Abstract

The integrated cattle and oil palm production is currently recognized as one of the potential strategies to fulfill national meat demand in Indonesia. This study investigated the effect of parity on the performances of Brahman cross cows and their calves kept under integrated cattle and oil palm production. The cows receive natural mating with the provision of Brahman cross bulls (bull:cow ratios of 1:20). Data of body weight and body condition score of 300 cows were recorded after parturition. Data of body weight and weaning weight of their 600 calves (300 calves of each of parity 1 and 2) were also included in this study. Data were compared between parity 1 and 2 by using paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results demonstrated that the cows in parity 2 had higher (P0.001) body weight and body condition score than those in parity 1. Parity 2 also increased (P0.001) birth and weaning weight of calves as compared to parity 1. It could be concluded that parity has a significant contribution to the performance of Brahman cross cows and their calves, with parity 2 provides better performance than parity 1.

Abstract

The purpose of this current study was to evaluate the influence of nutritional flushing on body morphometrics of female breeding goats. This study used 32 local female goats or does with an average age of 3.281.08 years and an average body weight of 42.478.28 kg. The goats were distributed in a completely randomized design using a 2 x 2 factorial pattern with 8 replications. The first factor was the flushing feed (FF) type, consisting of rice bran and concentrate, whereas the second factor was the level of tannin-protected arginine (TPA: 0 and 300 mg/kg). The body morphometrics observed in this study were initial body length (IBL), final body length (FBL), body length change (BLC), initial chest girth (ICG), final chest girth (FCG), chest girth change (CGC), initial wither height (IWH), final wither height (FWH), and wither height change (WHC). The IBL, FBL, BLC, ICG, FCG, IWH, FWH, and WHC of the local does were not significantly different (P0.05) after receiving the FF type. However, FF significantly affected the CGC of the goats (P0.001). The use of concentrate for the local female local goats resulted in a higher CGC (P0.001) compared to the use of rice bran. On the other hand, TPA did not significantly affect all body morphometrics of the goats (P0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that the use of concentrate leads to higher chest girth change, giving better body growth compared to the use of rice bran. The addition of tannin-protected arginine was also found to have no significant contribution to the body morphometrics of the local female goats. _____________

Abstract

This experiment aimed at determining the effect of doses of urea fertilizer and harvest age on the Dry Matter (DM), Crude Fiber (CF), Crude Protein (CP) and Organic Matter (OM) contents of corn fodder under hydroponic system. The planting experiment employed Factorial Completely Randomized Design (FCRD) with 4 main treatments i.e. P0 (zero levels of urea fertilizer), P1 (0.15 gram urea/L), P2 (0.3 gram urea/L), P3 (0.45 gram urea/L) and 3 sub-treatments i.e. the harvest age of 7 days, 14 days and 21 days. The treatments were replicated 3 times. The variables measured include Dry Matter (DM), Organic Matter (OM), Crude Protein (CP) and Crude Fibre (CF) of the corn fodder. Collected data were subjected to analysis of variance and if significant effects of treatments were identified then Duncan’s Multiple Range Test was employed. It was found that the interaction of the treatments did not significantly affect (P>0.05) all the variables measured. Doses of urea fertilizer only gave a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on CP content whilst harvest age gave highly significant effect (P<0.01) to all variables measured. It can concluded that adding doses of urea gave effect only on CP content of corn fodder under hydroponic system and harvest age gave effect on Dry Matter (DM), Organic Matter (OM), Crude Protein (CP) and Crude Fibre (CF) of the fodder produced. Harvest age of 14 days is suggested as it gave the highest DM, OM and CP content with the lowest CF content.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan EM4 dalam silase pakan lengkap berbasis rumput gajah terhadap pH, kandungan bakteri asam laktat dan produksi gas secara in vitro. Materi yang digunakan adalah rumput gajah (Pennisetum purpureum), kaliandra (Calliandra calothyrsus), konsentrat dan EM4. Metode penelitian yang digunakan ialah metode percobaan dengan Rancangan Acak Lengkap untuk pH dan kandungan bakteri asam laktat dan Rancangan Acak Kelompok untuk produksi gas yang terdiri dari empat perlakuan dan empat ulangan. Perlakuannya adalah tanpa penambahan EM4 (P0), penambahan EM4 sebanyak 4% (P1), penambahan EM4 sebanyak 6% (P2) dan penambahan EM4 sebanyak 8% (P3). Variabel yang diamati dalam penelitian meliputi pH, kandungan bakteri asam laktat dan produksi gas. Data yang diperoleh di Analisa menggunakan analisis ragam (ANOVA) dan dilanjutkan dengan Uji Jarak Berganda Duncan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, penambahan EM4 memberikan pengaruh yang sangat nyata (P<0,01) terhadap nilai pH, pada perlakuan P0, P1, P2 dan P3 berturut-turut adalah (4,88 ± 0,12), (4,53± 0,08), (4,48 ± 0,08) dan (4,23 ± 0,09%) namun tidak berpengaruh nyata (P>0,05) terhadap kandungan bakteri asam laktat. Pada uji produksi gas, perlakuan memberikan perlakuan yang nyata (P<0,05) dengan rataan P0, P1, P2 dan P3 secara berturut-turut adalah (103,1813 ± 6,61 ml/500 mg), (99,1406 ± 10,50 ml/500 mg BK), (82,5061 ± 1,02 ml/500 mg BK) dan (89,7349 ± 1,35 ml/500 mg BK). Disimpulkan bahwa penambahan EM4 berpengaruh terhadap nilai pH dan produksi gas secara in vitro, serta tidak memberikan pengaruh terhadap kandungan bakteri asam laktat silase pakan lengkap berbasis rumput gajah. Disarankan untuk penggunaan EM4 4% cfu/ml dalam pembuatan silase rumput gajah, kaliandra dan konsentrat sebagai pakan lengkap untuk sapi perah, karena dengan konsentrasi tersebut menunjukkan hasil yang terbaik.
