Abstract

The objective of this research was to get empirical evidence of the improving the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement through KWL (Know-Want-Learn) Strategy of narrative text. The population was the tenth grade students at SMK Negeri 2 Palembang. There were 806 students and 60 students were taken as the sample purposively. They were divided into 2 groups. Namely, experimental group and control group. Each group consisted of 30 students. In collecting the data, the test were used (pretest and posttest). The writer used paired sample t-test (pretest- posttest) and independent sample t-test. In conclusion, there was improving using Know-Want-Learn strategy reading comprehension of narrative text, it could be seen from the results of pretest experimental group was 50.73 and the results of the posttest increased to be 78.60. The mean of score pretest and posttest experimental was 13.267. The results of pretest in control group was 48.07. The results posttest increased to be 61.53. The mean of score pretest and posttest control was 6.867. And also there was significant mean difference between the students showed that pretest and posttest experimental group was 78.60 and pretest-posttest control group was 61.53.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the learning system at Indo Global Mandiri University from offline to online learning. Online learning is a type of education that is provided electronically via the internet or other computer-based technologies. It is also known as e-learning, remote education, or virtual learning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges have conducted online learning during the previous three years. This study aimed to investigate the students' perceptions of online learning and the relationship between the students' perceptions of online learning and their reading comprehension achievement among English education students at Indo Global Mandiri University. The quantitative method used in this research was a correlational design to analyze the data. The population for this study were 121 English Language Education students. The data collection was done through a questionnaire of perception and reading comprehension test. This study showed that the perception of students was in the low category with a percentage of 38%, which means that the perception of English Education students at Indo Global Mandiri University was negative. While the results of the reading test of English education students were included in the advanced category with a percentage of 50%. It indicated that students' reading achievement was not much influenced by their perception of online learning.

Abstract

The present investigation was about to highlight whether the EFL learners had positive perception or not on English reading instruction with non fiction English texts. A design of experimental research which chiefly focused on the descritpive analysis was utilized. The sample was chosen purposively which it comprised of 17 male students and 15 female students of junior high school in Palembang. 10 question items were accordingly designed as a primary instrument in a close-ended questionnaire. However, there were twenty participants of which consisted of 5 male students and 15 female students filled out the questionnaire based on the time given. The research findings showcased that mostly the participants had positive responses (strongly agree and agree) due to the use of non fiction English text in English reading instruction. Thus, it could be concluded that the there was positive perception on the participants’ reading comprehension with integration of non fiction English text in English reading class.

Abstract

Teaching reading was something that was challenging for teachers because not all students can understand what they read. This study aimed at answering the problems of how the PQRST technique improved students' understanding in reading descriptive text. Then, the technique used to improve reading comprehension achievement in descriptive text was the PQRST method by using this method students were trained to understand the contents of descriptive text during 12 meetings. The sample of this study consisted of 33 students as control group of 34 students as experimental group. The data collection techniques used in this study were pre-test and post-test. Data analysis used t-test (paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test). The results of the paired sample t test in the experimental group showed that the obtained t was 13,552 t-table (df=23) was 2,068 at a significance of 0.05. This means that there was a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension achievement after being taught using the PQRST method. Furthermore, the result of independent sample t-test showed that the t obtained was 7.975 > t-table (df=47) was 2.011 at a significance of 0.05. This means that there was a significant mean difference between the experimental and control groups. Also, there was significant mean difference beetwen the students who were taught by using PQRST and those who were not. The results of the study that improved the action hypothesis was accepted. By using the PQRST method, the reading comprehension achievement of grade VII students of SMPN 38 Palembang in the 2021/2022 academic year improved.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an important aspect of language learning. Vocabulary is important to learn because it can help students understand listening and learning materials and create good sentences in speaking and writing. It can be challenging for students’ to memorize English words, therefore they still need to increase their vocabulary achievement in order to become proficient in the language. Therefore, the writer investigted the used of Action Race Game to find out whether or not there was any significant enrichment on students’ vocabulary after the instrument applied and whether or not there was any significant mean difference between those who were taught by using action race game and those who were not. The research used the experimental group and control group consisted 67 students’ eighth class SMPN 38 Palembang. To asses students’ vocabulary achievement, the writer proceeded the pre-test at the beginning of the research and followed the post-test end of research. The vocabulary achievement was analyzed by using SPSS. The result of this study indicated that there was there any significant difference between those who were taught by using action race game and those who were not. It was found that t-obtained value was 13.552 at significant value of p<0.005, the t-table value was 2.0369. Since t-table value of t-obtained is higher that t- table, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the null hypothesis (H1) was accepted. In other words, the use of action race game in vocabulary learning had positive effects on their vocabulary learning.

