Abstract

The 21st century learning system demands the use of technology in learning instruction. This research focuses on the comparison between the use of android-based-game and blended learning in the Chemistry subject on the hydrocarbon lesson toward students’ self-efficacy and achievement. A quasi-experiment with post-test only design was adopted in this research. A number of 143 eleventh graders from two public senior high schools in Purworejo Regency, Indonesia were selected in a cluster random sampling as the research sample. The sample was classified into three groups depending on the media used, i.e. android-based-game only on face-to-face learning (ABG-FTFL), blended learning only (BL), and both android-based-game and blended learning (ABG-BL). Self-Efficacy Scale (SES) was used to obtain the data of students’ self-efficacy while the hydrocarbon test was used to obtain students’ achievement. One-way Analysis of Variance, Kruskal Wallis test, and descriptive quantity technique were performed in the data analysis, and it is found that the use of these technologies has a significant effect on the students’ self-efficacy and achievement. The use of ABG-BL is better in improving students’ self-efficacy while BL is better in enhancing students’ achievement. Therefore, the use of android-based-game and blended learning can be emphasized as media in chemistry learning to gain better self-efficacy and achievement among students.

Abstract

Problem-solving skill is an important component in achieving a successful 21st-century learning system. This research aimed to explore Pre-service Chemistry Teacher’ (PsCT’) problem-solving skill after CBL (Context-based learning) implementation with vocational case on petroleum and polymer topic of chemistry. A descriptive study on the CBL implementation was adopted in this research. The study focused on the exploration of PsCT’ problem-solving skill. Through convenient sampling technique, the sample covered a total of 34 PsCT (10 males and 24 females) who enrolled in vocational chemistry course were selected in this study. The data of PsCT’ problem-solving skill were collected through Rubric for Problem-solving skill (RPSS). There were four aspects of problem-solving skill used in this research, namely problems identification skills, information collection skills, skills to provide possible solution, and skills of communicating the possible solution. These data were analysed according to descriptive quantity and one-way ANOVA technique. Three open-ended questions were used to explore PsCT’s view about the relevance, usefulness, and effectiveness of the CBL implementation. There was a significant difference on PsCT’ problems solving skills among petroleum and polymer topic.  The result of this study indicated that PsCT’ problem-solving skill still in sufficient category. Hence, these skills should be improved especially on the skills to analyse the problem comprehensively and make an appropriate conclusion. The PsCT have positive view toward CBL implementation about the relevance, usefulness, and effectiveness. The implementation of CBL with vocational case is promising since it could improve PsCT’ problem-solving skills.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the chemistry teacher knowledge related STEM integration in chemistry learning at automotive engineering programme of vocational school This research belonged to descriptive study with survey methods. The samples consisted of 19 ChTAE at automotive vocational school in Bantul Regency, Indonesia that were established through saturated sampling technique. The preceding knowledge about the IC-STEM learning integration of ChTAE were achieved by using STEM Knowledge Questionnaire (STEM-KQ) consisting of 9 opened questions. The responses of ChTAE toward STEM-KQ were analysed using question-by-question with interpretative coding of content analysis. The results of this research indicate that the ChTAE have good knowledge in defining and explaining STEM which in line with chemistry subject. However, their skills in designing and implementing CI-STEM still need to be enhanced. As the matter of that, the ChTAE must follow the activities relating with the preparation of CI-STEM. Therefore, the ChTAE could implement a meaningful chemistry subject in line with automotive expertise programme at vocational school.

Abstract

Learning activities always develop following the needs of the times. Some skills, such as critical thinking, need to be possessed by 21st-century individuals. This study aims to analyze critical thinking skills of students who learn collaboratively based on the Science, Technology, Society, and Environment (STSE) learning approach. A posttest nonequivalent control group design was adopted in this research. Through cluster random sampling, 68 students at one public senior high school in Sleman Yogyakarta, participated as a research sample, which divided into 2 classes. Students in experimental class (N=35) has been learn about electrolyte nonelectrolyte topic through collaborative learning based STSE approach. While, the other students in the control class (N=34), taught by student center learning. In the fifth meetings, students’ critical thinking skill was measured as a research data through an essay questions instruments that has been empirically validated. Afterwards, research data were analyzed using independent sample t-test. Moreover, the p-value shown in the analysis results was 0.009. This result is sufficient to indicate that at the 95% confidence level there is a significant difference in students' critical thinking skill between the experimental class and the control class. The partial eta squared value shows that STSE learning approach has an effect to fostering students’ critical thinking in learning chemistry, in this research there was 9.8% effect that can be highlighted.

