Abstract

Symbiont fungi are organisms that live in sponges tissue. Sponges are known to contain many metabolites which have the potential to be used as raw materials for medicine. Sponge Gelliodes fibulata is belongs to category demospongiae. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal time to obtain the best secondary metabolite profile results in the sponge symbiont fungus Gelliodes fibulata. This research is included in experimental research. Beginning with the fungi culture of the sponge Gelliodes fibulata. Followed by a fermentation process with variations in time 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 days to get the secondary metabolites produced. A liquid extraction process is carried out to obtain secondary metabolites produced during fermentation. The final stage is to carry out qualitative analysis with TLC and antibacterial testing with the well-diffusion method. The results obtained show that the long fermentation time influences the secondary metabolites obtained, and the metabolites possessed influence their antibacterial activity. The profile of secondary metabolites from TLC showed that the 10th day of fermentation had the most complex secondary metabolites and the highest yield 0.086%. The results of antibacterial activity showed that the 10th day of fermentation had the largest inhibition zone with 7.75 ± 0.44 mm compared to the other days of fermentation.

Abstract

Abstract

This international community service programme introduced Sunnah cupping therapy (Hijama) to nursing students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Nopparat Vajira, Thailand. The programme aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of traditional Islamic medicine and to foster cultural competence within nursing education. This community service programme used a pre-experimental design to evaluate participants’ knowledge of Sunnah cupping therapy. A total of 54 participants, including 46 nursing students and eight faculty members, took part in the study. The variable measured was knowledge about Sunnah cupping, assessed using a pre- and post-test questionnaire designed to measure changes in participants’ understanding. The pre- and post-test scores showed a significant increase from 56.7 to 82.5 (p < 0.001), indicating the effectiveness of the educational intervention. Participants reported greater appreciation of the holistic and spiritual dimensions of Sunnah cupping and its relevance to patient-centred care. Despite limitations such as the short duration and differing traditional medicine regulations between Indonesia and Thailand, the programme successfully met its objectives. This initiative highlights the importance of integrating cultural and traditional health perspectives into nursing curricula to promote culturally responsive care and strengthen international academic collaboration.

Abstract

Hypertension in the elderly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and reduces quality of life. In addition to pharmacological therapy, garlic (Allium sativum) as a complementary herbal therapy has the potential to lower blood pressure through its allicin and S-allylcysteine content, which act as vasodilators, antioxidants, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. This study aims to systematically review the effectiveness of garlic therapy in lowering blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension. The research method used was a literature review with a narrative-descriptive approach. Articles were searched through PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases for publications from 2020 to 2025. A total of 19 articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed, including randomized controlled trial designs, quasi-experimental, and pre-experimental. The variables studied included dosage form, dose, duration of administration, changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and side effects. Results showed that various forms of garlic, such as tea, decoction, capsules, black garlic, and aged garlic extract, consistently lowered systolic blood pressure by 10–30 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 5–20 mmHg in older adults with hypertension. Reported side effects were generally mild. It was concluded that garlic is potentially effective and safe as a complementary therapy for hypertension in older adults, although further standardized research is needed.

Abstract

The process of growing old is a phase in a person's life cycle with characteristics found to decrease every function of body organs, such as physical, emotional, psychological conditions and social abilities. Decreased physical function that also occurs in the musculoskeletal system is calcification and decreased production of synovial fluid in the joints. This is the cause of the elderly lazy to move because of pain and stiffness. Lack of movement will cause other health problems such as atrophy or contacture in the muscles. Lack of physical activity and sedentary behavior, resulting in decreased physical fitness and subsequent impact on physical health, well-being, sleep patterns and quality of life. In the elderly, physical fitness can be maintained with regular physical exercise from an early age, and carrying out a healthy lifestyle. Physical exercise refers more to planned, structured, and repetitive physical activity to improve or maintain body fitness. Older or elderly people are advised to take advantage of physical exercise. Some physical exercises that can be taught to the elderly. Activities in this community service are blood pressure measurement and physical exercise in the form of elderly gymnastics, which is carried out at the Mulyoharjo Health Center by involving professional students. When gymnastics, the elderly seem enthusiastic and can participate in activities and look fit.