Abstract

In English language teaching, vocabulary is included in the four-integrated language skills. One of the media that can be used and is able to increase student interest in learning vocabulary is by using realia. Thus, this study tried to figure out the effectiveness of realia to enrich students’ vocabulary. In conducting this research, the researcher used quantitative methods by using two classes with the name experimental class and control class consisting of 68 students. Pre-test and Post-test were given in both classes, the experimental class was given treatment before the researcher conducted the Post-test, and the control class was not given any treatment. In analyzing the data, the results showed that the experimental class students' vocabulary mastery increased as indicated by the pre-test and post[1]test scores. It means that the t-obtain is bigger than t-table (14,723 > 2,034) and the value of Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05, then null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was any significant enrichment of students’ vocabulary being taught by using realia. Abstract

CIRC technique was effective to improve students reading achievement. This study aimed to whether there was any significant improvement in the students’ reading comprehension achievement in descriptive text after being taught using the CIRC method. the research method used in this study is a quantitative technique. in this study the authors applied experimental techniques because this school consisted of 11 classes for grade VII, the authors used 2 classes to be tested using experimental techniques so that it was easy to compare students' reading results. The sample of this research were class of VII.1 and VII.2 consisted of 32 students for each class. The data were collected by giving pre-test and post-test, also analyzed by using t-test (paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test) with the help of SPSS v.25 program. The result of this research showed that the p-value of paired sample was 0.000 which was less than 0.05, also the p-value of each aspects of reading in experimental group was less than 0.05, meaning that there was significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension achievement and students’ reading aspects after being taught by using CIRC method. The p-value of independent sample t-test was 0.000 which was less than 0.05, meaning that there was significant different between experimental and control groups, and the experimental students showed the positive responses and perception toward the teaching reading comprehension by using CIRC method. Therefore, the results of this research showed that the use of cooperative integrated reading and composition (CIRC) method improved students’ reading comprehension achievement in descriptive text of the seventh-grade of SMP Negeri 3 Palembang.

Abstract

In the pandemic era, all learning processes are transferred online using digital learning media. Learning media can be easily found by utilizing the digital era 4.0, one of which is the use of social media Instagram as a learning medium for teachers and students who can motivate and entertain students while studying. This research identified two problems: the significant improvement of the eighth-grade students at SMP N 3 Palembang and the significant mean difference between students who learned simple present tense by using social media Instagram as a medium for learning and who were not. This research was the quantitative method. The sample in this study was selected by purposive sampling method. The experimental and control groups were given a pre-test and a post-test to collect data. The findings of this research revealed that there was a significant improvement for the experimental class of 19.33 while for the control was only 3.57. It can be said that the research results from these two groups are the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. As a result, in the digital era, teachers can use Instagram as one of the learning media for students.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of semantic mapping in enriching students’ vocabulary mastery. Using a quantitative approach, the research involved 29 eighth-grade students from Tri Dharma Junior High School Palembang in the 2023/2024 academic year. A one-group pretest-posttest design was employed, with data collected through multiple-choice tests and questionnaires. Over twelve meetings, including a pretest, nine treatments, and a posttest, results showed significant vocabulary enrichment. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a Z value of -3.885 and a p-value below 0.001, confirming the enrichment's statistical significance. The study concluded that semantic mapping effectively improvement vocabulary mastery and motivated students to learn further.
