Abstract

Silica (SiO2) has been successfully isolated from elephant grass by the sol gel method through pH regulation using NaOH and HCl. The resulting silica has an amorphous character with crystalline phase impurities. The isolated silica was then used as a source of silica for the synthesis of ZSM-11 zeolite using the hydrothermal method with a ratio of SiO2 : TBAOH : H2O = 1 : 0.35 : 25. XRD characterization results confirmed the formation of ZSM-11 zeolite. The SEM results show that the ZSM-11 zeolite crystal morphology is oval with crystal growth in all directions. Immersion of the synthesized ZSM-11 zeolite into AgNO3 solution and followed by calcination resulted in zeolite Ag-ZSM-11 which has different optical properties compared to the initial ZSM-11 zeolite. Zeolite ZSM-11 gives purple luminescence while zeolite Ag-ZSM-11 gives pink luminescence when illuminated under UV lights

Abstract

Calcium oxide (CaO) nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized from duck eggshells using ball milling method followed by simple calcination at 700°C for 7 hours. The observation on the morphology, size and shape of the particles of the eggshells powder was conducted through scanning electron microscope (SEM). The milling time was varied, i.e. 2, 6, 10, and 20 hours to observe the difference on the size of the produced particle. SEM images shows that the smallest average particle diameter was 520 nm, achieved by 20 hours of milling. When the particles were calcined, the average diameter was further reduced to 394 nm. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the resulting particles contain calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, and calcium carbonate.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation and feasibility of project-based worksheets through a low-sugar jelly candy making project in the Additive and Addictive Chemistry course. The project-based learning model was employed to foster active student engagement, enhance understanding of food additive concepts, and connect learning to everyday health issues. The study involved 30 sixth-semester students from the Chemistry Education Program and adopted a quantitative descriptive approach. The instruments used included observation sheets, worksheet assessments, posters, and presentations. All instruments were validated by three expert lecturers based on presentation, construct, content, and question aspects, with an average feasibility score of 89%, indicating that the instruments were highly suitable for use. Data analysis was conducted by calculating average scores using a percentage formula, which were then interpreted into specific assessment categories. The result showed average scores of 89 for student activity, 89 for worksheet completion, 97 for poster quality, and 88 for presentations. Each stage of the learning process was implemented systematically and demonstrated active student participation–from problem analysis to product publication. The final product low-sugar jelly candy, exhibited good quality in terms of texture, sugar content, and acceptability. All learning aspects were rated in the “very good” category.
