Abstract

This research aimed to identify the kinds of error in the use of Past Tense in writing recount text and the dominant error made by the Second Year Students of SMP Unismuh Makassar. This research is Case Study Research. The research was conducted in SMP Unismuh Makassar. The population was the Second Year Students in Academic Year 2013-2014. The researcher took Class B1 which consists of 19 students.The instrument used was writing test. Writing test was used to find out the kinds of errors made by the students in writing recount text. By using this instrument, the researcher analyzed detail information about the errors in the use of Past Tense in writing recount text. The students' errors were classified into four categories based on the kinds of error. Those are the error of omition with 12 errors, error of addition with 31 errors, error of misformation with 166 errors, and error of misordering with 5 errors. The students made the dominant error in misformation category. It can be seen from the percentage result where misformation were 77,57%, then followed error of addition were 14,48%, error of omition was 5,61%, and misordering were only 2,34%. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Second Year Students(Class B1) of SMP Unismuh Makassar had many errors in writing recount text. The students should be given intensive exercises in the use of Past Tense in writing recount text.  It is quite necessary for the Second Year Students and the English Teacher of SMP Unismuh Makassar to be informed about the result of this research, so they can improve their teaching learning process.Keywords: Error Analysis, recount text, Past Tense, error of misformation.

Abstract

This research aimed to explain the improved of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with main idea and details and summarizing dealing with content and logical order. A classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was taken at X students of SMA Gunung Sari Makassar with a number of the subject were 20 students. The research findings indicate that the application of Three Minute Pause strategy was significant in improving the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension and summarizing. It was proved by the mean score of the cycle I was 6.88then increased to be 7.87 in cycle II. They were higher than the mean score of diagnostic test namely 4.77. It means that there was the improved of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with main idea and details and summarizing dealing with content and logical order.Keywords: literal comprehension; action research; strategy; content; logical order

Abstract

This research aims to find the improvement of the students’ reading in literal comprehension especially main idea and supporting idea in reading comprehension use of ISTART Strategy at Class VIII.5 of SMPN 2 Sungguminasa in the 2012/2013 Academic Year. The researcher used a Classroom Action Research (C.A.R). It was consisted of two cycles. In each cycle consisted of four meetings. The research subject was the students in class VIII.5; it consisted of 35 students with 18 men and 17 women. The researcher obtained the data by using reading test and observation sheet. The research findings indicates that using ISTART Strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension, from table 1 indicated that there was improvement the students’ Main Idea from cycle I to cycle II, where as in cycle I the students’ achievement main idea in reading was 6.65, but after evaluation in cycle II the students’ main idea in reading became 7.36. The other hand the students’ supporting idea in reading was improved cycle I to cycle II, where as in cycle I the students’ supporting idea in reading was 6.78 but after evaluation in cycle II the students’ supporting idea in reading became 7.38. It means that the use ISTART Strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension at VIII.5 Class of the second year students of SMPN 2 Sungguminasa.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the improvement of the students’  ability in translating English into Indonesian especially for Recount text in terms of the meaning and style of the original text. The researcher used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) to explain the improvement, which was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was taken in the second year of Junior High School 2 Sungguminasa with the number of the subject i.e. 36 students. The research findings indicate that the application of Duff’s Principles is significant in improving the students’ translating ability in terms of meaning and style of the original text. It is proved by the mean score of the cycle I is 60.27 then improved to be 72.49 in cycle II. They are higher than the mean score of diagnostic test namely 56.45. It means that there is the improvement of the students’ translating ability in terms of meaning and style of the original text.Keyword: Ability, translating, English, Indonesian, Duff, principle

Abstract

Since the outbreak of Covid 19 in Indonesia, all universities, including Universitas  Muhammadiyah Makassar, had made a decision for lecturers and students to learn from home (LFH) since March 16, 2020. This decision certainly has an impact on the change of the learning process which is used to face-to-face in the classroom then drastically changed and become online learning. This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of online learning on the Academic Writing course in the English Education Study Program. Pre-experimental design is the method where the sample is purposively chosen. The data is collected by giving pre-test and post-test and questionnaire. The study reveals that students get better writing skills after learning online. It can be seen that the pretest is 50.6 becomes 75.8 in the posttest. Meanwhile, after calculating the t-test it is also found that the effectiveness of online learning on Academic Writing Course through Google Meet is 55%. It is then concluded that online learning using Google Meet on Academic Writing Course has a positive effect on students' writing skills.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the improvement of student reading comprehension in narrative text through using Partner Reading Strategy at in the 8th Grade of SMP Unismuh Makassar. This research applied Pre-Experimental Method. The research had conducted with treatment, where the class consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was done at the second Grade students’ of SMP Unismuh Makassar with 24 student, the instrument used pre-test and post-test The findings indicated that the application of Partner Reading Strategy is significant to improve the students reading comprehension and it was proved by means score in pre-test was 49. 72 and the post-test was 81.77. It means that the mean score of post-test is greater than the pre-test, and also it is can be concluded that the use of Partner Reading Strategy improved the students’ reading comprehension especially literal comprehension in term main idea and reorganization in term summary

