Abstract

Gay people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) face two stigmas, being gay and having HIV/AIDS, thus making their daily lives very complicated. To survive their life challenges, they need strong resilience. This study examined the sustainability effects of Group Positive Psychotherapy in improving the resilience of gay people living with HIV/AIDS. Participants were 18 gay people (9 each in experimental and control groups) living with HIV/AIDS and experiencing resilience problems. The study’s design was quasiexperimental, with an untreated control group and pretest and posttest dependent samples using switching replications. The instruments used were the Resilience Scale, the Positive Psychotherapy Inventory (PPTI), and the Day Reconstruction Method (DRM). Besides qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis was conducted through statistical testing using the Mann-Whitney U Test. Results showed that Group Positive Psychotherapy significantly improved participants’ resilience (U = 0.000; p < 0.01), and its effects lasted for at least two weeks post-intervention. In this study, the Group Positive Psychotherapy sessions on “three good things” and “savoring” proved most effective in improving the resilience of gay people living with HIV/AIDS. Group Positive Psychotherapy also effectively reinforced groups as a positive forum for sharing.

Abstract

Pursuing a romantic relationship is one of the most important developmental aspects of emerging adults. With the increasing divorce rate in Indonesia, the authors were interested in exploring how emerging adults make sense of romantic relationships after parental divorce. Three participants and two significant others were interviewed in this present study, in which interpretive phenomenological analysis was used as the approach to interpreting the data. This study generated two themes that show how emerging adults make meaning of romantic relationships, namely as a source of fear and a source of support. This contradictory meaning-making relates to the experience the participants had during their parents' divorce process and what they learned from the media or their significant others. These, coupled with human agency and the need for love, encourage the participants to learn from their parents' mistakes, develop certain behavioural patterns, and continue to seek romantic relationships in their lives. This study shows how interaction between parents during a divorce process can shape the meaning-making and behaviour patterns in the child’s romantic relationships. Therefore, it is suggested that divorced parents build an open communication, show positive interactions, and minimize exposing their children to negative interactions during the divorce process.

This study was conducted in individuals with chronic diseases, namely coronary heart disease (CHD). Individuals with CHD experience changes in various aspects of life that create stress in the form of anxiety. The MBSR program can improve the parasympathetic nervous system, reduce the production of adrenaline and epinephrine so that symptoms of stress and anxiety can decrease. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program on reducing anxiety in individuals with CHD. The research method used a quasi-experiment with the design of the one group pretest-posttest design. Data analysis with Sign-Rank Wilcoxon Test non-parametric test. The results showed that there was a significant decrease in anxiety in CHD individuals with a value of Z = -2.023 and p = 0.043 (p <0.05). Based on these results, the MBSR program has been proven to reduce individual anxiety with CHD.

Abstract

Psychotic disorders are severe mental illnesses that cause distress and hopelessness for individuals who experience them. However, hope marks the beginning of psychological recovery from a psychotic disorder. This study aims to explore the role of narrative-approach art therapy in increasing hope for young people with psychotic disorders. The research was conducted using an A-B-A single-case design. Participants were recruited based on the following criteria: (1) psychotic outpatients currently in the recovery phase, (2) adolescents or young adults aged between 15-30 years, (3) able to communicate, and (4) consenting to participate in the research. The Hope Scale and daily hope condition were used to measure the level of hope three times, namely before, during, and follow-up. Visual inspection indicates that there was an increase in hope after the intervention, both on the Hope Scale and in the average score of daily hope condition. Two participants showed a sustained impact up to two weeks following the intervention, while the remaining participant experienced a decrease in hope during the follow-up. Factors that could potentially influence these results will be discussed. This study provides evidence of the feasibility of narrative art therapy for individuals with psychosis.
