Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to understand the impact of multisensory experiences on place attachment, visitors' involvement, and revisit intention of outdoor tourism locations. A quantitative approach was chosen by distributing questionnaires to visitors of outdoor destinations in Yogyakarta and surrounding areas. The PLS-SEM technique was used to statistically analyze data from 418 valid respondents. The results showed that multisensory experiences positively influenced place attachment, visitor involvement, and intention to revisit. In addition, place attachment and visitor involvement were also found to have an impact on revisit intentions. By visiting outdoor destinations such as parks, gardens, mountains, temples, and beaches, visitors expect to find a state of relaxation and happiness, as all five senses receive stimulation from pleasant environments. This study complements previous research and broadens the scope of marketing and tourism research by analyzing multisensory experience variables so that destinations can play a greater role in people's mental health. This study also offers valuable new alternatives for the development of tourism marketing and tourism structuring strategies in the future, especially promoting tourism that cares about mental health.

Abstract

At the end of the 21st century, various community empowerment programs have emerged, focusing on environmental sustainability due to increasing environmental degradation and growing awareness of the need for conservation. Indonesia, as the world's second-largest food waste producer in 2021 according to The Economist Intelligence Unit, faces significant waste management challenges.Environmental issues are also linked to ecofeminism, where women play an active role in environmental preservation to create an eco-friendly and women-friendly society. Therefore, this program aims to support women in waste management, enhancing their awareness and concern for environmental sustainability. Bokoharjo Village, where women make up approximately 50% of the total population, has been chosen as the target location to optimize their creativity in waste management, particularly in tourist areas. The program includes condition analysis, increasing women's involvement in household waste management, empowering economically unproductive communities, and fostering partnerships with relevant stakeholders. The program employs a women’s empowerment approach through training and mentoring. The outcomes include the publication of an accredited journal and the development of an independent household waste management system. Abstract

This study explores the increasing trend of traveling outdoors after the COVID-19 pandemic. There is still limited research in Indonesia exploring the role of multisensory experiences on tourists’ mental health benefits. Two main theories are used “the Attention Restorative Theory (ATR) and the Theory of Grounded Cognition, as the basis for developing the research model. This study aims to analyze the impact of the multisensory experience of outdoor tourism on place attachment, the perception of environmental restoration, and the perception of mental health benefits. This study examined 278 respondents who visited city parks and outdoor tourist sites in Yogyakarta and its surroundings. Using quantitative approaches and PLS statistical tools, it was found that the influence of multisensory experiences affects place attachment, perception of environmental restoration, and mental health benefits. The perception of environmental restoration also affects the mental health benefits. Only place attachment does not affect the mental health benefits of visiting outdoor destinations.  The implication for marketing strategies is that tourism should be designed to provide mental health benefits or balance between physical and mental health.