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the validity of National Examination’s item 2019 in English Subject in reading skill in SMA Negeri Matakali, KabupatenPolewali Mandar.The research used descriptive quantitative method. The subject of this research is English teacher at SMA NegeriMatakali, Lesson plan of English, Curriculum 2013 and National examination’s document in English subject 2019. The data of the research was taken by using document analysis and interview. The result of this research showed 11 of 50 question’s item in National examination in English subject 2019 are in line with English materials which are taught in SMA Class XII at first semester. It means 22% from the total number of National Examination.

Abstract

The research aims to ‘The Psycholinguistic Analysis of the Students Problem in Speaking English at Third Semester of Fkip Muhammadiyah Makassar University in the Academic Year Of 2020/2021. In this research, the researcher used the Qualitative research method. The researcher used Purposive Sampling technique to determine the sample. The researcher chose the third semester as sample that consisted of 30 students. In collecting data, the researcher used observation and interview. Based on the result of the research, the researcher found that the psychological problems of the students were fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, nervous of facing new guy(anxiety), and factors caused the problems were bad pronunciation, low vocabulary, worry of people think, fear of judging. Those result were proved the previous related studies which Fitriani et al (2005), Xinghua (2007) claimed that students’ psychological problems were fear of making, lack of confidence and anxiety, which caused factors were bad pronounce, low in grammar and vocabulary, but they didn’t claimed as same as the researcher found that fear of judging and worry of people think were caused the students’ feeling anxiety and feeling not confidence when they speaking in English.

Abstract

 This research aims to find out whether Duolingo Application can improve the vocabulary of the students especially in verb (transitive and intransitive verbs) in Second Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Kelara. The researcher applied Pre-Experimental Method by using one group pre-test and post-test design and collected data by giving pre-test and post-test. The sample for this research was Class VIII.3 of SMP Negeri 1 Kelara  that consisted of 18 students. The sample was taken by using Purposive Sampling Technique and the data was analyzed by using IBM SPSS statistics version 26. Based on the research findings, the improvement of students' vocabulary by using the Duolingo Application in second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Kelara was good, because before using the Duolingo application the average score of students was 27.22, but after the students used the Duolingo application, the average score of students increased to 76.78. This significant improvement occurred because the Duolingo Application gave a good effect in teaching vocabulary. The Duolingo Application can make student learning more enjoyable because Duolingo can help students easily acquire new words with interesting picture features to understand the meaning of words. This makes students more active and enthusiastic in improving vocabulary. Therefore, based on these results, it is recommended to use the Duolingo Application in improving students' vocabulary especially in verbs.

Abstract

The research aimed to find out how students’ perception and its’ influence toward students’ speaking performance.  There were two types of perception recorded, namely self-perception and exteroception. Self-perception is a perception that is formed based on internal factors or from within , while exteroception is a perception that is formed based on external factors or from outside of a person . The research methodology  used was quantitative research. The data obtained using two instruments, namely close-ended questionnaire and students’ speaking performance score.  The data were analysed through Multiple Linear Regression Analysis . The results of data analysis from 46 samples found that 1) Students’ self-perception (72.09) and exteroception (67.85) categorized as good perception, 2) Simultaneously, self-perception and exteroception has significance influence toward speaking performance (F-test 8.73 > F-table 4.07). 3) Self-perception has significance influence toward speaking performance (T-test 2.347 > T-table 2.014), and Exteroception has no significance influence toward speaking performance   (T-test 0.590 < T-table 2.014).  Therefore, it can be concluded that students’ self-perception has the higher score than students’ exteroception. Simultaneously, both them were have significance influence toward speaking performance, while partially self-perception was the only variable has significance influence toward speaking performance. The needs and desires of students toward speaking were dominated positively. They need English speaking for their future career, which indirectly becomes motivation in speaking class.
