Abstract

Paddy and maize are two important food crops in Indonesia and mainly produced in Java Island. This research aimed to know the impact of El Nino and La Nina on paddy and maize farmer’s supply in Java. Cross sectional data from four provinces in Java was combined with time series data during 1987-2006. Paddy supply was estimated using log model, while maize supply used autoregressive model; each was estimated using two types of regression function. First, it included dummy variable of El Nino and La Nina to know their influence into paddy and maize supply. Second, Southern Oscillation Index was used to analyze the supply changing when El Nino or La Nina occur. The result showed that El Nino and La Nina did not influence paddy supply, while La Nina influenced maize supply in Java. Maize supply increased when La Nina occurred.

Abstract

Organic farming has attracted increasing attention in recent decades. Many believe this is necessary to maintain agricultural production while addressing environmental damages caused by conventional farming methods. However, the adoption of organic vegetable farming in Indonesia is still fairly slow. The fact that only a small number of farmers adopt organic farming begs explanation. Studies have shown that intention determines human behaviors. The problem is that intention to choose organic farming does not always manifest in behavior. To address this problem it is helpful to consider three factors affect how intention manifest in behavior, namely attitudes, subjective norms, and behavioral control. Based on in the case study on the central vegetable farming area of Kopeng village where conventional farming is still dominant, this paper analyzes the intention organic farmers in the light of the theory of planned behavior. Applying the SEM-PLS model of analysis, it identifies the key-driver organic farmers. This study found that farmers’ positive attitude toward organic farming is not the main drive in their shift from non-organic to organic farming. Rather than subjective norms, behavior control has the greater influence on the farmers’ choice to adopt organic vegetable farming. Famers view organic agriculture positively; but  the main obstacle is the access to information about organics, certification capabilities and other aspects of behavioral control  which make adoption rate for organic vegetable farming is still low.

Abstract

The study shows that there was variation in the process of cassava-based food production. In Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY) and Central Java, the farming systems were still subsistence oriented as the members still carried out traditional farming and worked without practicing intensive farming. However, the cassava-based food processing had already been commercially oriented. Some farmers have successfully collaborated with the larger cassava industry who were profit and commercially oriented. Some agribusiness units required specific varieties, but others opened to any varieties of cassava. The various arrangements have created different patterns of partnership. There were three types of business partnerships namely (1) growers and small-scale manufacturers; (2) partnership among growers, raw material processors, food manufacturers, and distributors or sellers; and (3) partnership among growers, small or large manufacturers and distributors or sellers. Among those three patterns, some enterprises had already performed a business-oriented processing method and quality assurance which requires best quality of raw cassava. This is resulted in a better selling price. Business partnerships can guarantee the sustainability of business relationships among business units. A better upstream-downstream relation needs to be developed to prevent the risks of raw materials supply.

Abstract

Employees are one of the main resources of the organization that has an important role in carrying out activities and determining policies in the organization. Companies need to be able to improve employee performance and create a sustainable competitive advantage. The application of human resource management practices can improve employee performance. But several studies state that intrapreneurial behavior and soft skill also affected it.This study aims to analyze the relationship between human resource management practices, intrapreneurial behavior, and soft skills on the performance of employees working at PT Perkebunan Nusantara XI. The integrated research model was developed by combining three main variables from various literature. Primary data was collected through 150 questionnaires for selected employees working in the head office and production work units. The validity and reliability of the model are tested using by structural equation model. This study was conducted at a state-owned agribusiness organization based on crosssectional data, so it cannot be generalized to a wider range of sectors. The results of this study showed that the variables of human resource management practices and soft skills significantly influence employee performance. The results of the study have the potential to assist policymakers, stakeholders, and organization management in adopting well-articulated findings to improve the quality of human resources and create sustainable competitive advantages. This study contributes to the expansion of literature based on empirical evidence relating to the relationship of human resource management practices, intrapreneurial behavior, and soft skills.

Abstract

Development of Village economic has been entering a new era through the involvement of Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes), which can be an important part of the development. All this year, the measurement of BUMDes performance has only been assessed by the financial aspect and tends to ignore the non-financial aspects. It is not enough for management to adopt dynamic changes in the business environment. The purpose of this research was to analyze the performance of the BUMDes of Panggung Lestari from financial and non-financial aspects. The method of this research was using performance measurement with a Balanced Scorecard (BSC) approach. The results showed that the total performance of BUMDes Panggung Lestari was 84.78 percent, considered to be in very healthy category (AA). Although the performance of BUMDes Panggung Lestari was very healthy, the improvements in its performance are needed, especially in the perspective of the internal business process that has not optimal performance.
