Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes in reducing Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in wastewater treatment in the oil and gas industry. High levels of TDS in industrial wastewater can affect equipment performance and does not meet water quality standards. The study used a descriptive quantitative approach with observation, interviews, literature studies, and company data analysis methods. The RO system implemented included pretreatment, chemical injection, high-pressure filtration, and storage of treated water. The results showed a significant decrease in TDS from 1,200 mg/L to 150 mg/L (efficiency 87.5%), turbidity from 3.2 NTU to 0.8 NTU (75%), and total hardness from 450 mg/L to 80 mg/L (82.2%), while pH was stable in the range of 6.8–7.1. These results prove that RO technology is capable of producing water with quality that meets the quality standards of the Minister of Health Regulation No. 492 of 2010. This study confirms the superiority of RO as an effective industrial water treatment method and recommends further research on operational costs, energy efficiency, and fouling control for long-term optimization.

Abstract

The problem of household organic waste remains an environmental issue that requires effective management in various regions, including Jelu Village. This community service activity aims to increase active community participation in organic waste management through the use of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. BSF cultivation technology was chosen because it can quickly decompose organic waste and produce by-products in the form of animal feed and organic fertilizer. This program was implemented through an educational approach, technical training, and direct mentoring for residents from several neighborhood units (RT) in Jelu Village. The results of the activity showed an increase in community knowledge and skills in BSF cultivation, with maggot production reaching 2 kg in three weeks and daily organic waste management of around 4–5 kg. Furthermore, the community was also able to independently build cultivation cages. This activity has succeeded in raising ecological awareness while providing economic benefits, and is expected to become a model for sustainable organic waste management at the village level.

Abstract

Traditional petroleum mining activities in 137 old wells in Wonocolo Village, Bojonegoro Regency Council District, East Java, have a positive impact on the local community's economy, but also have a negative impact on the environment in the form of pollution of surface water. The study aims to determine the quality of the Bongso River in the traditional Wonocolo petroleum mining area based on physical and chemical parameters (temperature, pH, DO, TSS, TDS, COD, phenol, and nitrate), as well as analyze the level of pollution in the river using the Pollution Index method. The results of the Bongso River water quality analysis contained parameters that exceeded quality standards, namely, SB 1 station with COD levels of 47.1 mg / L and Phenol 0.196 mg / L. SB 2 station with TDS levels of 1010 mg / L, TSS 93.60 mg / L, COD 94.0 mg / L and phenol 0.552 mg / L. SB 3 station TDS levels 1190 mg / L, TSS 1778 mg/L, COD 84.7 mg/L, and phenol 0.747. Station SB 4 levels TDS worth 1450 mg / L, TSS 1019 mg / L, COD 28.2 mg / L, phenol 0.632 mg / L and DO levels do not meet the minimum quality standards of 3.4 mg / L. Station SB 5 levels TDS 1310 mg / L, COD 103.5 mg / L and phenol 0.364 mg / L. Station SB 6 levels TDS 1400 mg / L, COD 65.9 mg/L and phenol 0.585 mg/L. Station SB 7 levels TDS 1230 mg/L, TSS 54.80 mg/L and phenol 0.556 mg/L. Salinity of the Bongso River increased from upstream (SB1) to middle (SB2); 0 ppt to 4 ppt (rainy season). Water quality status using the IP method shows that SB 1 and SB 5 stations are categorized as Lightly Polluted. Meanwhile, SB 2, SB 3, SB 4, SB 6, and SB 7 stations are categorized as Moderately Polluted.

Abstract

Wonocolo Village in Bojonegoro Regency is one of the traditional oil mining areas that still contains old Dutch oil wells. The presence of these wells has the potential to affect groundwater quality. Petroleum that contaminates the soil can seep into groundwater, posing a serious threat to areas that rely on it as a source of clean water. This study aims to evaluate groundwater parameters, including temperature, pH, cadmium, and sulfate, by the standards set by the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 32 of 2017, specifically regarding hygiene, sanitation, and public baths. Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling method at 14 points. Data analysis was performed using the inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method. The results showed that in the densely populated southern part of the study area, the temperature at sampling point SG 13 reached 35°C, and cadmium levels across all samples ranged from 0.059 to 0.156 mg/L, exceeding the permitted quality standards. In contrast, pH and sulfate values met the quality standards set by Permenkes No. 32 of 2017. Therefore, efforts are necessary to reduce cadmium levels in the groundwater of Wonocolo Village, Bojonegoro Regency.

