Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of compost from oil palm empty fruit bunches with different ages, mulching oil palm waste, the levels of heavy metals in compost and its influence on the growth and yield of chili. Composting was assisted by the starter (PromiTM) with a dose of 0.5 kg per ton of chopped bunches. Composting treatment distinguished by the composting time namely 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks. Mulch treatment consisted of shell, fiber and empty fruit bunch chopped. The empty fruit bunch compost had the potential to decrease the soil acidity because the pH of 7.89- 8.66. The EFBs compost contained Boron of 7.7-10.7 ppm, 12-24.8 ppm of Cuprum, 0.05 to 0.24 % of Fe, 26.5-89.7 ppm of Mn, and 9.1-10.8 ppm of Na. This compost contained heavy metal Cd and Hg. Cd was detected in amount of 0.08 to 0.25 ppm. Hg was detected in amount of 12.9-19.5 ppm. Meanwhile, Pb and As were not found. Cd did not exceed the threshold. On the other hand, Hg was detected exceeding the threshold but did not affect the growth and yield of chili. Organic mulch from palm oil wastes did not significantly affect on the chili yield. Shell mulch had a negative influence on the growth and yield of chili.

Abstract

Celery (Apium graveolens L) is an important horticultural commodity with a high level of demand. The fulfillment of celery needs can be done by cultivating celery with hydroponic floating system. However, cultivation of celery on a home-scale by using hydroponic floating system is often faced with the issue of shade and nutrient availability. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of shade, variation of nutrients and their interaction on the growth and yield of celery. The research was conducted from March to August 2016 at Greenhouse Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sebelas Maret.  Research utilized two factors, namely the types of nutrients and shade levels. The nutrients composition comprised AB Mix, Composition I (NPK PhonskaTM 1g, KCl 1g, and Foliar Fertilizer GrowMoreTM 0.5 g)/L, Compostition II (NPK PhonskaTM 1 g, Foliar Fertilizer GrowMoreTM 1.5 g)/L and Composition III (Foliar Fertilizer GrowmoreTM 2.5g)/L. Shade treatments were 0%, 33%, 58% and 70%. The results showed that shading significantly decreased the growth and yield of celery. Different nutrients significantly influenced the root length but exhibited the same value on plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, number of clumps and fresh weight. There was no interaction between nutrients and shade treatments.

Abstract

In this study, we investigated nutrient uptake, partitioning, and production of two subspecies of Brassica in response to nutrient solution concentration in floating hydroponics systems. This study used a complete randomized block design factorial with two factors. The first factor was two Brassica subspecies consisting of Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis (Pak Choi) and Brassica rapa var. parachinensis (Choy Sum). The second factor was the concentration level consisting electrical conductivity (EC) 1 mS cm-1 and EC 2 mS cm-1. The results indicated the absorption rates of nitrogen (N,) phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in leaves, roots and stems were similar in both nutrient concentrations. In general, all combination treatments resulted more accumulation of P followed by N, also K as the smallest proportion. P was mostly accumulated at the root and leaves (19.60 to 25.90 mg g-1), while majority of N was collected in leaves ranging from 18.00 to 24.30 mg g-1. The highest K content was detected in the stem (10.70 to 14.20 mg g-1). P uptake was 1.69 to 2.47 times higher than K, while N uptake was 1.44 to 2.04 times higher than K. Both two subspecies and concentrations performed no significant effects on nutrient uptake. Although same species, the plant growth parameters of Pak Choi and Choy Sum are very different including plant height, leaves number, width and length. Both two subspecies adapted well with both concentrations. However, significant differences were recorded in the combination of subspecies and nutrient concentration on plant growth and production parameters. To achieve higher market portion, Pak Choi would be more suitable to be planted on EC 1 mS cm-1, while Choy Sum was favorable at both concentrations.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract The Covid-19 pandemic that has emerged since the end of 2019 has threatened the issue of household food security. For this reason, food security must begin to be increased at the household level, both in rural and urban areas. Urban Farming is a concept of cultivating food crops carried out in urban areas. So far, urban farming has become a trend for food fulfillment in urban areas for plant and environmentalists due to technology that allows cultivation on limited land and with an aesthetic touch. With the Covid-19 pandemic, urban farming must be organized more seriously to achieve food security. For this reason, the authors with the Women Farmers Group (KWT) Ireng Manis from Temu Ireng hamlet, Tegal Gede village, Karanganyar regency will initiate an independent village based on urban farming to realize food security. The method used in this activity is Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA). Participatory Rural Appraisal is an approach method in the process of empowering and increasing community participation, which emphasizes community involvement in the overall program of activities. There are four stages planned in this program, including: 1). socialization of urban farming concepts and provision of cultivation techniques for members of KWT Ireng Manis, 2). Arrangement of cultivation area with functional aesthetic concept, 3). Launching and promotion through social media, You Tube, print and online mass media, 4). Copyright registration and dissemination/publication of program results. The benefit of this program is the realization of an independent village based on urban farming to achieve food security.
