Abstract

It is often found that students feel they are in the wrong major which leads to feeling confused about choosing their future career. As a result, students think they cannot choose a career that suits their major and end up feeling anxious about their future. This study aims to determine the relationship between future anxiety and student attitudes towards academic majors. This correlational quantitative research involved 150 samples based on purposive sampling with characteristics as active students in university located in East Java, female or male aged 18-25 years. The instruments used were Future Anxiety Scale for future anxiety variables and Attitude toward Specialization Scale for attitude toward academic majors. Based on the Pearson correlation product moment test showed that there was a positive relationship between future anxiety and student attitudes towards academic majors (r = 0,326, p < 0.001) with contribution of 10.6%. The higher the level of future anxiety of students, the more positive student’s attitude towards their academic majors. Implications that refer to the results of this research for students who are feeling anxious about the future so they can respond to their academic majors positively.

Abstract

Background: Little is known of how a healthy lifestyle and its health outcomes are related in university students in Indonesia. This study examined the association between healthy lifestyle markers (diet, sleeping hours, physical exercise, smoking, alcohol intake) and health outcomes (perceived physical fitness, psychological distress) among undergraduate students at university in Indonesia. We also examined gender-related patterns. Methods: A total of 616 undergraduate students participated in two cross-sectional studies carried out between 2011 and 2013. Six close-ended questions were used to measure health behaviors and perceived physical fitness. The Hopkin Symptoms Checklist-25 was used to measure psychological distress. Results: The results showed gender differences in physical exercise, smoking, and alcohol intake. A healthy diet, regular physical exercise, and adequate sleeping hours were identified as contributing factors for perceived physical fitness. The probability of experiencing mental health problems was 65% higher among sedentary students and being female doubles this risk. Conclusion: Engagement in physical exercise consistently contributes to both measures of health outcome. Further, this study found that female students had greater susceptibility to health issues due to a sedentary lifestyle than male ones.

Abstract

Covid-19 was causing a drastically changing situation, especially for healthcare workers facing increasing workloads and sudden changes in circumstances. These circumstances force health workers to adapt to these stressful changes. Cognitive flexibility is one of the protective factors for health workers to be capable of processing and coping with stress. This study aims to perceive the contribution of cognitive flexibility to stress to healthcare workers. The research hypothesis is that there is a negative role between cognitive flexibility and stress, which means the higher cognitive flexibility a health worker has, the lower the stress level. This study uses quantitative methods. Using random sampling techniques, data retrieval uses the Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) questionnaires. The subjects of this study were 55 health workers working at hospitals in Malang, with the professional criteria of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and midwives. Data analysis uses a simple linear regression test. The results of this study show that cognitive flexibility has a 33.3% effect on reducing stress levels in healthcare workers.   Keywords: cognitive flexibility, covid-19, healthcare workers, mental health, stress

Abstract

Adolescence is when individuals face various developmental tasks that require them to do extensive exploration. Drastic changes and exploration processes during this period can cause internalizing and externalizing problems commonly found in adolescents, particularly when they lack support from the surrounding environment, especially from their parents and family. Family communication patterns are one of the important factors that can help adolescents navigate various developmental tasks while exploring optimally. This study measures the effects of the differences in consensual, pluralistic, protective, and laissez-faire family communication patterns on adolescents' internalizing and externalizing problems. Using a simple random sampling method, this comparative quantitative study involved 408 Muhammadiyah Junior High School students in East Java. The instruments used are the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and The Revised Family Communication Pattern Instrument (FCP-R). The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed that family communication patterns have significant differences in internalizing problems, namely consensual laissez-faire (0.000) and pluralistic-laissez-faire (0.000). Likewise, in externalizing problems, family communication patterns revealed notable differences, namely in consensual-laissez-faire patterns (0.000). Of the various family communication patterns, only consensual laissez-faire and pluralistic laissez-faire can predict internalizing and externalizing problems. They must be tested further to ascertain the extent of their effects.

Abstract

Peer environment is a protective factor and risk factor for various possible adolescent behavioural problems. This study aimed to identify the role of peer pressure on the emergence of adolescent disruptive behaviour. The research method used is quantitative non-experimentation. A total of 279 participants were subjected to research using multistage random sampling. The study subjects were spread across seven Public and Private High Schools in Jember Regency with details of 203 female students and 76 male students aged 15-17 years. The research instrument used is the NPPI (Negative Peer Pressure Inventory) scale to uncover the role of peer pressure and the SDQ (Strengths Difficulties Questionnaire) to uncover disruptive behavior. The data was then analyzed using simple linear regression techniques and multiple linear. The results showed a positive role in peer pressure on adolescent disruptive behavior (β= 0.221, p<0.05). The two most significant aspects of peer pressure roles that play a role in disruptive behavior are involvement with family (β= 0.198, p< 0.05) and misconduct or deviance (β =0.192, p<0.05). It is thus understood that the higher the role of peer pressure can lead to a greater chance of adolescents bringing up disruptive behaviour.

Abstract

Many changes occur during adolescence, including physical, cognitive, and psychological. They must be addressed appropriately to prevent internalizing problems at this developmental stage. Problem-solving is one of the personal skills that eases the adaptation to drastic developmental changes. Additionally, gender has been found to affect internalizing problems. This study aimed to measure the gender differences in internalizing problems and simultaneously examine the role of problem-solving skills and gender in internalizing problems. Based on simple random sampling, 669 students from eight Muhammadiyah high schools in East Java participated in this study. Data were collected using the Problem-Solving Inventory (PSI), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and demographic questions. The independent sample t-test results indicated significant gender differences in internalizing problems (t = -5.73, p < .001), in which female adolescents on average scored higher than their male counterparts. The multiple linear regression showed that problem-solving and gender simultaneously contribute to internalizing problems and account for 14% of the variance in internalizing problems. Incorporating the development of gender-based problem-solving skills among adolescents is likely to help prevent internalizing problems.

Abstract

Adolescence is a transition phase from childhood to adulthood characterized by many drastic changes that make them vulnerable to internalizing and externalizing problems. However, parents can guide in managing the crisis by establishing warm, meaningful, and open interactions with adolescents. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between parent-adolescent interactions on the likelihood of experiencing internalizing and externalizing problems. This quantitative correlational study involved 180 participants from six Junior High Schools in East Java, selected through simple random sampling. Two instruments used were the Parent-Child Interaction Questionnaire-Revised Child Version (PACHIQ-R CH) and the Strenght and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Simple linear regression analysis indicated a significant effect of parent-adolescent interaction on internalizing and externalizing problems. It is suggested that parent-adolescent interactions contribute to the likelihood of adolescents experiencing internalizing and externalizing problems. Building warm, meaningful, and open interactions with adolescents assume to assist them in understanding the adaptive way of expressing emotions and overcoming the drastic changes during the transitional period.
