Abstract

A factor that should be considered in the use of alginate impression materials is cross-infection control, therefore the result of alginate mold should be disinfected using a chemical or natural materials, such as sodiumhypochlorite (NaOCl) 1%, and bay leaf boiling water (Eugenia polyantha Wight) 100% before gypsum filling. However, this can lead to changes in the dimensional stability on the result of the mold. The objective of this researchwas to determine the effect of the use of these materials as a disinfectant with flushing and immersing method fordimensional stability of alginate mold result. The type of this study was laboratories experimental with post test onlycontrol group design. Total sample is 24 samples of alginate mold result were devided in to 6 groups: 2 control groupsand 4 treatment groups using the flushing and immersing methods. Data were tabulated and analyzed with TwoWay Analiysis of variance (Anova) technique adjusted for multiple comparisons using Tukey's (HSD) method wasused. The result of the study shows that the immersing method gives more influences to the dimensional stability ofalginate mold result, but use flushing method and both disinfectant materials do not have a significant effect ondimensional changes of alginate mold result.

Abstract

Denture stomatitis is inflammation of the oral mucosa in contact with the denture base caused by the fungus Candida albicans. Denture stomatitis can be prevented by cleaning the dentures either mechanically or chemically. Mangosteen peel extract has been shown to inhibit the growth of C. albicans, but its effectiveness as a denture cleaning agent needs to be improved. One way to increase effectiveness is by combining chemical cleansing and mechanical cleansing through effervescent tablets. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of mangosteen peel extract effervescent tablets as an acrylic denture cleaner against C. albicans. Previously, the effervescent tablets of mangosteen peel extract were made with concentrations of 30% and 60%. Heat cured acrylic resin samples were incubated into a test tube containing C. albicans suspension for 24 hours at 37oC. Furthermore, the samples were immersed in effervescent tablets of mangosteen peel extract for 15 and 30 minutes. The number of C. albicans cells was counted using a spectrophotometer. The results showed that there was a significant reduction in the number of C. albicans cells attached to the plate surface after immersion in 30% and 60% effervescent tablets of mangosteen peel extract (p <0.05). Mangosteen peel extract effervescent tablets 60% more decreased the number of C. albicans cells. The duration of immersion did not show significantly different results (p> 0.05). Effervescent tablets of 60% concentration of mangosteen peel extract soaked for 15 minutes were the most effective as an acrylic resin denture cleaner against C. albicans.

Abstract

Continuous use of dentures can hinder the cleaning process by the tongue and saliva, resulting in denture stomatitis. The main factor that causes denture stomatitis is the presence of Candida albicans. Green tea dregs and rosella tea dregs still contain compounds that have antifungal properties. Based on previous research, it was stated that green tea waste still contained polyphenols, flavonoids, gallic acid, catechins, EGCG, as well as rosella pulp also contained anthocyanins and phenolics. The presence of the following ingredients means that each infusion can reduce the amount of C. albicans growth. This research is a laboratory experimental study with 54 samples divided into 9 groups. The research group consisted of soaking samples of acrylic resin contaminated with C. albicans for 7 hours in the control group (sterile distilled water) and the treatment group, namely steeping green tea dregs with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and rosella tea dregs steeping 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% which were then tested by spectrophotometer to see the absorbance of C. albicans. The data obtained were analyzed by ANOVA showing p0.005 so that the LSD test continued, it could be seen that there were significant differences between each treatment group and the control group, which means that the steeping of green tea dregs and the steeping of rosella tea dregs at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% affected the growth of C. albicans on heat-cured acrylic resin, but between groups of various concentrations of steeping tea dregs did not show a significant effect.

Abstract

Steeping rosella tea and black tea are effective as denture cleaning agents as they contain flavonoids that can inhibit the growth of C. Albicans. Flavonoids in the brewing of rosella tea and black tea are found in pigment compounds, so when the acrylic resin is soaked in the steeping of roselle tea and black tea, it can cause discoloration. This study aims to compare the color changes of acrylic resin soaked in roselle tea and black tea with the same treatment. A total of 18 samples of acrylic resin were divided into three groups; six samples immersed in 20% concentrated roselle tea, six samples immersed in 20% concentration of black tea, and six samples immersed in steeping mineral water for 22 hours 30 minutes at room temperature. The research results' data were analyzed using the one-way Anova test. Acrylic resin soaked in steeping roselle and black tea experienced a color change, and the largest color change occurred in acrylic resin soaked in black tea. The results showed that hot polymerized acrylic resin soaked in black tea had a greater color change than that of acrylic resin soaked in roselle tea.
