Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the associative meanings used in Dompak Sinaga’s Love Song Lyrics, describe the application of associative meanings on the lyrics, and explain the reason for using the most dominant types of associative meaning in Dompak Sinaga’s Love Song Lyrics. The study was conducted using a textual analysis. The data of the study was taken from the lyrics of Dompak Sinaga’s Love Song in the form of written text. The data analysis was taken by coding and theme developing based on the theory proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings indicated that all the types of associative meaning are found in Dompak Sinaga’s Love Song Lyrics. Based on the research results, the most frequently types that found are connotative meaning and affective meaning. The types of associative meaning in Dompak Sinaga’s Love songs used in different ways. Connotative meaning used using art in the Batak language. The social meaning used by showing or introducing cultural customs which are the songwriter's social background. Affective meaning used by conveyed the songwriter's feelings. Reflected meaning used by conveyed words or lyrics that have multiple conceptual meanings in Batak Toba culture. Collocative meaning used by conveyed words or lyrics that are in the same ‘environment’. The reason to used the dominant types of associative meaning are to make the lyrics of the songs sound softer, to avoid the monotonous and to deliver the message of the songs.

Abstract

The study deals with the satire in Javanese traditional proverb. The objectives of the study were to find out the kinds of satire in Javanese traditional proverb and the use of those proverbs. The research method of this study is textual research. The data of this study were taken from fourty Javanese traditional proverbs that have been choosen before. The data of this research were analyzed by using Alviani’s theory. The researcher found there are sixteen proverbs included in irony, fourteen proverbs included in cynicism, nine proverbs included in sarcasm and one proverb included in satire type. The used of satire in Javanese proverb is to express the opinion, advice, purpose or idea in a figurative language to avoid someone gets hurt and hope that someone can be better.Keywords: Javanese, Proverb, Satire

Abstract

The research is about feminism in the film “Erin Brockovich”. This study aims at identifying what the type and the principles of the feminism found in Erin Brockovich’sFilm. This study is conducting by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data is taken from the film and script. The techniques for analyzing the data are descriptive qualitative research. The writer uses Tong’s Theory to analyze the type of feminism and Sadli’s Theory to analyze the principles of feminism. This film is based on a true story; Erin Brockovichdescribes a single mother of three children who succeed in lawsuit office that helps many people of the PG&E case in Hingkley. The role of Erin shows a super mother who can be equal both take care of her children and succeeds in her career. The results of this research show that there are 30 dialogues and scenes it refers to Liberal Feminism. Then, from 50 dialogues and scenes, it was found there are all out of four types of the principles of feminism, they are: daring to convey a different opinion, having clearer aspirations and ambitions, having a desired social status, and daring tocompete.

Abstract

In this social condition, it is undeniable that cases of discrimination still dominate actions that are still widely felt by individuals, or groups of people.  This discriminatory attitude is still often found in social, cultural, school and work life. This study aimed at identifying the kinds of racial discrimination in Illustration and dialog of script and movie biographies about Harriet Tubman and what are Nigger's resistance toward those discriminations in the movie.  This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data were taken from the script. The research instrument was the researcher herself by using a tool including laptop and books. The results of this research showed that in Harriet movie, there were five types of discrimination with the total of verbal antagonist (37,037%), avocation (18,518%), segregation (37,037%), physical attack (7,4071%). Racial discrimination is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, and finally discrimination found as the most dominant thing that the depict racism in the movie.
