Abstract

Speaking skill is the skill that give us the ability to communicate effectively. The objective of the study were: (1) to find out the difficulties in reporting procedure text, (2) to find out the reason why do the students feel difficulties in reporting the procedure text, (3) to analysis why the difficulties occur at the studentsspeaking in reporting a procedure text.The population was all of the students first grade X-IPA of SMA Methodist 7 Medan 2019/2020 academic year. The sample of this research was the first grade X IPA consist 29 students in the class. The purpose of this study was to determine student knowledge in the text of the reporting procedure to determine student difficulties in the text of the reporting procedure. This researchers used qualitative method to know and examine the difficulties that occur and strive to resolve existing problems in speaking. From the results of research that has been conducted research, researchers found several that are classified through analysis, namly related to students difficulty in speaking, lack of vocabulary used, lack of pronouncation, and lack of knowledge about listening. And researchers used five aspects in giving scored namly Fluency, pronouncation, Accuracy, Clarity, and Performance skill.The researchers concluded in the other words that there was a significant analysis of students difficulties in reporting procedure text. It is suggested that English Teachers must practicing they speaking skill.

Abstract

This study aims to see whether e-learning has an effect on the progress of students' speaking skill and know the process of students' speaking skill in e-learning. This research uses quantitative methods with a descriptive approach. The study population was SMP Pencawan Medan with a sample of seventh grade of junior high school students. The data was collected by first explaining the recorded material orally through the WhatsApp group which contained 20 students and after that the students collected the audio of their voice by recording. The results of this study indicate that in seventh grade student s at SMP PENCAWAN MEDAN who can understand 20 students who have experienced a decreasing in speaking during face to face leaning before pandemic than e-learning from the score table during the pandemic, from the table of score during the pandemic, there were 2 students with excellent categories, no students with nice category, 8 students with the sufficient categories and 10 students with the not satisfactory categories. The researchers find some problems, namely in pronunciation, fluently, vocabulary and accuracy. When in e-learning process, students become embarrassed to speak and become lazy to speak English, then there is a decreasing in vocabulary, a decreasing in pronunciation and a decreasing in students' speaking fluency and accuracy.Keywords: E-learning; speaking skills; progress.

Abstract

 The purpose of this study was to determine the types of phrases and the rules of phrase structure in Anneth's song lyrics. Researchers also want to know the extent to which students' ability to know about phrases. Class IX students selected as participants consisted of 59 students at SMP Adventist 2 Medan. The data was obtained by providing questionnaires about what phrases are, types of phrases, and what are sentences. The researcher introduced the types of phrases in the form of tables and tree diagrams. The table form is in the form of the first to the last lyrics, while the tree diagram is made by dividing the large categories into smaller levels, each word in the song lyrics is adjusted to the contents of the table so that it can form phrases and sentences. The types of phrases contained in the song are noun phrase (NP), verb phrase (VP), adverb phrase (AdvP), adjective phrase (AP), and preposition phrase (PP). The basic phrase structure rules in the song are: S : NP (Aux) VP, NP : {Det (Adj) N, Pro, N (PP)}, VP : V (NP) (PP) (Adv), AP : A(PP), AdvP : Aux (AdvP), PP : P (NP).Keywords: phrase; phrase structure rules; song lyrics.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the students’ ability of second grade SMP Talitakum to use personal pronouns in narrative text. The subject of this study are students of second grade and the object of this study was the students' ability to use pronouns in narrative text. The sample of this study are 16 students. Data collection techniques in this study use test and interviews. Based on the data analyzed, the researchers concluded that the students' ability to use pronouns in the narrative text was 68.43% and the students' ability to use personal pronouns in the narrative text is 62.93%. The study concludes that the difficulty affecting students in using pronouns was a lack of understanding of pronouns and narrative text even though they had been taught by the teacher and the lack of grammar books.

