Abstract

The derivatives of curcumin are secondary metabolites belonging to the phenolicgroup. Some of them were reported to have biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant activities. In this study, a curcumin of(3E,5E)-3,5-bis(2’-hidroxybenzilidin)-1-metilpiperidin-4-onefrom1-methyl-4-piperidinone with 2-hydroxy benzaldehide has been successfully synthesized usingmicrowave irradiation method with NaOH (20%) as catalyst. Reaction was carried outfor 1 minute at 180 watt. The compound resulted was in the form of yellow crystalwith a yield of 72%. The compound was characterized by measuring its melting point, identifying by TLC, and elucidated by UV-Vis, FT-IR, MS, 1 H NMR, and 13 C NMR.Our result showed that the compound had the targeted molecule structure. Antibacterialtest was carried out using the agar diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella enteritidis. Overall, inhibition zoneranged from 6.5 to 10 mm and showed a very weak activity.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and classify the barriers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education around the world. The barriers have been investigated in the intrinsic, extrinsic, and institutional domains by reviewing the literature and related works. In STEM education, the intrinsic barrier focuses on the personality of teacher and student; and extrinsic barrier mainly results from the inadequate and or inappropriate arrangement of infrastructure. Meanwhile, the institutional barrier is specific to curriculum, policy, technology, as well as organizational sustenance in the education field. From the twelve of sixty previous studies in data resources, the obtained percentage of barriers are 38% for intrinsic, 33% for institutional, and 29% for extrinsic, respectively. It has been revealed that these domains have quite a similar percentage, but intrinsic factors came up as the most reliable barrier in STEM education.

Abstract

Salmonella sp and Escherichia coli are zoonotic pathogenic bacteria that can be found on beef. The presence of bacterial contamination on meat will impact the meat quality physical and in microbiological. The environment of the slaughter area is one of the factors causing Salmonella sp and Escherichia coli contamination in beef. The study aimed to determine the presence of Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli contamination on meat from Slaughterhouses (RPH) and Medan Traditional Markets. Sampling was taken in 4 locations; RPH, and three traditional markets: Brayan, MMTC, and Central Market. Meat samples researched from October to December 2021 at Laboratorium Balai Penguji Penyidik Penyakit Balai Veteriner Regional Wilayah I. Data analysis used Paired Sample T-Test. The positive result of Salmonella spp contamination was found one a meat samples from Brayan Market. Meanwhile, Negative results of Salmonella spp contamination were found on meat samples from Slaughterhouse, MMTC Market, and Central Market. Furthermore, Escherichia coli is also found on almost all meat samples from RPH, and traditional markets.

Abstract

Papaya leaves are one of the wastes that are commonly used as feed additives because they have good quality and are commonly used as medicine in livestock. This study aims to determine the effect of adding papaya leaf flour as a feed additive on the performance of broiler chickens. The study was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments with five replications, namely P1 = ration without the addition of fermented papaya leaf flour, P2 = ration with the addition of 3% fermented papaya leaf flour, P3 = ration with the addition of 6% papaya leaf flour. Fermentation, P4 = ration with the addition of 9% fermented papaya leaf flour, P5 = ration with the addition of 12% fermented papaya leaf flour. The research parameters were feed consumption, body weight gain, and feed conversion. The results showed that the use of fermented papaya leaf flour up to 12% had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on consumption, body weight gain, and conversion. The study's conclusion showed that adding fermented papaya leaf flour as a feed additive of 12% was more efficiently used to improve broiler performance.

Abstract

Vegetable, fruit, and food processing industrial waste has a low nutritional content. The quality of the nutritional content is improved by processing it through fermentation. The study was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design (CRD) factorial pattern. There were two factors (3 x 3), namely Factor I various maggot growing media (D1 = mustard greens, cabbage, and cauliflower leaves, D2 = banana, pineapple, and papaya, D3 = coconut dregs, tofu dregs, and cassava waste ) and Factor II fermentation time (L1 = 2 days, L2 = 4 days and L3 = 6 days), with three replications. The parameters of this study consisted of the nutritional content of maggot in the form of water content, dry matter, crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat, and ash. The results showed that various maggot-growing media had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the ash content and a very significant effect (P<0.01) on crude protein. No significant effect (P>0.05) was found on moisture content, dry matter, crude fiber, and crude fat. The duration of fermentation of maggot growing media had a significant effect (P<0.05) on crude protein and crude fat but had no significant effect (P>0.05) on moisture content, dry matter, ash content, and crude fiber. There was an interaction between various types of waste and the duration of fermentation of the media on the protein content of maggot. Still, there was no interaction with the water content, dry matter, crude fiber, crude fat, and ash.
