The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of speaking material in the textbook "English for Senior High School 12th Class Curriculum 2013 Revised 2018" based on the criteria of an excellent textbook proposed by Savignon (2008) to illustrate the relevance of speaking material in the book. The writers also found that the relevance of the material spoke sufficiently with the 2013 English Language Competency Standards. However, some competencies did not follow the competency. The reason was that the textbook did not present the material in speaking.

Abstract

The study's objectives are to know what kinds of personal pronoun used in the novel and know which personal pronoun has the highest distribution. This article focuses on the personal pronoun. Frank (1972: 19) states that personal pronouns are divided into five, namely subjective pronouns, objective pronouns, possessive pronouns, possessive adjective pronouns, and reflexive pronouns. The function of a personal pronoun is to identify or refer to someone or the gender of that person. In writing, this can help readers understand the storyline more easily, to whom it is pointing, and the gender of the person without needing to tell him. This research is qualitative research designed in a descriptive study. The source of data is from the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, "Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four." The writer will analyze the use of the personal pronoun in the novel. It is found that the use of the personal pronoun in a novel is varies depending on the function.

Abstract

Learners' motivation has long been recognized as a critical element influencing the rate, success, and failure of second/foreign language learning. On the other hand, demotivation is considered the inverse of motivation and has a detrimental impact on language learning processes and outcomes. This study aims to determine the most influential cause of demotivation in adolescents aged 16-18 years learning English. It also studied the frequency and order of relevance of the demotivating variables to determine which aspects are the most significant and their relationships to the learners' gender and degree of education. The subjects used in this study were high school students who, on average, had the same background.

Abstract

Four language skills are needed to master a language: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Two aspects are needed to communicate in written form: vocabulary mastery and writing skills. Someone needs writing skills and extensive vocabulary knowledge to create good writing. Even so, it was found that there were still students who had difficulties in translating words from Indonesian to English and vice versa, challenges in using the right words, and problems in constructing sentences in English. In addition, some students still have limited knowledge of vocabulary. This study focused on finding the students’ vocabulary mastery level, writing skills level, and the correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills. A person will master four language skills, including writing, easier if they have a broad vocabulary. The more comprehensive the vocabulary knowledge, the more vocabulary will be used in writing; hence, the vocabulary used in the writing will be more varied. Correlation research was used in this study. The study population was 9th graders of SMP Negeri 1 Bandongan, and the sample was 29 students from class 9B at SMP Negeri 1 Bandongan. The study instruments were a vocabulary test and a writing test. The instruments were derived from previous research. The data taken was analyzed using a correlation test with SPSS. The results of this study show no significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills with the Sig value. (2-tailed) 0.145 > 0.05. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient is 0.278. Hence, the correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills was low. This study suggests that teachers and students focus on learning and mastering vocabulary and other aspects that influence writing ability and the writing itself.
