Abstract

Chalcones are a class of α,ß-unsaturated carbonyl compounds that forms the central coreof various naturally occurring biologically active compounds. They exhibit tremendouspotential to act as a pharmacological agent. It has been reported that they were active asantioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antidepressant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory andother biological activities. The chalcone analogue of 2,5-dimetoxibenzaldehyde ((E)-3-(2,5-dimetoksifenil)-1-(4-hidroksifenil)prop-2-en-1-on) was synthesized and tested forits toxicity using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The purity of compoundhas been tested using TLC, melting point test, analytical HPLC. It was thencharacterized using UV, IR, 1 H-NMR and MS spectroscopy. LC 50 value of toxiccompound is <200μg/mL. Our result showed that (E)-3-(2,5-dimetoksifenil)-1-(4-hidroksifenil)prop-2-en-1-on compound was not potential as an anticancer since itsLC 50 was 1949 μg/mL.

Abstract

A field survey has been conducted to study the potency of fruit of palm grown in West Sumatra for animal feedstuff. Three coastal areas which were identified as most populated palm plant in West Sumatra were selected as study sites, i.e., Padang city and the districts of Padang Pariaman and Pesisir Selatan. Five clusters of palm were randomly selected in each selected site and then bunches of their fruit were identified. The bunches were divided into 4 groups based on maturity status: very young, young, mature and old fruit bunches. The old fruits were then harvested, weighed and processed to separate their endosperm part. After weighing, the endosperm were then dried and ground for chemical analysis. Parameters measured included: number of bunch, old fruit and their endosperm weigh, nutrient content of endosperm. The data were statistically analysis for variance analysis in completely block design with 3 treatments and 3 blocks as replicates. Results shown that the highest number of bunches was found by the old fruit (6.7 bunches/cluster), followed by the very young fruits (2.7), mature fruit (1.7) and young fruit (1.5). About 22 % of old fruit consisted of endosperm part. The endosperm contains about 16 % crude protein, very low crude fat of 0.6 %, but considerably high crude fiber of about 50.5 %.

Abstract

Proficiency in numeracy literacy is indispensable for contemporary individuals, including comprehension of numbers, symbols, and analysis of quantitative data such as graphs, tables, and charts. In this context, students can effectively apply knowledge in practical real-world scenarios with robust numeracy literacy skills. The urgency of numeracy literacy skills needs to be increased by providing a training process through numeracy questions in various subjects including biology. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze numeracy literacy skills of high school students in Biology on biodiversity material adapted to the Minimum Competency Assessment questions using a descriptive and qualitative approach. A convenience sampling technique was used to obtain 80 students from Grade 10 of SHS IT Insan Mulia in Pringsewu, Lampung, Indonesia. The research instrument consisted of 11 multiple-choice Minimum Competency Assessment questions which included numeracy literacy indicators. The result showed that students' numeracy literacy skills were not satisfactory, consisting of 55.3%,54.4%, and 39.4% on content, cognitive processes, and context, respectively. The analysis reported students’ need for practice and improvement in the context dimension.
