Research using the IPIP-NEO instrument is often conducted in Indonesia.Purpose: This study aims to analyze the quality of items and develop a short version of the IPIP-NEO-300 for Indonesian samples that measures thirty facets within Big Five personality domains. The processes undertaken in this study include item analysis using the Rasch Model, the development of a shorter scale, and validation of this shortened version.Method: The total subjects in this research is 759 people with an age range of 11-46 years. The sampling technique used for subject selection is convenience sampling, and data collection was carried out online using google forms.Findings: These results indicate that IPIP-NEO 300 and IPIP-NEO 90 are psychometrically acceptable and practically convenient for measuring Big Five Personality on the facet level. IPIP-NEO short version 90 has a high correlation with IPIP-NEO 300, which means that IPIP-NEO short version can be used to measure personality in Indonesian samples.Implication: The results of this study can enrich the psychometric literature in Indonesia and provide a basis for more specific and contextual personality research.

Abstract

People experience more rapid physical, social, and emotional development in adolescence than in any other developmental stage. The dramatic changes may cause them volatile mental conditions and difficulties in overcoming various behavioral problems summarised as internalizing (IP) and externalizing problems (EP). One of the protective factors is emotional intelligence (EI) because someone with good emotional intelligence can control emotions when angry and adapt to unpleasant situations. This study aimed to determine the role of EI on IP and EP in Indonesian adolescents. This study used a quantitative research design with a simple random sampling technique. The research subjects were adolescents aged 15 to 18 years (N = 300) who attended nine high schools in East Java, consisting of 96 males and 204 females. The research instruments used were the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (SEIS) and the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The results showed a significant negative role between emotional intelligence and internalizing problems (R2 =.391; F(1,298) = 191.649; p <.001) and externalizing problems (R2 =.281; F(1.298) = 116.230; p <.001). The higher one's ability to understand, regulate, and use emotions, the lower the manifestation of internal and external problematic behavior. It means that EI is confirmed to predict the IP and EP. The way to advance the capacity of adolescents' emotional intelligence is to try to express emotions and regulate and utilize their feelings. So adolescents do not develop mental health problems.

Abstract

Demographic factors contribute to the etiology of psychological distress in adolescents, especially as a mark in identifying the vulnerability of these adolescents to high levels of psychological distress. This study aimed to identify the effects of demographic factors, including age, gender, school origin, and parents' marital status, on the level of psychological distress in adolescents who are studying in high schools in Malang, East Java. This cross-sectional study used the Hopkins Symptoms Checklist 25 (HSCL-25) measuring instrument to measure the level of psychological distress in adolescents and data filling on age, gender, school origin (Public Senior High School/Vocational Senior High School/Islamic Senior High School), and parents' marital status (married, divorced, widow/widower). Eight schools in Malang City were randomly selected to participate in this study. 520 students from eight high schools participated in filling out the questionnaire. The crosstab analysis reports that 53.1% of subjects showed high psychological distress. Based on the results of logistic regression analysis, the gender (OR = 0.55, p = 0.002) and school origin (OR = 0.74, p = 0.027) factors contributed to the level of psychological distress in adolescents who were studying in high schools. Based on the steadiest contribution from the gender factor, female students were 0.55 times more prone to experiencing high psychological distress than males. Thus, developing promotion and prevention programs in high schools regarding mental health and gender-related issues is crucial.

Abstract

Teenagers are vulnerable to experiencing an identity crisis. This crisis encourages some adolescents to externalize their problems by engaging in deviant behaviors. One factor that drives externalizing problems in adolescents is their perception of their father’s involvement. This study aims to determine the role of adolescents’ perception of their father’s involvement in their externalizing problems. The participants in this study were 498 Muhammadiyah Middle School students in several cities in East Java who were selected based on a simple random sampling technique. Adolescents’ perception of their father’s involvement inversely predicted their externalizing problems. Adolescents with a higher perception of their father’s involvement tended to have lower externalizing problems. Keywords: adolescents, father’s involvement, externalizing problem
