic properties. Synbiotic formulations that combine these ingredients with probiotics such as Lactobacillus plantarum improve the composition of the gut microbiota and the production of short-chain fatty acids, thereby improving insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. Conclusion: A synbiotic drink made from purple sweet potato and telang flower shows strong potential as a functional nutritional intervention for DMG. Further clinical research is needed to ensure its safety and effectiveness in pregnant women.

Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a critical period characterized by increased vulnerability to nutritional problems influenced by psychosocial and cognitive factors. This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the relationship between body image and balanced nutrition knowledge with the nutritional status of adolescent girls at SMPN 4 Kediri. Methods: A total of 127 female students were selected using simple random sampling. Body image was assessed using the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire–Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS), balanced nutrition knowledge was measured using a structured questionnaire based on national guidelines, and nutritional status was determined using body mass index-for-age. Results: The results showed that most respondents were aged 14 years (73.2%), had normal body image (49.6%), good nutrition knowledge (89.9%), and normal nutritional status (72.4%). Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between body image and nutritional status (p = 0.008) as well as between balanced nutrition knowledge and nutritional status (p < 0.001); however, multivariate analysis demonstrated no significant simultaneous association. Conclusion: These findings suggest that body image and nutrition knowledge are important individual factors related to adolescent nutritional status, highlighting the need for comprehensive and school-based nutrition education interventions.

Abstract

Background: Nugget products enhanced with locust flour are being explored as a novel source of functional food due to their high protein content, which plays a vital role in maintaining human health. Locusts, commonly consumed in parts of Africa and Asia, offer a promising alternative protein source. This study investigated the consumer acceptability of nuggets formulated with grasshopper flour as a nutrient-dense, functional food option. Methods: A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed, and data were analyzed using the Friedman Test to assess differences among treatments. If significant differences (p < 0.05) were found, further analysis was performed with the Wilcoxon Test through SPSS version 20. Organoleptic evaluation was carried out by 30 semi-trained panelists. The nugget formulations tested were: P1 (100% tapioca flour, 0% grasshopper flour), P2 (95% tapioca flour, 5% grasshopper flour), and P3 (85% tapioca flour, 15% grasshopper flour). Results: Findings indicated that P1 (without grasshopper flour) received the highest scores in terms of color and aroma. For texture, both P1 and P2 (5% grasshopper flour) were equally preferred. In terms of taste, P1 remained the most favored. Conclusion: Overall, nuggets without any addition of grasshopper flour (P1) achieved the highest level of acceptability across all sensory attributes.
