Abstract

The Catholic Church in Indonesia views the parochial lingkungan as a community of believers who live in a nearby neighbourhood, practicing fraternity, supporting and enriching one another in their life and ministry. The activities and meetings in the lingkungan are a means for the faithful to establish fraternal relations through shared faith experiences and joint ministries. However, the lingkungan members’ participation in such activities and meetings might decrease due to certain difficulties, and this situation can interfere with the effort of realising their ecclesial communion and fraternity. In this article, the issue of the faithful’s decrease of participation in lingkungan is addressed by offering some models of togetherness inspired by the Scriptures and the Church documents such as Evangelii Gaudium and Fratelli Tutti. The models offered refer to some important aspects as personal encounter, everyday conversation, and sharing of life. Each model explores a different point of view to develop some ways of building togetherness among the faithful in the lingkungan. These models are considered flexible as they can be (re)interpreted according to the relevant challenges and are complementary in their character. Models offered in this article can be seen as alternatives to the existing practices of meeting and catechesis in the parochial lingkungan. They also can help lingkungan administrators and their members participate more actively in realising the ecclesial communion and the Christian fraternity among themselves.
The Relevance of Catholic Theological Inspiration on Ecumenical Dialogue for Religious Moderation in Indonesia Tedjoworo, Hadrianus

Abstract

Ecumenical dialogue is part of the post-Vatican Council II Catholic theological practice that emphasizes the importance of openness to other traditions and a shared search for truth. In the Indonesian context, which is characterized by religious diversity and the challenges of intolerance and fundamentalism, Catholic theological reflection can make an important contribution to strengthening religious moderation. This study aims to identify and correlate Catholic theological ideas on ecumenical dialogue that can be the basis for developing a relevant and contextual interfaith dialogue methodology. Using a content analysis approach and correlation of theological ideas based on an integrative literature review, this study examines Church documents, the views of Catholic theologians Yves Congar, Walter Kasper, and John Paul II, and research results that discuss interreligious moderation. The results of the study indicate that receptive ecumenism, mutual spiritual enrichment, inner reform, shared witness, and learning through dialogue can be the foundation of a methodological framework for dialogue in religious moderation without losing the integrity of each faith. The practice of interfaith dialogue in Indonesia can be enriched with a transformative approach that emphasizes reciprocal learning, shared reflection of faith, and acceptance of diversity. The contribution of this research is primarily a fresh perspective and methodology in the contextual theological study of dialogue, emphasizing that Catholic theological inspirations can be used as material for compiling a program framework to advance religious moderation.

Abstract

Purpose: This study explores the construction of contextual models of the Catholic Church in Java by correlating cultural, biblical, and theological images. It addresses a gap in ecclesiological studies where local cultural symbols—such as pamong, ziarah, and padepokan—have not been systematically incorporated into Church models, despite their strong presence in the lived faith experiences of Javanese Catholics. Methodology: The research employs a qualitative approach using a reflective-hermeneutic method. It is based on secondary sources, including theological literature, cultural studies, and pastoral reflections. Thematic and narrative analysis is used to develop ecclesiological models grounded in symbolic and imaginative representations of the Church within the Javanese cultural context. Findings: The study formulates three contextual models of the Church: (1) the cultural model, emphasizing community participation and cultural rootedness; (2) the spiritual model, reflecting a contemplative and wisdom-oriented ecclesiology; and (3) the devotional model, centered on sacramental and prayerful expressions of faith. These models reveal that Javanese Catholics experience and shape their ecclesial identity through local symbols and religious imagination rather than abstract doctrines. Implications: The findings offer a practical theological framework for enhancing catechesis, pastoral leadership, and ecclesial policy through inculturated practices. The models also serve as references for other culturally diverse Church communities, particularly in Asia and Africa, seeking to integrate faith with local spiritual traditions. Originality and Value: This study introduces the imagerial method, an original theological approach that prioritizes imagination and symbolic experience in ecclesial construction. It contributes a systematic, bottom-up ecclesiology rooted in lived cultural expressions, offering an innovative response to the limitations of dogmatic and top-down Church models.

Abstract

This study discusses the role of charismatic leadership in the theology of the Catholic priesthood and its contribution to the development of leadership patterns in religious moderation in Indonesia. The main problem raised is the dominance of the hierarchical dimension in the Catholic Church, which can also be found in other religions and tends to ignore the charismatic dimension that can reduce tensions between religious communities. The purpose of this study is to identify theological elements in the Catholic priesthood and charismatic elements that are useful for developing a more inclusive model of religious leadership that supports religious moderation. The methods used were content analysis of literature in Church documents and the views of Catholic theologians, and their correlation with key findings based on qualitative analysis of survey data on charismatic pastoral practices among Catholic priests. Other data used include literature on religious moderation and charismatic leadership theory. The results of this study show that charismatic leadership, inspired by the theology of the Catholic priesthood, provides insight into approaches to religious moderation and reveals great potential at the level of religious leadership to create an atmosphere of peaceful fellowship among religious communities. This leadership model can mitigate interreligious conflicts in Indonesia and offers a new perspective for developing models of religious leadership that are more charismatic than hierarchical, based on an understanding of charisma as a gift from God.

Abstract

This article is an endeavour to be ‘imagerially present’ among the believers in Java, and in this way, could add to the sensitivity to what is happening in the praxis of faith of the Catholics in Java. Christian faith may have caused some changes in the believers’ imagination. Catechesis on the church in Java can take many advantages from this research, considering that its outcome comprises of the church images which can be used to enhance the catechetical material. The distinction of images appears in four dimensions (the believers’ imagerial preferences, the church’s relevance, the believers’ intentions to participate and their contextual and meaningful images). This research is an opening towards further reflections about ‘imagerial catechesis’ in Java. In this eye, it prepares a necessary path for deepening the conviction that the believers’ ‘cultural’ ways of being church are an essential element in the process of doing theology with images. No less than seventeen images have surfaced during the efforts of re-imagining the church images. These ‘cultural’ and communal images are correlated with the ‘biblical’ images of the church in order to unearth the believers’ interpretations of the latter within the sociocultural contexts.
