Abstract

This study aims to explain the discourse structure, specifically the lexical and grammatical cohesion in the discourse of West Sumatra Province, with a discourse analysis approach. The object of this research is a special regional regulation (SRR) of West Sumatra Province, which is different from Regional Regulation (RR) in other regions in Indonesia, as evident in the use of local concepts and terms. This regulation is interesting to study in cohesion because its structures represent the social reality of the indigenous people’s lives. One notable regulation is Nagari, the lowest government level in West Sumatra Province, with authority to regulate their communities and customary land in the Republic of Indonesia. That social reality is illustrated in the cohesiveness and harmony of the relationships of the forms that construct the discourse. This mixed-method research employs both quantitative and qualitative data and applied lexical and grammatical cohesion theory in data analysis. Findings show that lexical cohesion is realized in the following forms: repetition, synonym, meronymy, hyponym, and collocation; while grammatical cohesion is realized in the form of references, substitutions, and conjunctions. Based on the analysis, lexical and grammatical cohesion are interconnected constituents in building the integrity of the discourse structure in the SRR of West Sumatra Province. Cohesion plays a role in determining the meaning of the discourse as a whole and reflects the coherence of ideational meanings in discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to examine Malay–Minangkabau mantras as ritual language practices through the perspectives of forensic linguistics and sociolinguistic–cultural studies. Specifically, the research seeks to identify the linguistic features of mantras at the phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, and pragmatic levels; to represent the linguistic identity of their speakers; and to explain the social and cultural functions of mantras within local communities. The study positions mantras not merely as magical texts or folklore, but as social–linguistic actions that record values, identity, and the cultural dynamics of the Malay–Minangkabau community. The scope of the research is limited to healing and protective mantras used in particular Malay–Minangkabau communities. The analysis focuses on linguistic structure and socio-cultural context without normatively evaluating medical or theological aspects. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this study integrates forensic linguistics, Halliday’s theory of social meaning (ideational, interpersonal, and textual), and the language–culture perspectives of Foley and Duranti. The research data consist of mantra texts obtained from the documentation of oral traditions and. The findings indicate that mantras exhibit formulaic and performative linguistic structures that function as mechanisms of psychosocial regulation within the community. A noteworthy finding is that mantras constitute a restricted ritual register with socially limited users and function as a collective linguistic fingerprint that records the identity, history, and cultural transformation of the Malay–Minangkabau community.

Abstract

This paper is a study of power in West Sumatra Provincial Regulation Number 7 of 2018 about Nagari which is analyzed by using van Dijk's critical discourse analysis (CDA), particularly the analysis of text structures. This critical discourse analysis study of the West Sumatra Provincial Regulation is descriptive qualitative by using observational method. The analysis of critical studies aims to see the hidden power behind the text of Regulation Number 7 of 2018 about Nagari which functions to assist and manage Nagari Government in West Sumatra. Critical discourse analysis of the regional regulation text is included in one of 9 (nine) interesting studies in the development of critical discourse analysis which is known as an institutional discourse because the regulation is a legal product issued by the West Sumatra Provincial Government as institution. Based on the results of the analysis, found power related to domination, ideology, and discrimination against Nagari society in West Sumatra. This research has an implication on the implementation of existing policies in Nagari society. The government as the ruling party fully regulates the Nagari community as an object without providing space to express thoughts and opinions. Likewise, the numbering order for defining Bundo Kanduang in article 1 of the general provisions in the Nagari Regional Regulation is located last and has indications of discrimination. The numbering has an impact on the role of Bundo Kanduang which is not a priority in West Sumatran society which adheres to the matrilineal system (maternal lineage).
