Abstract

The aims of this research were to find out whether or not there was a significant improvement on students’ listening comprehension achievement after being taught by running dictation method and their perceptions on running dictation. The sample of this research was the second semester students of English Education Study Program at one state university in South Sumatera, Indonesia. The method of this study was experimental study with a one group pretest and posttest design. The data were collected by using listening comprehension prestest and posttest. T-test was used to analyze the data. The results showed that t-value was greater than t-table. It can be concluded that running dictation could improve students’ listening comprehension achievement. Some implications are also made for future research.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the ability of students to use English collocation and its correlation with their academic achievements. The samples of this study are the 5th semester students of English education study program, UniversitasSriwijaya. Data were gathered by means of ability test using English collocation and academic achievements, GPA. The analysis results showed that there was a positive correlation between the ability of students to use English collocation and their academic achievements.

Abstract

To improve the teachers’ competencies and skills in using updated digital technology, specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), this activity aimed at improving the teachers’ competencies and skills in creating learning media by utilizing OpenAI: ChatGPT. It is a community service done by a group of English Education Study Program lecturers at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Sriwijaya. The activity procedures were program socialization, presentation, discussion, mentoring, and practices. The participants are members of the junior high school English Teachers’ Forum, in Indonesia, known as MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMP, in Lubuklinggau. Firstly, all participants were introduced to artificial intelligence and OpenAI: ChatGPT. Next, they were guided to create a new account, construct proper prompts or instructions, and integrate the platform into their English classroom. Before the workshop, the participants were given a questionnaire to answer. It was found that 100% of them never heard of or used OpenAI: ChatGPT. Nevertheless, positive responses were obtained after the workshop sessions. The participants agreed that it was really helpful for them. They can get creative teaching ideas, prepare classroom learning material, and access unlimited information. Therefore, 63,2% of the teachers strongly agree and 36,8% of the teachers agree that it can enhance the learning experience. Not only that, all participants encouraged the government or authorized institutions to give further workshops related to updated technology. As a result, the participants were able to create learning media using OpenAI: ChatGPT.

Abstract

The return of English as a subject in elementary school demands help to minimize the students’ vocabulary gap. Therefore, this study aims at seeing the students’ and teachers’ needs on attractive English learning media which can help them enhance the vocabulary mastery. Developing an English pocketbook becomes a solution. Then, as a part of a developmental research, a need analysis study was initially conducted. Applying quantitative design, questionnaires and vocabulary tests were distributed to the respondents. Respondents for this needs’ analysis process were students and teachers at SD Negeri 1 Talang Kelapa. There were 23 respondents, consisting of 1 English teacher, 9 male students, and 13 female students. The questionnaires in Likert scale format were used to check the respondents’ perception, motivation, and anxiety toward English subject at their school. Then, vocabulary tests were given to see students’ vocabulary mastery, both in context and literal meaning. The obtained data from questionnaires and vocabulary tests were then analyzed by using descriptive analysis. Finally, it was found that the students and teachers need a pocketbook which is customized based on their needs. The pocketbook developed needs to address the students’ low achieved vocabulary topics and the students’ anxiety.
