Abstract

Purpose - Hospital length of stay (LOS) affects bed turnover, discharge planning, staffing, and capacity. Integrated hospital data can strengthen LOS prediction and support decision-making. This study developed an explainable clinical-operational intelligence framework for LOS prediction using integrated admission data. Methods - The dataset comprised 45,000 admissions with supporting patient, diagnostic, prescription, billing, ward, bed, staff, and insurance records. It is based on a structured simulation designed to resemble the operational data of hospitals. An admission-level master table was constructed from demographic, temporal, clinical, pharmaceutical, insurance, operational, and patient history features. Length of stay (LOS) regression and high-risk LOS classification were evaluated using a temporal split of 2020-2023 for training, 2024 for validation, and 2025 for testing. Ridge, Random Forest, XGBoost, and CatBoost were compared, followed by threshold optimization, label screening, and SHAP analysis. Findings – CatBoost achieved the best LOS regression performance, with a test MAE of 1.606, an RMSE of 2.028, and an R2 of 0.614. For classification, very_high_los_q90 produced the most balanced extreme-risk formulation, with an accuracy of 0.885 and ROC-AUC of 0.802, whereas high_los_q75 yielded a recall of 0.998 and an F1-score of 0.604. SHAP indicated that prior admission history, diagnostic burden, medication-related features, and ward-level context were prominent drivers of LOS. Research implications – Integrated hospital data are useful for detecting prolonged and extreme LOS, supporting better hospital planning and resource management Originality – This study offers an explainable modeling approach using integrated admission data to support LOS prediction and hospital analytics

Abstract

Purpose – This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Entrepreneur Development Class (EDC), the foundational learning phase of Indonesia’s Wirausaha Merdeka program, by examining topic-level learning gains across ten instructional modules. The study responds to persistent limitations in entrepreneurship education evaluation, including the dominance of perception-based measures, the reliance on aggregate outcomes, the limited empirical evidence on Wirausaha Merdeka, and the limited use of normalized gain analysis in assessing instructional effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative one-group pre-test–post-test design was employed using a complete cohort of 550 students from twelve vocational higher education institutions participating in the 2024 Wirausaha Merdeka program coordinated by Politeknik Negeri Jember. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, paired-samples t-tests, Hake’s normalized gain (g), and Cohen’s d effect size. Findings/Results – The overall mean score increased from 70.40 to 95.25, yielding a high normalized gain (g = 0.84) and a very large effect size (d = 1.70). Business Idea Development emerged as the most effective module (g = 0.90), whereas Pondasi Bisnis Berkah produced the lowest gain (g = 0.68). The findings suggest that instructional effectiveness varies across competency domains and is influenced by both baseline knowledge and the characteristics of the learning outcomes targeted. Originality/Value – This study contributes to entrepreneurship education research by introducing a topic-level evaluation framework that combines objective knowledge assessment, normalized gain analysis, effect-size estimation, and significance testing. The approach provides a more diagnostic understanding of instructional effectiveness than aggregate program-level measures and offers practical guidance for curriculum improvement, quality assurance, and policy evaluation in large-scale vocational entrepreneurship programs.

Abstract

The increasing energy consumption in educational institutions presents a significant challenge for sustainable development. Smart campus initiatives, leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology, offer a promising solution for optimizing energy use, particularly for lighting and air conditioning (AC) systems. This study focuses on the design and development phase of a comprehensive social-technical framework for an IoT-based energy management system. The framework integrates ESP32 microcontrollers, Zigbee communication protocol, and a Digital Twin model to create an efficient and responsive control system. The primary objective is to establish a foundational design that addresses both the technical architecture and the crucial social aspects of user acceptance and integration within the campus environment, thereby supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The methodology encompasses a user-centered design approach, involving stakeholder analysis and the development of a system prototype. Initial results include the successful design of the system architecture, the creation of a 3D Digital Twin model for visualization, and the development of a functional backend using Home Assistant. The study concludes that a robust social-technical framework is essential for the successful implementation of smart campus energy solutions and provides a roadmap for future deployment and evaluation, highlighting the importance of aligning technological innovation with user needs and institutional sustainability policies.
