Abstract

Teaching writing is not as easy as we think. The lecturer needs a certain way to teach writing, especially in the university level. The students ability in writing a text type especially a report depends on how they express their ideas. That is why the writer applies thematic progression  as the approach in teaching report genre. The subject of this research is the third  semester students of the English Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Tidar University of Magelang which take writing 2 subject in the afternoon class. There  are  two  instruments  of  this  research;   they  are  students paragraph   in about  a  hundred  words  and  questionnaire  (closed­ended questions that is questions on questionnaire that limit possible responses by providing specific choices or option yes or no). The first instrument (students paragraphs) and the second instrument (questionnaire) will be analyzed quantitatively. The students paragraphs were analyzed according to the rubric scoring that refers to analytic scoring. In this action research the writer applies three things; they are pre-test, test in cycle I and post-test in cycle 2. After analyzing students writing, it can be concluded that the use of thematic progression is really needed in teaching writing. It proved that the mean score of each cycle is slowly increased In .the pre-test, students just write a report paragraph  without knowing how to develop their ideas. In cycle 1, students get a new way in writing a report paragraph by using thematic progression. While in cycle 2, the students are trained in applying thematic progression. Besides, students’ motivation and seriousness in learning writing improve. They have good encouragement after getting the treatment. Key Word: ability, theme, rheme, thematic progression, report

Abstract

Penelitian sastra bagi mahasiswa bahasa lnggris di fakultas keguruan dan ilmu pendidikan  nampaknya masih merupakan hal yang cukup rumit. Ada dua alasan utama yang dihadapi mahasiswa dalam penelitian sastra, pertama tidak tersedianya pedoman penelitian yang mudah difahami. Kedua, sulitnya menemuktm topic yang belum  banyak  dilakukan  dalam penelitian sebelumnya. Berawal dari dua  alasan  tersebut, penulis mencoba memberikan gambaran dengan memaparkan metode pengumpulan data melalui membaca  tertutup  dan analisis data.dengan beberapa teori analisis sastra yaitu: formalisme, strukturalisme, dekonstruksi dan kritik psikologi. Adapun contoh penerapan teori sastra tersebut diaplikasikan pada cerita dongeng yang sangat terkenal di dunia yaitu Cinderella dan Hamlet karya Shakespeare. Setelah memahami teori-teori sastra tersebut diharapkan siswa akan lebih tertarik untuk melaksanakan penelitian  sastra. Abstract

Dosen memerlukan cara yang tepat dalam pengajaran writing khususnya di tingkat universitas karena mahasiswa harus menulis laporan penelitian di akhir masa studinya. Selain itu kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis jenis-jenis teks juga masih kurang memadai. Hal tersebut akan mendorong dosen untuk selalu melakukan inovasi dengan menggunakan teknik pengajaran yang menarik. Cooperative learning adalah suatu bentuk kegiatan pembelajaran yang aktif dimana mahasiswa harus bekerja sama untuk menampilkan tugas tertentu dalam kelompok kecil. Dengan penggunaan teknik ini mahasiswa akan mendapatkan ide untuk menulis dengan lebih mudah serta menikmati proses belajar-mengajar yang menarik dan menyenangkan. Sebagai hasil akhir, kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis teks menjadi lebih baik.Key words: writing, text, cooperative learning

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of speaking material in the textbook "English for Senior High School 12th Class Curriculum 2013 Revised 2018" based on the criteria of an excellent textbook proposed by Savignon (2008) to illustrate the relevance of speaking material in the book. This textbook was published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia for twelfth-grade students through the 2013 curriculum and described the order of speaking material in the textbook. The writers also found that the relevance of the material spoke sufficiently with the 2013 English Language Competency Standards. However, some competencies did not follow the competency. The reason was that the textbook did not present the material in speaking.

Abstract

A textbook is one of the important things in supporting the teaching-learning process in high school. The material should follow the learning purposes. In this study, the descriptive qualitative method is used by analyzing the content of the textbook. The results of this research are divided into three parts, Compatibility; Skill Focus; and Language Features. The learning purposes and the materials are compatible. It is lack of skill focus in each skill, and the language features are compatible with the learning purposes. Therefore teachers should be more critical and creative in providing the material and conducting the teaching-learning activity smoothly.

Abstract

Untuk melaksanakan pembelajaran jarak jauh, guru harus mampu memanfaatkan teknologi dalam proses pembelajaran. Namun pada kenyataannya masih banyak guru yang masih mengalami kesulitan dalam memanfaatkan teknologi untuk pembelajaran secara daring. Dari fakta yang ada tentang kurangnya kemampuan guru Sekolah Dasar dalam bidang teknologi maka diperlukan pendampingan bagi guru-guru untuk memanfaatkan teknologi yang berupa aplikasi berbasis web, salah satunya dengan aplikasi Kahoot. Kegiatan pendampingan pemanfaatan aplikasi Kahoot dilaksanakan di tiga sekolah dasar di Kota Magelang. Kegiatan pengabdian ini terbagi menjadi 4 tahapan yaitu tahapan pertama yang berupa observasi dan persiapan pengabdian. Tahapan selanjutnya adalah sosialisasi pelaksanaan. Dalam tahap ini, tim pengabdian akan memberikan penyuluhan mengenai pemanfaatan teknologi yang berupa aplikasi Kahoot untuk pembelajaran jarak jauh. Alokasi waktu sosialisasi program pendampingan untuk pembelajaran jarak jauh adalah 4 kali pertemuan dan metode yang dilakukan di dalam sosialisasi pelaksanaan adalah ceramah, diskusi serta praktik. Tahapan yang ketiga adalah pendampingan. Dalam tahapan ini, tim pengabdian akan mendampingi guru untuk mengimplementasikan aplikasi Kahoot pada masing-masing sekolah mitra. Tahap yang terakhir adalah evaluasi, di mana tim pengabdian dan mitra melihat kelebihan dan kekurangan dari kegiatan pemanfaatan aplikasi Kahoot. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi Kahoot dalam pembelajaran di sekolah dapat membantu guru dalam menciptakan proses kegiatan belajar mengajar yang bervariasi serta menarik bagi siswa.

