Abstract

This research investigates the formation process of the blends, the classification, and identify the semantic changes in the names of the BBC UK children’s programs. The methods used in this research are descriptive qualitative, and quantitative. To analyze the formation and classification of the blends, the writer used the theory proposed by Elisa Mattiello. The result shows that morphotactically, the blends are categorized into total and partial blends. Morphonologically, the blends are classified into overlapping and non-overlapping blends. Morphosemantically, the attributive blends are more frequently used than the coordinative blends. Furthermore, there are some semantic changes found in the attributive blends.

Abstract

The community service program conducted by the English Study Program  held from April to July, 2019 was the fourth in a series of activities in cooperation with Balai Budaya Minomartani and the community radio station, Balai Budaya Minomartani FM 107.7 MHz. It aims to increase the community capacity by training high school students living in Minomartani and its vicinity to become broadcasters of an educational entertainment radio program. In this program, Indonesian folktales in English translation are used as a medium for teaching English through storytelling. In achieving the aim, a two day workshop on radio broadcasting was held at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The resource persons presenting in the workshop are community radio practitioners from the community radio station and lecturers from the English Study Program, Universitas Gadjah Mada. In the workshop, participants learned how to operate audio mixer, tell stories and present material on the radio. The participants were also provided with a module to help them identify language items to teach and select, modify, and convert the folk tales into audio scripts. Under the guidance and supervision of tutors from the English Study Program, the participants selected the language items in the folktales and developed them into teaching materials, made audio scripts and presented them. The participants were recorded reading their scripts. The audio recording was then broadcasted by the community radio station, Balai Budaya Minomartani FM 107.7 MHz. As the community radio is internet-based, the broadcast could be heard world wide. In this way, Indonesian folktales are also promoted to the world.--------------------------------------------------------------Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang dilaksanakan Prodi Sastra Inggris sejak April–Juli 2019 bekerja sama dengan Balai Budaya Minomartani dan Radio Komunitas Balai Budaya Minomartani FM 107.7 MHz, merupakan yang keempat kalinya dalam serangkaian kegiatan kerjasama. Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan mengembangkan kapasitas masyarakat dengan melatih siswa SMA/SMK yang tinggal di Minomartani dan sekitarnya untuk menjadi penyiar program pendidikan dan hiburan. Dalam program ini, cerita rakyat Indonesia yang telah diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan memakai metode storytelling. Untuk mencapai tujuannya, Prodi Sastra Inggris menyelenggarakan workshop yang berlangsung selama dua hari di Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Para narasumber merupakan praktisi radio komunitas dan dosen dosen Prodi Sastra Inggris, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Para peserta workshop diajarkan bagaimana mengoperasikan audiomixer, bercerita dan menyiarkan materi. Di samping itu, para peserta diberikan modul untuk membantu mereka dalam mengidentifikasi butir bahasa yang akan diajarkan, memilih, memodifikasi dan mengubah cerita rakyat menjadi audio script. Di bawah bimbingan tutor dari Prodi Sastra Inggris, peserta memilih unsur bahasa yang terdapat dalam cerita rakyat dan mengembangkannya menjadi bahan ajar, membuat audio script, membacakannya sambil direkam untuk kemudian disiarkan di radio komunitas Balai Budaya Minomartani FM 107.7 MHz. Karena radio komunitas BBM sudah berbasis internet, siaran ini dapat didengarkan di seluruh dunia sehingga menjadi sarana promosi cerita rakyat Indonesia.

Abstract

The present study discusses the patterns of blends found in the data collected which are food and beverage names found in Instagram and describe the possible new meaning of the blends. The researcher uses Mattiello’s classification of blends as the approach to analyze the data. From the findings, there are fiftythree data that can be considered as blends. The data are classified into three perspectives: the first is morphotactic, the second is morphonological (and graphic), and the third is morphosemantic. The result shows that morphotactically the most productive pattern of the blends is total blend more specifically the blend which the beginning of the first source word is followed by the end of the second source word with 19 data or 34.5 percent. Second, Morphonologically and orthographically, the most productive blend is non-overlapping blends with 31 data or 58.5 percent. Last, morphosemantically, the coordinate blend is more frequent than attributive blends with 30 data or 56.6 percent.

Abstract

This study examines compound words and their semantic relations and interprets the meanings of the newly coined compound words found in National Geographic magazine’s January to June 2019 issues. This study uses qualitative methods to analyze the data. It classifies compound words using Delahunty & Garvey’s theory (2010) into five types: compound noun (CN), compound verb (CV), compound adjective (CAdj), compound adverb (CAv), and neoclassical compound (NCC). It also analyzes the semantic relations of compound words. The results of the study show that 241 compound words were found. The most common type of compound words was compound nouns (59.75%), followed by neoclassical compounds (18.67%), compound adjectives (15.35%), compound verbs (4.98%), and the least common type is compound adverbs (1.24%). The study also shows that 70.54% of the compound words found belong to endocentric compounds, and the remaining 29.46% to exocentric compounds. In addition, six newly coined and theme-related compound words were found. The meanings of these newly coined compound words are not available in referenced dictionaries.

