Translating comic is different from other different text. Most of the text that is used in the comic is dialogue or spoken language that usually can be found in the subtitle of the film. Analyzing the accurateness of the translation text can be analyzed by using Metafunction approach especially ideational analysis. In translating text into target text, not all meaning is transferring into target text. It can influence the message that is brought by the source text into target text. Through ideational analysis approach it can be analyzed although not all the meaning is transferred into target text. This becomes the reason of taking this case as an object of this research. The aims of this research are to know the meaning realization in ideational analysis approach, and to explain the impact of ideational shifting toward the equivalence of translation in target text. The method of this research uses descriptive qualitative since the data and the analysis are in the form of sentence and description. The data took from Donald Duck’s Comic and its translation version. The technique used in this research is content analysis. This research also applies criterion-based sampling that is used only to get theoretically generalization.Since this research is hoped to give significant contribution to student of English Teaching and Learning in learning ideational analysis, the function of this research is to explain the impact of ideational shifting toward the equivalence of translation in target text. Thus, this research not only can be learning material for analyzing ideational in specific text, but also in learning translation.

Abstract

Four language skills are needed to master a language: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Two aspects are needed to communicate in written form: vocabulary mastery and writing skills. Someone needs writing skills and extensive vocabulary knowledge to create good writing. Even so, it was found that there were still students who had difficulties in translating words from Indonesian to English and vice versa, challenges in using the right words, and problems in constructing sentences in English. In addition, some students still have limited knowledge of vocabulary. This study focused on finding the students’ vocabulary mastery level, writing skills level, and the correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills. A person will master four language skills, including writing, easier if they have a broad vocabulary. The more comprehensive the vocabulary knowledge, the more vocabulary will be used in writing; hence, the vocabulary used in the writing will be more varied. Correlation research was used in this study. The study population was 9th graders of SMP Negeri 1 Bandongan, and the sample was 29 students from class 9B at SMP Negeri 1 Bandongan. The study instruments were a vocabulary test and a writing test. The instruments were derived from previous research. The data taken was analyzed using a correlation test with SPSS. The results of this study show no significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills with the Sig value. (2-tailed) 0.145 > 0.05. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient is 0.278. Hence, the correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills was low. This study suggests that teachers and students focus on learning and mastering vocabulary and other aspects that influence writing ability and the writing itself.

Abstract

Translating literary works such as novels, poetry, short stories, and dramas is widely conducted in Indonesia to introduce literature to the Indonesian people. In translating literary works, the transfer of messages from the source language must be appropriate and flexible in the target language because literary works have their aesthetic function, so translators need to have a broad knowledge of the qualified sociocultural background. Translators do not only translate meaning but also translate the values of literary works such as moral value and cultural value. The role of translators is to find out the equivalence in the target language and use their creativity to solve the non-equivalence in the target text. Equivalence is the main concept to achieve translation quality. This study aims to find the type of translation shift that occurred in the translated version of the children’s book entitled ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ based on Catford theory and to analyse the equivalence of translation according to Popovic. This research is qualitative research which applies content analysis. The data was collected through documentation. It is found that there are level shifts and category shifts in the translated version of The House at Pooh Corner. In addition, the types of equivalence found in this research are paradigmatic equivalence, stylistic equivalence, and textual equivalence. This research is expected to be used as the material for students to understand more about shifts and equivalence in literary translation
