Abstract

The study dealed with the taboo words used on Instagram video. The objectives of this study were to identify the types and the effect of taboo words uttered by tiur in his videos on Instagram. The sources of the data were taken from the videos of Tiur Anak Medan on Instagram. This is descriptive qualitative because this study focuses on the analysis of spoken language in social media. This study uses the theory of Batistella as the main theory which explain four types of taboo words, such as Epithets, Profanity, Obscenity and Vulgarity. After anylizing the data, there were 22 taboo words found in the videos. Ephitets was the most dominant taboo words found, then it was followed with obscenity which standed as the second types which the most found and the last vulgarity and profanity had the same number and the least found. Moreover, for the second analysis, It was found that the taboo words became the common words since they were used by the public figure. The taboo words were not the taboo anymore.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the kind politeness strategy in request which represented in Traditional Market. The descriptive qualitative method used to gain the findings of the data itself. From the findings, 11 requests from 7 speakers have been analyzed. And from those, 21 requests filtered through transcribing the event. Of all 21 requests, it was found that there were 2 politeness strategies used, they were Bald-On record 32 (32%), and Positive Politeness 11 (1,21%) and offRecord16 (5,6%). Later on, the positive politeness was the dominant type of politeness since the traditional market was a full of bargaining, the using of positive politenesswould be found in many ways. The instrument of this study was recording the eventand transcribing them into list. And from that list, the categorization would be easy to extract the data. Thus the writer found that positive politeness that used also similar to another local traditional market.

Abstract

This study discussed about conversational style and preference structure in Deddy Corbuzier’s Podcast: Anies Baswedan Episode. The objectives of the study were to find the conversational style used by Deddy Corbuzier and Anies Baswedan in the podcast, the preference structure used by Anies Baswedan as the second speaker, and the dominant types of preference structure used in the podcast. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. This study used the theories from Tannen (2005) about conversational style and Levinson (1983) about preference structure. The results of this study can be concluded as: First, the conversational style used by the speakers was high-involvement style (personal topic, faster rate of speech, tell more stories, and used higher pitch). Second, the types of preference structure used by Anies Baswedan as the second speaker was preferred responses or positives responses (expected answer, agreement for assessment, and agreement for proposal). Third, the dominant types of preference structure occurred in the podcast was preferred responses because Anies Baswedan didn’t use longer pauses and delay, used faster turn-taking, gives more stories, active speaker, and produces expected answer. In a talk show, a host must be dominant in expressing ideas, opinions, or questions to the guest star. So, the speaker can freely express their thoughts and answer any questions asked by the host properly. The conversational style of an active, precise, and interesting host will also produce good responses from the guest star.

Abstract

This study deals with translation technique in Alani Hapogoson movie. The aims of the study are to analyze the techniques used in translating the movie, to find the most dominant one used in translating the movie and describe the most dominant one in translating the movie. It uses the six theory of Molina and Albir, which are adaptation, calque, compensation, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression and literal translation. In analyzing the data, the research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Sahat’s utterances in “Alani Hapogoson movie” which consist of Batak Toba and Bahasa. In Sahat’s Utterances of Alani Hapogoson movie the result of literal translation 117 sentences (96%) belongs to dominant technique that applied in the movie, followed by calque 3 sentences (2,46%) and compensation 2 sentences (1,64%) takes from six techniques. There are three process in translating the dominant technique 1) analysis, 2) transfer and 3) restructuring.

Abstract

The study deals with the satire in Javanese traditional proverb. The objectives of the study were to find out the kinds of satire in Javanese traditional proverb and the use of those proverbs. The research method of this study is textual research. The data of this study were taken from fourty Javanese traditional proverbs that have been choosen before. The data of this research were analyzed by using Alviani’s theory. The researcher found there are sixteen proverbs included in irony, fourteen proverbs included in cynicism, nine proverbs included in sarcasm and one proverb included in satire type. The used of satire in Javanese proverb is to express the opinion, advice, purpose or idea in a figurative language to avoid someone gets hurt and hope that someone can be better.Keywords: Javanese, Proverb, Satire

Abstract

The study deals with Feminism in Veronica Roth’s Movie “Divergent” from three women character. The objective of the study were to find out the types of feminism and the roles of women in Divergent movie. The research method of this study used qualitative research, relying on the analysis and description of previous researcher and the studies of feminism. The data of this study were the utterances that can be found out from the script of divergent movie. The data of this research were analyzed by using Tong’s theory. The researcher found there are 3 types of feminism in three women character in Divergent movie, they are : 5 statements that are included in liberal feminism, 12 statements are included in radical feminism, and 3 statements are included in anarchist feminism. The role of women that can be found from three women character in Divergent movie was the role of women in domestic sector and the role of women in public sector.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an Android-based application as a learning medium for student exercises containing audio on popular cultures to practice their English listening skills. This research method used research and development with the ADDIE model, namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data was collected using a questionnaire for validators. A questionnaire was used to collect data for the application, material, and learning practitioner. In the development stage, the validators declare that this product was very valid and practical. It was shown that the scores given by the English lecturers were 91,4 and 90,4, and the Programmer validator gave it 94. Meanwhile, the average score collected from the practical sheet was 90. After the digital listening application was revised and evaluated, this product was stated as effective, showing that 4 students were in the B2-Upper Intermediate level, 12 students are in C1-Advance, 8 students were in C2-Proficient and no more students in the intermediate level. This app was appropriate for students to use as a platform to practice their listening skills outside the class.