Abstract

The Community Service Team of the English Studies Programme, Universitas Gadjah Mada, organised a programme at SMA 5 Purworejo, with the theme ‘Developing Speaking Skills through Storytelling.’ This programme was designed in response to a request from the teachers and the Principal of the SMAN 5 Purworejo, who considered that the students urgently need assistance in improving the students' English-speaking proficiency. This year's programme was conducted using a hybrid approach (online and offline). The programme focused on using folklore as a means to develop students’ speaking competence. As an initial step, the team provided the students with theoretical frameworks on language features, particularly those pertaining to English speaking skills. In the subsequent phase, the team assisted the students in applying the previously discussed language theories in two tutorial sessions. The students enthusiastically and actively participated in the tutoring sessions. They succeeded in applying the theories introduced to them. After that, the students were evaluated based on their performance. All evaluation components indicated that the students achieved above-average scores. === Tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) Prodi Sastra Inggris Universitas Gadjah Mada telah menyelenggarakan program di SMA Negeri 5 Purworejo, dengan tema ‘Mengembangkan Keterampilan Berbicara Melalui Storytelling.’ Program ini dirancang untuk menjawab permintaan dari para guru dan kepala sekolah SMA Negeri 5 Purworejo, yang menilai bahwa siswa mereka sangat membutuhkan bantuan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris. Program tahun ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan bauran (daring dan luring) yang berfokus pada penggunaan cerita rakyat sebagai sarana untuk mengembangkan kompetensi berbicara siswa. Sebagai langkah awal, tim membekali para siswa dengan kerangka teori tentang fitur kebahasaan, terutama yang berkaitan dengan keterampilan berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris. Pada tahap selanjutnya, tim PkM mendampingi siswa dalam menerapkan teori-teori bahasa yang telah dibahas sebelumnya dalam dua sesi tutorial. Para siswa sangat antusias dan aktif berpartisipasi dalam sesi bimbingan. Mereka berhasil menerapkan teori-teori yang diperkenalkan kepada mereka. Setelah itu, siswa dievaluasi berdasarkan kinerja mereka. Semua komponen evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa siswa mencapai nilai di atas rata-rata.

Abstract

Globalization demands wider use of foreign languages, especially English, on brand names, even for local products. This research aimed to understand how Indonesians perceived the use of English when naming local products and whether there was a feeling of being dominated. It contributes to the study of public perception of foreign languages on brand names. The study used two online surveys to examine perceptions of the brand naming practice, including its formations, meanings, and potential purposes. The first survey aims to select the 15 most familiar brand names out of 30 data points. The second survey, consisting of seven 5-scale Likert items and two open-ended questions, aims to measure the participants' perceptions of the 15 brands. The Likert items generated a mean of 72.08%, indicating that most respondents agree with the statement in each item. The structural equation modeling result shows that English skills have a significant and positive direct impact on perception at .16 (p < .01, 1-tailed), while age shows a negative direct impact at -.27 (p < .01, 1-tailed). Education, on the other hand, has a significant indirect effect on perception (p < .05, 1-tailed) as it affects English skills at .18 (p< .01, 1-tailed). Instead of feeling dominated, the respondents felt that using English is a negotiation to employ English as a creative tool for commercial purposes without losing the sense of nationalism for not using Bahasa Indonesia in the brand names.

Abstract

By taking into account the COVID-19 pandemic situation, which has a very significant impact on the education, economy, and tourism sectors, the Community Service Team of the English Studies Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada designed a series of training programs on feature writing focusing on the theme of Ponorogo unique culinary. The series of activities carried out in a blended learning method (online and offline) were intended for Class X students of SMAN I Babadan, Ponorogo, East Java. The activities were designed to improve the students’ writing and soft-skills, and to promote Ponorogo culinary tourism by applying a narrative-based tourism approach or creative content, which is also known as storynomic tourism. The team facilitated a series of training sessions on writing popular articles, assisted the students in conducting direct observations and interviews with the local culinary entrepreneurs, and assisted them in writing interesting features in either Indonesian or English. The output of the activity is a book entitled “Kumpulan Ulasan Kuliner Khas Ponorogo, Jawa Timur” published by the English Studies Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. ==== Dengan memperhatikan situasi pandemi COVID-19 yang berdampak sangat signifikan pada sektor pendidikan, ekonomi, dan pariwisata, Tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) Prodi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Gadjah Mada merancang sebuah program pelatihan dan pendampingan penulisan feature yang mengangkat tema kuliner khas Ponorogo. Rangkaian kegiatan yang dilakukan secara bauran (daring dan luring) ini ditujukan untuk siswa- siswa Kelas X SMAN I Babadan, Ponorogo, Jawa Timur. Kegiatan ini bertujuan meningkatkan keterampilan menulis dan softskills para siswa serta mempromosikan wisata kuliner Ponorogo dengan menerapkan pendekatan pariwisata yang berbasis narasi atau konten kreatif yang dewasa ini juga dikenal dengan storynomic tourism. Tim PkM memfasilitasi pelatihan penulisan artikel populer, mendampingi siswa-siswa melakukan observasi dan wawancara langsung kepada para pelaku usaha kuliner lokal Ponorogo, serta mendampingi proses penulisan feature yang menarik dalam bahasa Indonesia atau Inggris. Luaran dari kegiatan PkM ini adalah sebuah buku berjudul “Kumpulan Ulasan Kuliner Khas Ponorogo, Jawa Timur” yang diterbitkan oleh Prodi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Gadjah Mada.
