Abstract

In the Japanese literature, poetry has its own type and form, including Haiku and Senryu with 5-7-5 syllabic structure. Another prominent characteristic of Haiku is the topic concerning beauty of nature and the elements like Kigo or Kisetsu no Kotoba (the words marking the seasons) in which it shows the closeness of Japanese people with nature. Senryu has humorous and witty elements, including satire and the story about people; it does not describe season at all. Therefore, cultural background and social condition of society will affect content and form of the satire. This research aims to analyze the form of kigo in haiku and the content of satire in senryu, written by students of Japanese Literature in Brawijaya University. This research used qualitative descriptive methodology. The research shows the result that kigo ame and kigo taiyou are the most frequently used forms.  In senryu, the contents of satire are love, student life, and physical depiction.

Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of female subjectivity in relation to war in shojo manga, a genre of Japanese comics targeted mainly at adolescent girls. The examination centers on the depiction of women's perspectives and experiences during war in shojo manga, as well as how these storylines both mirror and contest conventional gender roles. Employing a qualitative methodology and drawing on Helene Cixous' theory of Ecriture feminine, this paper scrutinizes the war-themed shojo manga "Cocoon" created by Kyo Machiko. The examination reveals that the representation of war in the shojo manga adopts a feminine approach, utilizing elements like soap, uniforms, school recollections, and symbolic cocoons. Furthermore, there is a deliberate divergence from traditional masculine narratives evident in the story's exclusion of male characters and the gender fluidity of the character Mayu, which serves as a form of opposition to warfare. Consequently, shojo manga emerges as a platform that amplifies and values the voices of women within a historical and cultural backdrop largely shaped by male viewpoints.

Abstract

This research explores the theoretical aspects of implementing the pragmatic approach in learning speaking skills/kaiwa, as outlined in Minna No Nihongo 1's book. The pragmatic approach is a learning approach to improve students' speaking/kaiwa skills in the classroom, prioritizing contextualized learning of speaking skills. This emphasis on context becomes particularly significant throughout the learning process. By employing this approach, students, including those in secondary schools and universities, can closely simulate practical speaking conditions, both verbally and in written form. The method used is qualitative descriptive with purposive sampling. Therefore, applying the pragmatic approach has proven effective in promoting active learning, significantly improving students' speaking skills inside and outside the classroom. The Japanese language learning process should be designed to meet practical language needs that correspond to real-world situations. By incorporating patterns based on pragmatic studies, learners undergoing Japanese learning experiences will naturally connect with the practical aspects of communication in the language learning process.