Abstract

English is a foreign language that connects people in the whole world. A guide has big role in tourism industry. He should be able to communicate using English because the majority of visitors to the temple are foreign tourists who speak English. The tourist do not understand the illocutionary acts performed by the guide in the form of directive, commissive, representative, expressive, or declarative. Furthermore, misunderstandings or misinterpretations occurs in the communication between the guides and the tourists. The objectives of this research are to analyze the types of illocutionary acts and to find the most dominant type that are found in guide’s utterances in delivering information. In conducting this research the writer recorded the guide’s utterances during guiding activities. The writer transcribed the data and analyzed them to find the types of illocutionary acts using Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts. The writer concluded that there are 5 types of illocutionary acts in the local guide’s utterances, they are directives, commissive, representative, expressive and declarative.

Abstract

Housekeeping is brand new material that the students have never had before. The language that is used to deliver the material is English, but it is English for Specific Purpose which designed to meet specific needs of the learners. So, there are a lot of new terms that the students hear for the first time. Moreover, the students have different capability in acquiring the material. The students sometimes cannot understand the material and it leads to a boring classroom situation. Besides, the students’ lack of vocabulary and the teacher still finds difficulties in choosing the right words to explain the materials. In this case, switching language used in classroom with the language that the students easily understand helps a lot. Code switching has various types and functions, and they are very useful. The objectives of the study are to know what types and functions of code switching used by the housekeeping teacher’s talks of “Ilham Cruise Ship Training Center Magelang” batch 16. This is a descriptive qualitative research that focuses on the Housekeeping teacher’s talks as the subject. The writer deals with the documentation of the teaching learning activities which obtained on November 6th until November 22nd 2017. The data collection is started by observing, taking notes, recording, and interviewing the teacher about his purpose of using code-switching in the classroom interaction.The findings show that there are two types of code switching based on Wardhaugh’s theory (2015), namely Situational switching and Metaphorical switching. Meanwhile, there are six functions of code switching according to Sampson (2012). They are code switching as equivalence function as metalanguage function as floor holding function), as reiteration function as socializing function and as L2 avoidance function.

Abstract

Salah satu dampak perkembangan teknologi di kalangan siswa adalah maraknya tindakan bullying atau perundungan. Siswa seringkali kurang siap menghadapai dampak dari tindakan bullying yang bisa terjadi di dalam atau di luar sekolah. Bullying yang terjadi pada siswa mempunyai dampak yang buruk untuk perkembangan anak baik untuk pelaku dan korban bullying. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membiasakan siswa berpikir kritis untuk menangkal tindakan bullying melalui penggunaan storytelling. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menguak fakta tentang maraknya bullying di kalangan siswa khususnya di tingkat Sekolah Dasar melalui observasi dan survey di 3 Sekolah Dasar di Wilayah Kabupaten Magelang. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa perlu dilakukan pembiasaan berpikir kritis sejak dini agar siswa mendapat pengetahuan untuk mengantisipasi bullying di dalam atau di luar lingkungan sekolah. Dengan demikian, siswa sekolah dasar diharapkan lebih bijak menanggapi berbagai informasi serta tidak takut menghadapi tindakan bullying. Kata kunci : bullying, berpikir kritis, storytelling

Abstract

Pandemi Covid-19 memberikan dampak yang cukup besar dalam bidang pendidikan di Indonesia. Pelaksanaan pembelajaran yang semula luring berganti menjadi daring dan menimbulkan berbagai masalah dalam pelaksanaanya. Sebagaimana yang terjadi di SD Negeri 2 Setrokalangan, di mana guru kurang mahir dalam memanfaatkan berbagai platform pembelajaran yang tersedia sehingga hanya memanfaatkan aplikasi WhatsApp saja. Dalam penelitian kali ini, peneliti menggunakan Edmodo untuk pendampingan belajar siswa agar lebih menarik dan efektif, karena dalam aplikasi edmodo fitur yang disediakan lebih lengkap seperti pembuatan bank soal, video conference, ruang kelas, dan masih banyak fitur lainnya yang dapat menunjang kegiatan belajar mengajar. Peneliti juga mengajarkan guru mengoperasikan Edmodo untuk kegiatan belajar mengajar supaya tidak hanya terpaku dengan aplikasi WhatsApp. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui keefektifan penggunaan Edmodo dalam pembelajaran jarak jauh atau daring di SD Negeri 2 Setrokalangan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis data kulalitatif tepatnya studi kasus dengan memanfaatkan Strategic Alignment Model (SAM) literatur. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa merasa senang terhadap pelaksanaan pembelajaran daring menggunakan Edmodo.
