Abstract

The objectives of the research were to investigate the effect of the implementation of Story Completion Technique in improving students’ vocabulary achievement in learning English, and also to find out students’ participation. The research design was one group pretest and posttest. Then, the sample of this research was class VIII F of SMPN 8 Bandarlampung in academic year 2018/2019. The data were collected by using objective vocabulary test and observation sheet. The statistical result by using SPSS 16 proved that the students’ score improved significantly with the significance value was p0.005 (p=0.000). The students’ mean score is 3.93 and in the post-test mean score is 6.20. It also affected on students’ participation in the aspect of asking, they frequently asked questions. Based on the finding, it can be concluded that teaching English by using Story Completion Technique could improve  students’ vocabulary achievement.Keywords: improve, vocabulary, story completion technique

Abstract

 Penilitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada i) peningkatan yang signifikan secara statistik dari prestasi kosa kata siswa setelah diajar melalui teknik membaca intensif, ii) aspek content words yang meningkat paling tinggi setelah diajar melalui teknik membaca intensif. Penilitian ini dilakukan di SMA Al-Azhar 3 Bandar lampung pada tahun akademik 2018/2019. Sampel penilitian ini adalah 30 siswa di kelas XI IPA 1. Instrument yang digunakan untuk mendapatkan data dalam penilitian ini adalah tes vocabulary yang dinilai oleh peneliti. Pre-tes dan pos-tes dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan data sebelum dan sesudah implementasi teknik membaca intensif. Paired Sample T-Test digunakan untuk menganalisis data dan pengujian hipotesis dihitung menggunakan SPSS versi 17 pada tingkat signifikansi p 0.05. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan prestasi kosa kata siswa yang signifikan secara statistik. This study was aimed to find out whether there i) was a statistically significant improvement of students’ vocabulary achievement after the students were taught using the intensive reading technique,  ii) and what aspects of content words improved the most after the students were taught through the intensive reading technique.  This research was conducted in SMA Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2018/2019. The subjects of this research were 30 students in class XI IPA 1. The instrument used to obtain the data in this research was the vocabulary test scored by the researcher. Vocabulary tests in the form of multiple choices pre-test and post-test were given to collect the data before and after the implementation of the intensive reading. Paired Sample T-Test was used to analyze the data, and the hypothesis testing was computed using SPSS version 17 at the significance level of p 0.05. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui kesalahan siswa dalam menulis teks recount dan menentukan tipe kesalahan berdasarkan taksonomi kategori linguistik, taksonomi siasat permukaan, dan taksonomi efek komunikatif dan (2) menginvestigasi alasan siswa membuat kesalahan.  Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah 31 siswa kelas X4 SMAN 1 Pesisir Tengah tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Instrumen dari penelitian ini adalah tugas menulis dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan taksonomi kategori linguistik, kebanyakan siswa membuat kesalahan siktaksis. Berdasarkan taksonomi siasat permukaan, kesalahan terbanyak yaitu pada kesalahan penghilangan. Berdasarkan taksonomi efek komunikatif, siswa banyak membuat kesalahan lokal. Kesalahan yang dibuat siswa terjadi karena kurangnya pengetahuan siswa terhadap tata bahasa Inggris dan pengaruh dari bahasa pertama mereka.This research was intended to (1) find out the student’s errors in writing recount text and determining the types of error based on linguistics category taxonomy, surface strategy taxonomy, and communicative effect taxonomy and (2) investigate the students’ reason for making the errors. The subjects of this research were 31 students of class X4 at SMAN 1 Pesisir Tengah of 2013/2014 academic year. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The instruments of this research were a writing task and interview. The result showed that based on linguistics category taxonomy, mostly students made syntactic errors. Based on surface strategy taxonomy, mostly students made omission error. Based on communicative effect taxonomy, mostly students made local errors. The errors made by the students happened because of the students’ lack of knowledge of English grammar and also the influence of their first language.Keywords: recount text, students’ error, writing

Abstract

Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan pada kemampuan siswa dalam kemampuan pemahaman membaca teks naratif setelah belajar melalui strategi story grammar. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif. Sasaran penelitian sebanyak 33 siswa kelas tiga di SMP Al-Huda Jatiagung. Tes membaca digunakan sebagai alat untuk pengambilan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adanya perbedaan signifikan pada kemampuan siswa dalam membaca teks naratif dengan tingkat signifikansi 0.000.05. Dapat disarankan bahwa strategi story grammar memberikan siswa latihan yang konsisten yang dapat membantu mereka dalam mengorganisir informasi dari teks bacaan.Abstract. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was a statistically significant difference of students reading comprehension ability after they were taught through story grammar strategy. This research was quantitative. The subjects of the research were 33 students at the third grade of SMP Al-Huda Jatiagung. The instrument used was reading comprehension test. The result showed that there was a statistically significant difference of students reading comprehension of narrative text with significant level 0.000.05. This suggests that story grammar strategy gives the students continuous and consistent training that enables them to organize the information from reading text.Keywords: reading comprehension, story grammar strategy, and narrative text.
