Abstract

Togean Islands in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, are famous for their tourist areas, rich in natural resource potential, and underwater attractions. Octopus is a high economic value aquatic biota in Togean Islands. This research aimed to determine the Octopus species in Togean Islands, Tojo Una-una Regency, based on their body morphology. Identification was made by noticing external characteristics, including the shape of mantles, arms, color, and hectocotylus. Observations on the morphology of octopuses found in the Togean Islands have many similarities to the characteristics of the species Octopus cyanea. In males, an organ called the hectocotylus is presented at the third arm on the right side of the body. This organ is not found in female octopuses.

Abstract

Gorontalo Bay, the estuary of the Bone River, is part of the Tomini Bay area. Nike, a school fish larva appearing in Estuary Bone only a few days monthly, suits the prima donna of the community and fishermen in Gorontalo. Any technical matters related to “nike” fishing have never been reported in a structured method. Therefore, scientific investigation is necessary to provide relevant information. This study aimed to identify the fishermen’s profiles and matters linked to “nike” fishing. Structured interviews using a questionnaire instrument were conducted to obtain information from Gorontalo fishermen who actively catch “nike” every month in Gorontalo Bay. The results showed that most “nike” Gorontalo fishermen are elementary and junior high school graduates aged 20-60. Nike fishing is done in groups using wooden boats with totalu'o or tagahu fishing gear. The operational fishing capital they used could be from boat owners, groups, or loans from fish collectors. Most fishermen sell their catch at the Fish Auction, Gorontalo City, with an average price of Rp. 20.000 to Rp. 40.000 per kg. According to fishermen, the “nike” fish population tends to be abundant in the waters during the east monsoon. When the population in the seas is high enough, the fishermen’s catch reaches more than 100 kg per trip. The high intensity of catching and the quantity of fish caught per season of emergence can threaten the sustainability of the “nike” population in nature. A more comprehensive follow-up study is needed to analyze the synergies of economic, social, and ecological aspects to increase “nike” fishermen’s welfare in Gorontalo with the sustainability of the “nike” fish guarantee.

Abstract

Highlight ResearchThe fishing area of S. leptolepis in this study was confirmed to be located in Tomini BayThe fish samples were gathered randomly from fishers' catch using purse seinesThe growth curve for the male and female fish data were both plotted following the trend of the Von Bertalanffy equationThis study estimates the growth parameters, mortality, and exploitation rates of the male and female fish separately.AbstractComprehensive data is required for implementing sustainable fisheries management. Population dynamic and stock assessment aspects of Selaroides leptolepis species in Tomini Bay have not been entirely reported. This study aimed to determine the fishing mortality rate and exploitation status of S. leptolepis in Tomini Bay by calculating Von Bertalanffy growth model parameters (L∞, K, t0) then plotting them into Pauly's empirical equation. The sampling was conducted monthly from April to September 2020 at Gorontalo City Fishing Port. Samples were collected randomly from five commercial fishing vessels shortly after the fishermen landed their catch at the fishing port. All fish samples were confirmed to be obtained by the fishermen from Tomini waters. The growth parameters of the samples were analyzed using FiSAT II based on Von Bertalanffy mathematical model. While the mortality and exploitation values were calculated manually using Pauly's equation. The study showed that the growth parameter values of S. leptolepis in Tomini Bay were 245.47 mm, 0.49/year, and -3.04/year for males, while 227.80 mm, 0.63/year, and -2.72/year for females separately for L∞, K, and t0. The total, natural, and fishing mortality rates were 3.06/year, 0.61/year, and 2.45/year for males and 0.99/year, 0.74/year, and 0.25/year for females. The analysis results showed that the female's natural mortality (M) was higher than the male. In contrast, the fishing mortality (F) and total mortality (Z) of male fish exceed the female. The exploitation value of males (E=0.80) was greater than that of females (E=0.26).