Abstract

The Bengawan Solo River is a primary water resource in Central and East Java. Human activities along the Watershed (DAS) have affected water quality. This study evaluates the water quality of the Bengawan Solo River during the dry and rainy seasons from 2019 to 2023 using the Pollution Index (IP) method, based on secondary data from Perum Jasa Tirta I at four locations: upstream, middle, downstream 1, and downstream 2. The analyzed parameters include physical (temperature, TDS, TSS), chemical (pH, DO, BOD, nitrate), and biological (Total coliform) aspects. The results indicate that pH, TDS, and nitrate remain within quality standards, whereas temperature, BOD, DO, and TSS often exceed the limits, especially during the rainy season. The Pollution Index (Pij) suggests better water quality in the dry season, predominantly classified as "Lightly Polluted." However, in the 2021 rainy season, two locations reached the "Moderately Polluted" category, indicating that rainfall contributes to increased pollution.

Abstract

Robust, reliable, and trustworthy ground observation datasets are the preliminary requirement for assessing the impact of climate change over regions. Principal testing to assess the quality of ground observation rely on the missing data and homogeneity result. The study used 40 years of monthly rainfall documented from different topographical features in the monsoonal region of East Java, Indonesia. The test included annual rainfall, early rainy season (October-November-December), and primary rain season (January-February-March). The homogeneity of rainfall determined by absolute technique: Pettitt’s test, the Standard Normal Homogeneity Test, the Buishand Rank Test, and the von Neumann Ratio. Among the time series, October-November-December observation results in better homogeneity. However, the rainfall datasets during primary rainy season showed the worst homogeneity. By performing annual and seasonal homogeneity test from 67 rainfall stations: 5 stations out of data length required, 5% stations ‘rejected’, 11% ‘suspect’, 11% ‘doubtful’, and 73% were ‘trusted’. Therefore, a total of 45 stations can be used as metadata for relative comparison and 7 stations can be considered to be useful for analysis despite ‘doubtful’. The remaining 10 stations need careful consideration to be used for future water management.  Change point detected particularly between the year of 1997 through 2000. Pettitt’s test has outstanding results in the case of extreme climatic anomaly, but less sensitive of continuous abrupt change. The von Neumann test could detect abnormal data, but was not suitable for datasets containing few extreme values. The insights from homogeneity testing were: a) it is important to remove any outliers in the datasets before conducting homogeneity testing, b) both parametric and nonparametric homogeneity tests should be performed, and c) comparisons should be made with surrounding rainfall stations. Comparison with trusted long-term rainfall data is valuable for stations labeled as ‘doubtful’ or ‘suspect’ to mitigate false detections in individual homogeneity tests. The identified ‘useful’ rainfall data can then serve as reference stations for relative homogeneity tests. These findings suggest that reference stations should be assessed within similar rainfall zones.

Abstract

Vegetation dynamics in monsoonal regions are related to climate variability, particularly precipitation. Changes in precipitation may be reflected in vegetation conditions, yet studies on the temporal relationship between NDVI and Rainfall at the regional scale remain limited. This study aims to analyze NDVI dynamics and their relationship with precipitation in Bojonegoro Regency, East Java, during 2001–2023. Using Landsat satellite imagery and CHIRPS precipitation data, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was analyzed to evaluate seasonal and interannual vegetation patterns. NDVI values were calculated for April–May and October, representing the end and beginning of the rainy season. Results show that NDVI tends to be higher at the end of the rainy season, with a median value of 0.365, compared to 0.254 at the beginning. The highest NDVI was recorded in 2021, with a median of 0.596. Forested areas demonstrated greater resilience to climate variability than croplands or degraded land. NDVI and Rainfall exhibited a complex relationship, with significant correlations observed only in 2001 at lags –2, –1, and +2. The lag time responses of NDVI after specified precipitation can be used for forest management and planting. The analysis suggests that detailed assessments using time series data are necessary for a clearer understanding. NDVI alone is insufficient, and field validation is required to confirm satellite-based interpretations. Therefore, planned management required to enhance ecosystem resilience to climate change.
