Abstract

Background: Many breastfeeding mothers find that their milk production decreases or even stops when they return to work due to reduced breastfeeding hormones. Massage can stimulate the oxytocin hormone, and to replace the manual massage, a digital massager of oxytocin (DMO) is developed.Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effects of the DMO on the milk production of the breastfeeding working mothers. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experiment with pretest-posttest control group design. The samples were 93 breastfeeding working mothers in the community with a baby below 6 months. The samples were assigned into the intervention group (n=46) and the control group (n=47). An intervention of using the DMO was given to the mothers in the intervention group by applying the electrodes on the first intercostae of BL-17 and Bl-18 acupoints for 20 minutes in 3 consecutive days. Meanwhile, a standard treatment was given to the control group. Breast milk expression was carried out before and after the use of DMO. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney and the Wilcoxon tests. Results: The results showed that there were differences in the volume of the expressed breast milk before and after the use of the DMO (p=0.00). The mothers in the intervention group increased their milk production on an average of 23 ml when other variables affecting the breastfeeding were controlled. Conclusion: The DMO stimulated and increased the milk production of working mothers. It can also be an alternative to the complementary therapy, especially for the nursing care management of breastfeeding mothers.

Abstract

This paper aims to tune the Kalman filter (KF) input variables, namely measurement error and process noise, based on two-level factorial design. Kalman filter then was applied in inexpensive temperature-acquisition utilizing MAX6675 and K-type thermocouple with Arduino as its microprocessor. Two levels for each input variable, respectively, 0.1 and 0.9, were selected and applied to four K-type thermocouples mounted on MAX6675. Each sensor with a different combination of input variables was used to measure the temperature of ambient-water, boiling water, and sudden temperature drops in the system. The measurement results which consisted of the original and KF readings were evaluated to determine the optimum combination of input variables. It was found that the optimum combination of input variables was highly dependent on the system's dynamics. For systems with relatively constant dynamics, a large value of measurement error and small value of process noise results in higher precision readings. Nevertheless, for fast dynamic systems, the previous input variables' combination is less optimal because it produced a time-gap, which made the KF reading differ from the original measurement. The selection of the optimum input combination using two-level factorial design eased the KF tuning process, resulting in a more precise yet low-cost sensor.

Abstract

The basic concept of thermal management is to control the excess heat during an accident. The understanding and investigation of boiling phenomenon become important research stage. Quenching process is the process of sudden cooling on a hot object by entering into a fluid. SS316 material with hollow cylinder geometry in a vertical position is the simulation of debris and used as a heated object. Method of quenching experiments carried out through the natural cooling of the hollow cylinder with different variations of initial temperature from 300 oC to 800 oC and submerged into the water with saturation temperature. Temperature data was recorded and boiling was captured using highspeed camera (HSC) during the experiment. The results of transient temperature data was used to calculate the heat flux. The film boiling regime on TC8 (outer portion) in the boiling curves for all initial temperatures have a good agreement with Bromley’s correlation. The shortest process of film boiling was occurred for 1.11 seconds at the initial temperature of 300oC. Critical heat flux at TC8 from initial temperature of 800 oC, 600 oC, 400 oC and 300 oC in respectively is 700 kW/m2, 500 kW/m2, 450 kW/m2 and 400 kW/m2. Keywords: quenching, cylinder, boiling, heat flux

Abstract

Potency of Thermoelectric Generator for Hybrid Vehicle. Thermoelectric Generator (TEG) has been known as electricity generation for many years. If the temperature difference occurred between two difference semi conductor materials, the current will flow in the material and produced difference voltage. This principle is known as Seebeck effect that is the opposite of Peltier effect Thermoelectric Cooling (TEC). This research was conducted to test the potential of electric source from twelve peltier modules. Then, these thermoelectric generators were applied in hybrid car by using waste heat from the combustion engine. The experiment has been conducted with variations of peltier module arrangements (series and parallels) and heater as heat source for the thermoelectric generator, with variations of heater voltage input (110V and 220V) applied. The experimental result showed that twelve of peltier modules arranged in series and heater voltage of 220V generated power output of 8.11 Watts with average temperature difference of 42.82°C. This result shows that TEG has a bright prospect as alternative electric source.

