Abstract

Investigating goby fish is vital to perform an integrated and comprehensive study in order to maintain the roles of the fish, thus providing balanced ecosystem functions and services, as well as contributing to fish biodiversity. Local societies simply recognize fish species by their local names, which are not common. This condition, in turn, causes hitches in conducting further studies. Nike, the name of a local fish, refers to the schools of goby fish larvae whose adult phase has not been fully confirmed. This study aimed to reveal the species that categorizes as nike fish through tracing adult goby inhabiting freshwater. Two fish samples, i.e., Unknown 01 and Unknown 02, were taken from two sites in Bone River, Gorontalo, Indonesia. These samples were captured purposively using a hand net by considering the morphological similarity between the two target samples and the general characteristic of goby. Furthermore, the samples were analyzed genetically through the PCR sequencing method using the Mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase Subunit 1 (CO1) gene. Based on the NCBI database, Unknown 01 had the highest similarity to Belobranchus belobranchus (99.54%), while Unknown 02 was identical with Awaous ocellaris (100%). Unknown 01 and Unknown 02, compared to the BOLD database, the similarity level, had the highest percentage of similarity with B. belobranchus (99.85%) and A. ocellaris (100%), respectively. Therefore, A. ocellaris and B. belobranchus were strongly alleged as two species making up the goby schools in the adult stadia that reach freshwater during their migration.

Abstract

Nike is a terminology used by Gorontalo local community to name schooling of minuscule amphidromous goby fish that has a limited appearance in Gorontalo waters. Understanding the biological performance of Nike fish is vital for implementing management and conservation strategy. This study aims to analyze daily recruitment and to determine growth patterns of Nike fish population in nature. Sampling was conducted in the Gorontalo waters during March, April, and May 2018 using a fish net with a mesh size of 0.5 inches. The duration of the appearance of Nike schooling in waters varies every month. The number of fish samples collected each month in this study ranged from 150 to 300 individuals. This study reveals that body color diversity and morphology of Nike fish strongly alleged to depend on where and how long they appear in the waters. Based on the daily recruitment pattern, Nike fish population distributed in Gorontalo waters is predicted to consist of individuals from multi-generation with an average length range of 1.848–2.805 cm. During the sampling time, a positive allometric growth pattern indicated by the population.

Abstract

Regarding exploitation and optimizing fisheries resources management in Tomini Bay, the Layang scad fish (Decapterus russelli, Ruppell 1830) is one of the small pelagic fishes inhabiting the bay that still lacks biological information. The species becomes the main target commodity for local fishers as it is commonly consumed as a protein source for coastal communities. This study aimed to determine the length-weight relationships and the growth pattern of Layang fish caught by fishers from Tomini Bay. The samples were collected once per month at Gorontalo City Fish Landing Spot from April to June 2020. Tomini Bay was confirmed as the fishing ground of all the landed fish. Layang is caught by Mini purse seines with a minimum mesh size of ¾ inch. A total of 896 samples of Layang fish were collected randomly from the fishers' catch during their unloading activity at the landing site. Abdomen dissection was performed on all samples for determining the fish’s sex. The fish samples' total length and body weight were measured using a ruler (nearest = 1 mm) and a scale (nearest = 0.01 gram). The result revealed that the length-weight equation of male Layang was W = 0.000004 L3.1972 (R2 = 97.57%), and that of female was W = 0.0000007 L3.0613 (R2 = 98.99%). This result implied a positive allometric growth pattern, excluding the females in April 2020.

Abstract

Dulangeya Village is one of the villages in the Coastal District of Botumoito, Boalemo Regency. One of the Village's potentials in the fisheries sector is reef fish (stones) which are sold in fresh form or traditionally processed into hanging dried fish. Traditional drying techniques have weaknesses, especially in terms of product unhygienicity. This community service activity aims to improve the skills of local communities by providing education and training on the process of processing smoked fish through the application of a cabinet model smokehouse and vacuum plastic packaging. This activity was carried out in Dulangeya Village, Botumoito District, Boalemo Regency for 45 days. The training was carried out by providing socialization and education related to processed smoked fish products, followed by practical activities for making smoked fish and packaging. The target group for the activity is the fishermen's wives in Dulangeya Village. Through this activity, the people of Dulangeya Village gained additional skills in making smoked rock fish products typical of Dulangeya. Communities are introduced and given education regarding the smoking process using closed cabinet model smokehouses as an effort to optimize the utilization of trapped heat and smoke. In addition, the closed cabinet construction model is also intended to minimize product direct contact with pollutant sources. The community was also trained and improved their skills in terms of product packaging using vacuum sealers and vacuum plastic as well as packaging labeling, so that smoked rock fish products were produced which were hygienic and attractive. With this activity, the activity partner community has been able to make hygienic smoked rock fish products with vacuum plastic packaging and attractive packaging labels as an innovative product that is expected to improve the local community's economy.