Abstract

The movement of educational systems on the 21st century need to be change from linearity to systemic form. The aims of this research is to determine the effect of Chemistry Systemic Learning Approach (CSLA) toward Students’ Analytical Thinking Skills (SATS). A pre-experimental with pre-test and post-test design was adopted in this research. The population of this study were all of the students of public senior high school in Kulon Progo regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Two classes from a public senior high school in those regency were cluster randomly selected as the research samples. A Systemic Test on Analytical Thinking (STAT) was used to collect the data of SATS, before and after the implementation of CSLA. The STAT covering four indicators of analytical thinking, they are differentiating, organizing, and attributing indicators. Meanwhile, the CSLA was integrated in the teaching-learning process and in the STAT, the CSLA was presented in the form of cyclic diagrams. The data of SATS on CSLA were analyse according to paired samples t-test and n-gain category analysis. The results of these analysis indicates that there was significant effect of CSLA on SATS. Moreover, the profile of SATS shows a satisfied improvement after the implementation of CSLA. Overall, a high n-gain category was reached that indicates the enhancement of students’ understanding of the inter-related concept in chemistry. This study gives a significant contribution on the use of CSLA to improve SATS. Hence, the used of CSLA should be emphasized on chemistry learning to promote students’ higher order thinking skills.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat (PPM) bertujuan untuk: (1) meningkatkan pengetahuan masyarakat Seyegan tentang bahan dan manfaat sabun scrub alami dari ampas kopi, (2) meningkatkan ketrampilan masyarakat dalam pemanfaatan teknologi tepat guna pembuatan sabun scrub alami dari ampas kopi, dan (3) memotivasi minat wirausaha masyarakat Seyegan. Kegiatan PPM ini bersifat pelatihan dan dilaksanakan dengan metode ceramah, diskusi dan praktik. Melalui kegiatan tersebut, peserta telah mendapat materi tentang: (1) pembuatan sabun scrub alami dari ampas kopi, (2) kandungan dan manfaat kopi untuk kesehatan kulit, (3) sabun yang aman untuk kesehatan kulit, (4) peluang wirausaha sabun kopi, dan (5) pewarna dan pewangi yang bersifat skin grade. Peserta yang telah mengikuti pelatihan ini berjumlah 11 orang yang merupakan masyarakat di daerah Padukuhan Kamal Wetan, Mangsel VII, Margomulyo, Seyegan. Evaluasi kegiatan PPM dilakukan dalam 2 tahapan, yaitu evaluasi proses melalui observasi selama kegiatan PPM dan evaluasi hasil melalui produk sabun yang dihasilkan serta isian angket kegiatan PPM. Melalui kegiatan ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa peserta pelatihan telah memperoleh (1) manfaat tentang bahan dan sabun alami dari ampas kopi, (2) pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam pemanfaatan teknologi tepat guna pembuatan sabun scrub alami dari ampas kopi, namun motivasi dan minat wirausaha peserta pelatihan untuk membuat sabun scrub ampas kopi masih perlu untuk ditingkatkan.

Abstract

Tujuan Penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan kemampuan berpikir analitis dan prestasi belajar kimia peserta didik kelas XI Semester II SMA Negeri 1 Pengasih Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 sebelum dan sesudah mengikuti proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan pendekatan sistemik, dan hubungan antara kemampuan berpikir analitis dengan prestasi belajar kimia peserta didik tersebut sesudah mengikuti proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan pendekatan sistemik.Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pre experimental design. Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah seluruh peserta didik kelas XI IPA SMA Negeri 1 Pengasih yang terbagi menjadi lima kelas. Sampel yang digunakan berjumlah dua kelas yaitu kelas XI IPA 1 dan XI IPA 3. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan secara purposive sampling. Pengujian hipotesis dilakukan dengan uji T dan analisis korelasi.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (a) terdapat perbedaan kemampuan berpikir analitis dan prestasi belajar kimia peserta didik kelas XI Semester II SMA Negeri 1 Pengasih Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 sebelum dan sesudah mengikuti proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan pendekatan sistemik, (b) kemampuan berpikir analitis berhubungan dengan peningkatan prestasi belajar kimia peserta didik tersebut sesudah mengikuti proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan pendekatan sistemik dengan nilai korelasi sebesar 0,484.