Abstract

Background Neonatal jaundice is a prevalent condition in newborns, characterized by elevated bilirubin levels. Conventional phototherapy treatments for neonatal jaundice typically require hospital admission, separation from mothers, and may interfere with breastfeeding and bonding. The Blue Light Universitas Indonesia (BLUI) LED phototherapy blanket was developed to address these limitations by providing a portable, home-based alternative that maintains mother-infant contact while delivering effective therapy. Objective To evaluate the efficacy of the Blue Light Universitas Indonesia (BLUI) LED phototherapy blanket in reducing bilirubin levels in infants with physiological jaundice. Methods A preliminary study was conducted from December 2022 to February 2023, involved 14 infants with physiological jaundice at Hermina Hospital Ciputat, Sariasih Hospital Ciputat, and the General Hospital of South Tangerang. The inclusion criteria were infants with physiological jaundice, gestational age ≥35 weeks, and birth weight ≥2,000 grams. The dependent variable was the reduction in total serum bilirubin levels, assessed by spectrophotometry. Paired sample T-test was used to compare bilirubin levels before and 24 hours after intervention with the BLUI Blanket. Results The study included 14 infants, with a mean age of 6.86 days and mean gestational age of 37.71 weeks. The BLUI Blanket demonstrated a mean bilirubin reduction of 3.11 mg/dL after 24 hours of continuous treatment, with a 19.02% decrease. The intervention was well-tolerated, with minimal adverse effects, such as maculopapular skin rash occurring in only one infant. Conclusion The BLUI Blanket is an effective and safe phototherapy device for reducing bilirubin levels in infants with physiological jaundice. This preliminary study supports further research to confirm these findings in larger populations.

Abstract

Background: Patient safety is a fundamental aspect of healthcare in hospital settings; however, implementing it remains challenging in nursing practice due to factors such as inadequate staffing, heavy workloads, poor communication, and limited resources. While previous studies have primarily focused on these structural and organizational barriers, there is limited understanding of nurses’ experiences in implementing patient safety programs, particularly in inpatient settings.Purpose: This study aimed to explore nurses’ experiences in implementing patient safety programs in hospital inpatient settings. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted among 22 ward nurses selected using purposive sampling. The inclusion criteria were nurses with at least one year of work experience and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing or equivalent professional nursing qualifications. Data were collected through focus group discussions (FGDs) and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Four main themes were identified: (1) understanding patient safety principles, (2) barriers to patient safety implementation, (3) leadership and organizational support for patient safety, and (4) technology as a facilitator of patient safety. Although nurses demonstrated an understanding of patient safety principles, they continued to encounter barriers, including variations in peer awareness of safety standards, workload constraints, and a blame culture. Furthermore, nurses reported anxiety and demotivation when reporting errors, highlighting the need for stronger leadership and organizational support. Finally, participants emphasized technology’s role as a key facilitator in achieving patient safety goals. Conclusion: Nurses’ commitment, patient safety–related workplace culture, and the availability of innovative technology remain critical factors influencing the implementation of patient safety programs. Communication barriers, limited managerial support, and challenges in sustaining patient safety practices persist. Therefore, hospital leadership should strengthen systems and policies, improve resource planning, enhance support and supervision, and provide continuous training to improve patient safety programs.

Abstract

Oxygen concentrators are vital devices in medical oxygen therapy. It provides supplemental oxygen, extracted from the environmental air, to patients suffering from hypoxemia or other clinical conditions characterized by low blood oxygen saturation. The need for oxygen therapy extends across various patient populations, including adults, children, and neonates, especially premature infants. However, commercially available concentrators are usually designed for adults, making them unsuitable for premature infants whose delicate, underdeveloped organs can be harmed by high oxygen levels. Meanwhile, field observations from the Indonesian Incubator Team indicate frequent demand for supplemental oxygen following hospital discharge. To meet the urgent need for a suitable device, especially for premature infants discharged from hospitals, this study describes the design and development of a compact, portable, and neonatal-specific oxygen concentrator. A reverse engineering approach was adopted through a three-phase prototyping process. The first prototype verified the feasibility of the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) principle as the main process of the oxygen concentrator. The second prototype integrated a complete system to evaluate performance by measuring flow rate and oxygen concentration and adjusting components to achieve optimal results. The final, third prototype refined the design to improve compactness and portability. The device achieved an oxygen concentration of about 40% oxygen purity with a steady flow rate of 2 L/min. This developed oxygen concentrator presents a significant step forward in neonatal care, providing a tailored and accessible solution that can support widespread use in home-based infant healthcare programs.
