Abstract

This study examines the increasing institutional use of Arabic in Indonesian Islamic higher education and its role beyond administrative regulation. Although Arabic is commonly regarded as a marker of religious authority, its function in shaping students’ identities within institutional contexts has received limited scholarly attention. This study aims to analyze how Arabic language practices at Ma’had Al-Jami‘ah, Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, contribute to the construction of students’ religious–academic identities. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with interpretative analysis within the framework of identity linguistics, this study investigates institutional discourse, everyday linguistic interactions, and symbolic terminology employed in the ma’had environment. Data were collected through non-participatory observation, documentation, and field notes, and analyzed by identifying identity-related linguistic patterns in official announcements, instructional discourse, and daily communication. The findings indicate that institutionalized Arabic terms such as murabbi, ta‘lim, and halaqah function not only as administrative labels but also as linguistic markers that shape normative roles and value orientations within the ma’had structure. At the same time, differences between institutional discourse and students’ interpretations suggest that identity formation occurs through continuous negotiation rather than one-directional institutional control. Thus, Arabic operates both as a medium for transmitting institutional values and as a space in which religious–academic identity is dynamically constructed.

Abstract

This study investigates the deployment of impoliteness strategies in political discourse, focusing on the iNEWS YouTube video “Keras! Rocky Singgung Penjilat, Silfester Emosi hingga Keluar Kata Kasar - Rakyat Bersuara 03/09.” Employing Culpeper's (1996) Impoliteness Theory, the research aims to identify, categorize, and quantify the specific strategies used by the discussants. The quantitative analysis reveals that Negative Impoliteness is the most dominant strategy, accounting for 28.85% of all occurrences, a clear indication that speakers prioritized direct attacks on the opponent’s intellectual credibility and self-worth to increase social distance. Following this were Sarcasm or Mock Impoliteness (23.08%) and Withholding Politeness (21.15%). These findings demonstrate that impoliteness in this public forum is not merely an emotional byproduct but a calculated rhetorical strategy used to assert dominance, attack the opponent's negative face, and shape public perception. The prevalence of these strategies underscores the confrontational nature of modern political debates on digital platforms, where aggressive discourse is strategically employed to gain attention and reinforce ideological positions. The study emphasizes the critical role of impoliteness as a strategic linguistic tool in media-driven political communication. Future research should explore the perlocutionary effects of these strategies on audience reception and their contribution to political polarization in the digital age.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Music has become an important tool not only to support alternative narratives against the systematic efforts of cultural resistance. This can be found in the movements against Zionist colonialism that aims to erase Palestinian cultural identity. The movement also help strengthening collective solidarity and articulate hopes for liberation. This study discusses the cultural resistance embedded in the Palestinian Israeli conflict, focusing on the song Sawf Nabqa Huna as a medium of symbolic resistance and identity. This study uses qualitative methods through a critical discourse analysis framework to examine the lyrics of Sawf Nabqa Huna in the context of Palestinian sociopolitical conditions. Primary data includes the lyrics and their translations, while secondary data is obtained from academic literature on postcolonial theory and Fanon. Data analyzed through the Miles and Huberman model includes all elements, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that songs are not only aesthetic but also function as tools of decolonization that affirm Palestinian identity, dignity, and shared experiences. Furthermore, musical expression is understood as a multidimensional field of struggle that is political, epistemological, cultural, and spiritual, transcending the military sphere. Therefore, music plays a strategically important role in articulating alternative narratives, strengthening collective resilience, and reconstructing the authentic identity of Palestinians under occupation toda.
