Abstract

Coastal ecosystems, specifically mangrove trees, safeguard coastal regions against natural disasters like erosion, floods, and tsunamis. Numerical simulations employing the Shallow Water Equation (SWE), encompassing mass and momentum conservation equations, are used to comprehend how mangroves attenuate wave energy. The SWE incorporates Manning's friction term, which is directly influenced by mangrove forests. However, the SWE's complexity and sensitivity to initial conditions hinder analytical solutions. Despite its increasing computational demands, we utilize the robust staggered grid method to address this challenge. Our study examines mangroves' wave-attenuating effects and introduces a parallel computational model using OpenMP to expedite computations. Findings reveal that mangroves can reduce wave amplitudes by up to 33% when employing a Manning's coefficient of 0.3 within confined basin simulations. Furthermore, our parallel computing experiments demonstrate substantial computation speed enhancements; the speedup improves up to a point, with a notable 7.26-fold acceleration observed when utilizing eight threads compared to a single line. Moreover, more than a 10-fold acceleration is observed when the number of threads is greater than 16. This underscores the significance of parallelization in exploring mangrove contributions to coastal protection.

Abstract

Eretan Beach is one of the beaches in Indramayu and has a reasonably severe abrasion rate from year to year. The Eretan coastline always experiences significant changes due to erosion every year. Therefore, it is necessary to study changes in the coastline at Eretan beach. This study obtained coastline data from the Google Earth engine using CoastSat, a python-based open-source toolkit, from 1992 – 2022. The open-source geographic information system software used to process the data is the Quantum Geographic Information System. This study aims to analyze the Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) algorithm in predicting shoreline changes at Eretan Beach. The eight optimizer functions in the LSTM are used with nine different scenarios to analyze the algorithm's performance. The results of this study show that RMSProp has the best performance compared to other optimizers. The RMSE and MAPE values on the RMSProp are 35.06258 and 2.2923 on the training data and 9.2457 and 1.06786 on the test data. In addition, from the predictions for the next ten years at transect point 251, it was found that there would be an increase in the coastline.

Abstract

COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which results in a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, and can lead to fatalities. As of October 2023, WHO has recorded 771 cases of COVID-19 globally. Various efforts have been made to control the spread of the virus, including vaccination, isolation measures, and intensive medical care. The emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants has led to the ongoing evolution of virus transmission. Continued research is essential to understand this virus and develop strategies to address the pandemic. Inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 play a crucial role in the vaccine development process. Inhibitors can impede the virus's development, helping reduce disease severity and control the pandemic. The classification of inhibitors is expected to serve as a foundation for selecting compounds that can be developed into vaccines. This research develops a Graph Neural Network model for inhibitor classification and uses the random search method for hyperparameter tuning. Graph Neural Networks are chosen due to their excellent performance in modelling graph data. This study demonstrates the success of hyperparameter tuning in improving the performance of the Graph Neural Network for accurate classification of SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Airplane accidents still occur frequently, one of which is caused by turbulence. To minimize the risk, an effective forecasting system is needed. This research focuses on developing a web-based dashboard for aircraft turbulence mitigation by considering factors such as convective cloud growth, Richardson number index, and wind shear. The dashboard was developed through four steps: requirement analysis, design, implementation, and verification. The Richardson number index (Ri) is calculated using a formula involving temperature and wind speed at different geopotential heights. Alert status is determined based on Ri values and other parameters, with three alert levels: 'Alert 1', 'Alert 2' and 'Alert 3'. The system provides alerts based on user input. If the cloud cover is less than 50%, the “Alert 1” status is displayed; if Ri < 0.25, the “Alert 2” status appears; and if the wind shear exceeds the threshold, the “Alert 3” status indicates that flights are prohibited. Pilot tests show that the system works well and the Ri calculation results are comparable to existing Richardson calculators. The dashboard allows users to access critical information related to turbulence and flight status in real-time, thereby improving flight safety. Timely alerts help in flight-related decision making. This research successfully developed a web-based dashboard for aircraft turbulence mitigation that works well. By monitoring convective cloud growth, Richardson number index, and wind shear, the system is able to provide relevant alerts to improve flight safety.