Abstract

Writing is an ability to be able to express their opinions through an article. Writing models have many forms and kinds. Descriptive text is one of them. Descriptive text is text whose content aims to explain a thing, whether it's about a person, an object or a certain condition whose characteristics need to be explained. Researchers see that problems emerge among students in writing descriptive texts. This problem is seen from the ability of students who are still considered lacking in describing a matter in descriptive text. From there researchers moved to conduct research using qualitative research methods to see and examine the problems that occur and strive to resolve existing problems. And from the results of research that researchers have done, researchers found several factors classified through the analysis model, namely related to students' problems in seeing details of a matter, lack of vocabulary used, to the lack of knowledge about grammar related to adjective order. The researcher concludes that this problem is a problem that needs and is worth studying. It aims to develop a newer educational model for later research with this research which is used as a reference and or reference for future researchers.

Abstract

Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PPM) ini bertujuan untuk menumbuhkan minat budaya membaca dan menulis / budaya literasi siswa-siswa Kelas 5 Akselerasi di SDN Percobaan Medan terhadap Bahasa Inggris, dengan tujuan agar siswa-siswa dapat menguasai literasi Bahasa Inggris yang di dapatkan dalam materi Story Telling yang di ajarkan. Dalam Pengabdian Masyarakat kali ini, ada 5 tahapan untuk metode yang telah dilalui yang terdiri dari observasi, perencanaan, pelaksanaan, penerapan, dan evaluasi. Hasil dari PPM ini menunjukan bahwa program Pelatihan Literasi Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Percobaan Medan merupakan  program yang bagus karena dapat membantu siswa dalam memahami Literasi Bahasa Inggris khususnya dalam Story Telling. Siswa-siswa juga mengalami pengalaman belajar yang menyenangkan karena mereka juga mempraktikan bahan literasi tersebut di depan kelas. Hal ini juga melatih dan membangun rasa percaya diri siswa sehingga di harapkan nantinya dapat bernilai positif dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar, khususnya dalam pelajaran Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Tujuan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa kelas 4 SD Muhammadiyah 1 Medan dalam melafalkan / mengucapkan kosakata Bahasa Inggris dengan tepat. Para siswa diberikan pelatihan agar dapat mengucapkan kosa kata dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan baik dan benar melalui metode Story Telling yang di ajarkan dengan tepat. PKM ini juga bertujuan untuk membangun kepercayaan diri siswa dalam membaca teks berbahasa Inggris serta menambah ilmu pengetahuan dalam ejaaan bahasa inggris yang baik dan benar. Dalam Pengabdian Masyarakat ini memiliki 5 tahapan untuk metode yang telah dilalui yang terdiri dari observasi, perencanaan, pelaksanaan, penerapan, dan evaluasi. Hasil dari PKM ini menunjukan bahwa program Pelatihan Membaca Bahasa Inggris melalui Metode Storytelling di SD Muhammadiyah 1 Medan merupakan program yang sangat bagus dan menarik karena dapat membantu siswa dalam memahami cara pelafalan Bahasa Inggris dengan baik khususnya dalam Story Telling. Siswa-siswa juga merasakan proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris menjadi lebih menyenangkan dan menambah kosa kata baru melalui materi yang diberikan di depan kelas. Hal ini di harapkan nantinya dapat bernilai positif dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar, khususnya dalam proses pelajaran Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds of errors and the dominant error at the first grade students of SMP Swasta Kartika 1-2 Medan in constructing negative and interrogative sentences by using simple present tense in academic year 2019/2020. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive method. The sample of this research were the first grade students of SMP Swasta Kartika 1-2 Medan with 28 students in VII-3s’ class. The data were gathered by using written test which consisted of 20 questions and were analysed by the researchers with identify each error that made by the students. The findings showed there were 197 (35,55%) case of errors on misformation as a type of dominant; 177 (31,94%) case of errors on omission; 165 (29,78%) case of errors on addition; and 15 (2,70%) case of errors on misordering. In conclusion there were 4 kinds of errors, namely: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Where error of misformation was type of dominant errors. Abstract

The aim of the researcher was to find a technique that could increase the students’s vocabulary. To find out whether interactive method by applying crossword puzzle can improve students’ vocabulary. The researchers gives the students pretest and post test. The researcher use two cycles in this research.We can see that in the first cycle the number of students who got a score of 75 was 6.6% andin the second cycle the number of students who got a score of 75 was 76.6%. This technique add insight to the student’s mastery of the English vocabulary and also it will not make the classes to be boring but also fun. Keywords: Class Action Research, Vocabulary,Crossword Puzzle.
