Abstract

This study aims to explore the experiences of Indonesian female tour consumers regarding risks they face when traveling domestically. Data was collected through focus group discussions (FGD), to nine female tour consumer informants who traveled in Indonesia. Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. The opposite grouping of keywords is done by creating a code and make narration. The results showed that there were four motivations for traveling, and two of them were related to risk. Female tour consumers want to explore new destinations, have high sense of curiosity, are interested in enjoying natural, cultural, and culinary richness. Forms of risk experienced by female tour consumers include natural conditions, geography, racial discrimination, verbal harassment, and physical injury. Female tour consumers anticipate risks by looking at various references, for making decisions, travel partners, and seeing publications from trusted sources. Although index and risk management have not been standardized in Indonesia, due to a travel ban in a cultural context, Indonesian female tour consumers tend to take risks to travel and repeat it several times. Behind the risk, they get important things such as unbeatable views, new experiences and knowledge, excitement, satisfying curiosity, and enjoyment of local wisdom. The findings on Indonesian female tour consumers are important input for tourism destination stakeholders.

Abstract

Currently, there is no undergraduate program majoring Events Management in Indonesia. It is a challenge for creating the syllabus that complies with national and global uniformity and still has own characteristic. The strengths of Events Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) are the ‘management, administration and operations’ sides, which applied by many universities’ curricula. Adding syllabi focusing on ‘consumptions’ sides of the tour consumer (or audience in events) is relevant in the tourism studies since it is strongly connected with culture and performing arts. The aim of this paper is describing the process of innovating the “Tour Consumer Analysis” syllabus in undergraduate Events program (S1 Event) under tourism study at Universitas Prasetiya Mulya – Indonesia by applying SCAMPER technique and continued with putting it all together into 16 sessions of the course. The syllabus was implemented in one semester to 32 students. Three kinds of evaluation and feedback were designed. The students presented brilliant event ideas and audiences journey. This showed that with this syllabus, learning objectives are achieved. Second, students upload their feedback about their understanding of the topic. Lastly, in the next semester, students implemented some concepts on their theatrical performance and art By focusing on the tour consumer, students have the ability to create events that can make them re-visit or stay longer in the same destination to give a bigger impact on society. Further research to conduct integration with other courses is necessary. Keywords: events management, syllabus innovation, SCAMPER, tourism curricula.

Abstract

Alongside with collections in form of historical objects, as well as objects related to human culture, museums have taken an important role in providing education, especially for tourists who visiting a destination. However, at its conditions who have lack of innovation, has implications for declining number in interest of tourists to come and dig deeper into the collections in museum. This research set an objective to answer how could technology applied in museum. Research has been done through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and depth observation conducted on January 2020, in Jakarta. Nine informants/participants involved during FGD, including 5 museums (public and private), 2 technology providers, and 1 museum users community. Research indicates that strong cooperation between museums and technology providers has been elaborated, in particular in several museums in Jakarta. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are two most applications applied. Meanwhile, museums have established several platforms for security and data collection purposes. Both parties will try to add more platforms through video mapping application, projection mapping, virtual tour, and internet of things (IoT) operations. Process of increasing experience and immersion encounters obstacles, to provide additional experience to visitors, so that all five senses that exist in visitors, can enjoy all museum collection. Technology could embrace interaction and immersion to add more experience value on visitors. Thus, tourism industry would be more attractive with the presences of museums.

Abstract

Music festivals are a medium for people from all walks of life to meet and engage especially between fans and their favorite musicians. Jogjarockarta is an international rock music festival held in Indonesia in the cultural city of Jogjakarta. In 2017, a progressive music group from the US, Dream Theater, was invited to the festival and performed together with Indonesian metal and rock bands. The purpose of this study is to describe the cultural meaning of the social situation created by the 2017 Jogjarockarta music festival. The data were collected through interviews with the promoters, field observations by attending the festival, combined with secondary data from social media in the form of information and comments about the festival downloaded from different sources. It is analyzed from the perspectives of tourism and performing arts in the event. The study showed that the festival created a social situation in the form of relationship between three actors namely the Promoters, Audiences and featured Performers. It was found that there are “other“ audiences represented by the local community of the city where the festival was held to support the festival’s success. Unique roles immerged in the form of host, intermediary and guest. In the context of tourism, this study found that the hosts were the ones who went on an adventure. They had a common similarity as “givers”. The guests, as the performers, entertained their fans to peregrinate with them, while the hosts educated the guests on the local culture and wisdom which the guests could bring back home as a source of inspiration for their creative works. This study provides another perspective for the promoter or the event organizer to create “a spiritual relationship” which is “a space” to inspire other people. This understanding will, in turn, ensure the continuity for music festivals.

Abstract

Virtual tours are chosen as alternative tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to explore travelers’ experiences in their roles as participants in a virtual tour of Batuan Village, Bali. Qualitative approaches were used; interviews and focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted before the first alpha test (conceptualization of the virtual tour). The 2nd FGD was held to understand the feedback for improvement on the 2nd alpha test. Then, the 3rd FGD was used to explore inputs that can be applied by practitioners in organizing better virtual tours. Through descriptive analysis, six points related to experience are concluded: (1) an enjoyable experience from travelers, (2) an appreciation of the destination’s uniqueness, (3) a requirement of devices and platforms for a smooth virtual tour, (4) innovation to create a narrative story plot, (5) a bold character’s personification, and (6) a social media account to publish the tour information. The biggest challenges of this study were the web-app development and the virtual tour platform.

Abstract

Drive-in Events are a new phenomenon in the event industry in 2020, emerging as innovations to overcome social distancing policies. The researcher was interested in exploring the experience of Drive-In Senja 2021 visitors using the event experience conceptual model, which helps add to the study of event experience and provides insight for the event industry in designing event experiences, especially Drive-In event experiences. This study uses the conceptual basis of the event experience conceptual model. Qualitative approaches and phenomenological methodologies, especially IPA (interpretative phenomenology analysis), were used to examine five informants representing three categories: couple, double date, and girls' night out. The results of data analysis found 37 emergent themes that formed 11 superordinate themes, which constructed the Drive-In Senja event experience conceptual model. The Drive-In Senja event experience conceptual model differs from the event experience conceptual model, namely a personal and social realms in a more detailed event environment. As a result, there are more superordinates in the personal realm than in the event environment, which shows the limitations of Drive-In Senja organizers in designing event environments during pandemic conditions.

Therefore, to make sure that POKDARWIS’ projects are suitable with the needs and the wants of the local comunity, they need to actively participate in the decision making process of POKDARWIS’ project. In order to achieve an active community participation, the local community needs to be included from the planning, implementation, to the evaluation of a project.
