Abstract

The current study aimed at justifying that updating or upgrading the mastery on discourse markers (DMs) could improve the students’ reading skills. It is arguably true that DMs do facilitate readers to comprehend texts in terms of the logical and grammatical relation. Therefore, an action research involving 21 students randomly selected as the subjects of the study were conducted in Reading Classes. Pre-test, Post-test 1 and Post-test 2 were administered to generate the data consisting of the progress of their reading skills. Theoretical insights on DMs (function and uses) were also highlighted including the teaching procedures to support the findings of the classroom action research. It turns out that despite the fact that there are 4 types of DMs, only three of them were mostly used in the reading texts, namely contrastive, elaborative and inferential markers. Updating or upgrading DMs proves effective to improve the students’ reading skills as there were increases in scores to indicate improvements. Key words: discourse markers, action research, reading skills

Abstract

Abstract

YouTube has been flooded with contents within a movie genre, mostly the products by junior creators. It is therefore important to appreciate their works to maintain their creativities and innovations. Positive responses to such literary works are also required to improve their quality writing. The current study was aimed at identifying and at the same time construing the implicatures found in each act of the movie entitled “Terlanjur Mencinta” directed by Alfatah Nando. George Yule’s pragmatic theory (1996) was used in relation to implicatures caused by conversational maxims (Grice, 1975) supported by linguistic evidence-based contextual interpretation, namely utterances and stage directions. Findings show that generalized conversational implicatures were identified, namely 12 implicatures in which 42% was due to violation of manner maxim, 33% attributed to that of relation maxim, 17% due to that of quantity maxim, and 8% due to that of quality maxim. In addition, 4 conventional implicatures were found in the monologue. The study concludes that the implicatures can be easily understood through the contexts of situations. It is recommended that future researchers can formulate the ideal proportion and distribution of implicatures in a particular text in terms of quality, employing comparative rhetoric and a special research instrument.

Abstract

The current study reports Year One of a Two-Year Research Project on manifestation of Islamic values and local wisdoms to anticipate Society 5.0. A survey questionnaire was administered to 39 subjects consisting of students of Sultan Agung Islamic University Semarang enrolled in Basic Culture Course in order to grasp their profiles in terms of S (Strength) W (Weakness) O (Opportunity) and T (Threat) with respect to Islamic values and local wisdoms. It turns out that all students show their strength, namely being aware of the Islamic values and local wisdoms positively contributing to the success of the future career as soft skills. However, their weakness is that they master knowledge of Islamic values and local wisdoms only at cognitive level. In practice rules are violated. Opportunity is open for them since they are still at college with rooms for advancement and improvement. Meanwhile, the threat is that they may be influenced by the negative impact of cyber information providers within disruption of digital manufacture unless it is anticipated by equipping them with manifestation of Islamic values and local wisdoms to successfully survive in Society 5.0 in which people shall govern technology and not otherwise. Keywords: Islamic values, local wisdoms, soft skills, society 5.0, digital manufacture

Abstract

Studies about rhetorical moves in the introduction section have been widely conducted. However, the studies focusing on the research problem statement is still limited. This current study investigated the rhetorical structures, strategies, and linguistic features of the problem statement written by undergraduate students, which aimed to contribute to the teaching model in teaching academic writing. This research was a qualitative case study belonging to genre analysis, using Swale’s CARS model. Thirty undergraduate students’ problem statement texts were explored, and interviewers were further conducted to collect the data. The results indicated that nine types of rhetorical structures were employed, most of which were characterized as incomplete. The rhetorical strategies employed by the students were making a centrality claim, making topic generalizations, reviewing previous research, indicating a gap, establishing need and problem, continuing a tradition, outlining purposes, and announcing the state of the present research. Specific linguistic features were used in each move and step although the students admitted that they had lack of knowledge with linguistic features. Based on the research finding, a Critical Genre-Based model for teaching problem statements in writing is proposed because this model has facilitative effect on consciousness-raising of the genre’s rhetorical structure.
