Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Pancasila is the spirituality that animates the life of the Indonesian nation. This paper aims to describe Pancasila as the spirituality of life for the Indonesian people. Based on the results of research in 2015 entitled "Articulating Pancasila as the spirituality of the pluralistic life of the Indonesian nation: a philosophical study", the researchers affirm and promote the relevance of Pancasila as the spirituality of the Indonesian people's life. The research method used in this paper is qualitative with a heuristic and hermeneutics approach. The results or findings of this study indicate that Pancasila originates from the culture of the Indonesian nation. It is an extract or crystallization of cultural values that are life principles of the Indonesian people. Therefore, the articulation of Pancasila as the spirituality of the Indonesian people's life seems relevant. The benefit of this research is to broaden the horizons of Pancasila in the life of the Indonesian people. In addition, this research is also useful for strengthening the commitment of the Indonesian people in implementing, affirming, and promoting the values of Pancasila in the practice of life.

Abstract

Jürgen Habermas is a second generation Frankfurt critical theory thinker who offers a new paradigm of critical theory, namely communication. He made an important contribution to the democratic life of complex and pluralistic contemporary society through his theory of communicative action. It offers a procedure for communicating through rational discourse to reach an intersubjective agreement. In a modern democratic country, public space becomes a forum where public opinions and aspirations are conveyed through rational argumentation as a form of control by citizens over the government. This public space is independent and free from state or market control. This article is an analysis of social media and its potential role as a public space, using Habermas’ theoretical framework. Social media has the potential to become a political public space because of its participatory character. Even though implementing social media as a public space is still difficult, social media still has a big influence on democracy and social change. Therefore, social media users need to have and develop their social media literacy which is based on the principles of solidarity, criticality and caution.

Abstract

Religious absolutism is one of the epistemological roots behind various acts of religious intolerance that threaten the order of life in a plural, dynamic, tolerant and inclusive democratic society. This research is a study of philosophical literature that explores the ideas of William James's pragmatic theory of truth and finds its relevance to religious education in order to anticipate symptoms of religious absolutism. James challenged the absolutism of truth that had been maintained for centuries in the Western philosophical tradition. Truth does not lie in ideas or notions, but rather in the process or event of verification and validation of those ideas or notions in experience. He offers a pragmatic concept of truth that takes into account the practical consequences of ideas in experience. For him, truth should be dynamic, open, continuously growing and plural. Inspired by James' ideas, the author conveys the importance of religious truth and religious education interpreted in a more pragmatic framework. Religious truth is not only built from religious dogma or doctrine but is a reflective and dialogical process through the experience of faith, which is formed in relation to other truths. In a contemporary pluralistic society, religious education cannot be reduced to simply teaching religious doctrine or dogma. Religious education needs to be carried out within a pragmatic framework as a form of religious moderation education that pays attention to efforts to develop critical-reflective abilities to grow faith in a sustainable manner, creatively interpreting human experience, as well as forming human ethical character to maintain a harmonious life together.

Abstract

Critique of photography came into view from within. The advance of the technology of photography always opens the possibility that a photograph can be manipulated, especially from the time of the invention of digital technology. The implication is that subjectivity and intentionality are interwoven with the photographical processes. Photographical truth in journalism cannot rely on the singular and absolute ‘mechanical’ truth, but on its ‘contextualisation’ that cannot presuppose intersubjective agreements in producing common measures. This paper aims at affirming the position that one can make sense of the objectivity of journalism photography only in the context of intersubjective consensus. The distinctiveness of a photograph compared to other visual and expressive media lies in the process and the procedure of the making. The problem is a photograph does not tell how it is made. The causal relation in the photographical process gives the epistemological status of a photograph. Photography today cannot be understood within the causality framework that is too instrumentalistic and impersonal. Photography becomes more and more intentional, like painting and furthermore text. Major themes like causality, correspondence, accurateness, and objectivity are contested. However, photography is still powerful not only by virtue of its descriptive-explanatory role in imaging the reality in a realistic way, but also on account of its metaphorical aspect. “Photography is dead” only if it is considered as a representation of the reality. Photography will not die if it is seen poetically as our interpretation of reality.

Abstract

The meaning of eating is often reduced to concern objects or properties. Food is quite often understood as merely nutritive materials to fulfill the biological needs in order to survive or to satisfy human psychological desire. From this perspective, eating is tragically seen as killing for living. Eating thus becomes a consumptive and exploitative action. Nevertheless, eating can be a more productive act if food is not only construed as object or property, but as human strategy or means to construct relationships in social life. Inspired by Foucault, this paper shows that the meaning of food ought to be extended from the nutritive intrinsic aspects toward the political or cultural aspects; that is, food as a means to construct subject. In a sense, food governs or normalizes people in their social life. Therefore, food and eating give rise to knowledge, value order, behavioral patterns, lifestyles, or beliefs: they become the creative and transformative energy of the civilization.
