Abstract

This present study highlights the implementation of teacher multimodal feedback provision in speaking classes, especially students’ preferences and voices after obtaining teacher feedback. Teacher multimodal feedback was implemented in one semester (14 weeks) in two speaking classes with 36 students majoring English Language Department of a university in Malang, Indonesia. A questionnaire using a 4 Likert scale and an open-ended option was distributed to all respondents, and an in-depth interview was conducted with ten of them where five students represented each class. The data which were analyzed quantitatively indicate that students have different preferences in receiving teacher feedback, and they believe that teacher multimodal feedback is beneficial to improve their L2 oral productions. Direct feedback is the type they like most, but interruption is the mode of feedback they hate most. Some indications also suggest that teachers need to construct positive teacher-student social relationships in the classrooms. Some implications are also discussed.

Abstract

Education in the pandemic era has forced teachers and students to face multiple challenges in learning. Student engagement in distance learning has become a recent issue in EFL teaching. Preliminary investigations suggest that both synchronous and asynchronous learning will be less beneficial without student active involvement in the learning process. In fact, engaged students can achieve better since they are highly motivated and passionate about attaining the learning outcomes. Observations and qualitative surveys were conducted to investigate student autonomous motivation in studying Psycholinguistics online. The participants were currently trained to be EFL teachers at a private university in Indonesia. Therefore, as prospective teachers, it was assumed that the students had possessed sufficient motivation and autonomy before being enrolled in the course. However, the results of the study showed that the students struggled to understand the materials taught in the Psycholinguistics course since it required a lot of independent reading. Group work was not very effective in improving student achievement in the classroom, yet group presentation allowed students to exchange ideas, share experiences with peers and improve understanding of a particular subject matter.

Abstract

The online teaching-learning process mainly means the absence of physical interaction between teachers and students. In this context, the existence of the Web. 2.0-based technologies is expected to bridge the distance between teacher-student and student-student communication. Somehow, it will be a big problem if the teachers do not administer online learning well and appropriately. The facts show that online learning still faces some obstacles, such as the quality of the Internet connection and teacher-student and student-student interaction, including the media applied in the teaching-learning process. Thus, the present community service that involved 30 teachers of elementary schools aims at empowering the teachers with the ability to create interactive media. This activity covers briefing, lecture, demonstration, and workshop on interactive media, such as PowerPoint Presentation (PPT) with voice, Kahoot, and Padlet. The results demonstrate that teachers believe that interactive online learning is not as complicated as they thought and applied in the classrooms.

Abstract

Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of digital mind-mapping in improving student learning outcomes, creativity, critical thinking skills, and motivation. However, past studies rarely focused on student engagement when exploring the implementation of collaborative digital mind mapping in higher education. This study explored student engagement in a digital mind-mapping-supported collaborative classroom. The study was qualitative descriptive in nature, involving twenty fourth-semester students from a private university in Indonesia. The data were collected through observation and interview. The findings showed that students engaged cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally in the collaborative mind-mapping activity. The findings mostly describe student-student and student-task engagement. Therefore, further investigations are needed to examine student-teacher engagement in a mind-mapping-supported collaborative learning setting.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study aimed to explore student engagement and student responses towards using Telegram in the ESP classroom. The participants consisted of 66 students from a private university in Indonesia. They were selected using a purposive sampling method. This study was conducted in a fully online mode class. This study also identified various ways in which assignments and student-to-student/teacher-student relationships in online learning environments can trigger student responses. An observation checklist and an interview guideline were used in data collection, and the theory of student engagement as a controlled action was employed in data analysis. The teaching practice of using Telegram in online classes seems to trigger various constructive responses and lively discussions. The discussion activity was mostly initiated by the teacher or the students who intended to ask questions or clarify an idea. This study shows that the use of Telegram in ESP classrooms contributes to a significant increase in students’ engagement, interaction, motivation, and collaboration online.  Despite its limitations, Telegram has proven its benefits to be used for improving students' interaction and engagement during language learning. Language learning is more enjoyable for both the students and teachers by incorporating Telegram in the ESP classrooms. In conclusion, this study presents the importance of technology integration in education, which makes learning more effective and empowering.

Abstract

Terminator 1 is a 1984 science fiction movie about a robot who is sent from the future to kill a person named Sarah Connor, because her son is destined to lead humanity in the war against robots. The movie shows the futuristic depiction of AI technology and their potential capabilities as weapons. The rapid development of AI had also raised some concerns at the time with people worrying about AI being more than capable of surpassing humanity. Although the concept of AI gaining sentience is merely fiction, the application of AI as weapons is something that has become more real with each passing day. This study explores the concept of AI in Terminator 1 using Poiesis or the creation of new ideas from old ones to see how the movie has inspired the evolution of AI in the modern world. Additionally, this study aims to describe the movie's portrayal of AI and compare it to modern AI technology in real life. Through this study we found that the nature of AI is depicted accurately within the movie’s time of release. However, the applications of AI technology were still fictitious.

Abstract

Effective communication is crucial in healthcare for ensuring patient safety, improving outcomes, and enhancing satisfaction. This study examined healthcare communication through the lens of applied linguistics, focusing on themes outlined by Candlin and Candlin (2003), including interpreters, narratives, risk, patient-practitioner interactions, and critical accounts. Interviews with seven healthcare practitioners in Indonesia and Finland reveal challenges such as language diversity and limited access to interpreter services, leading to reliance on informal strategies like gestures and family involvement. The findings highlight the importance of cultural competence in bridging communication gaps, emphasizing its role in addressing patient needs and fostering trust. Additionally, the study underscores the potential of therapeutic communication training and technology-driven solutions, such as telehealth interpreting services, to enhance healthcare interactions. By integrating linguistic insights, the research advocates for collaborative, multidisciplinary efforts to improve communication practices in diverse healthcare settings. Future studies should explore cultural competence training and innovative technological approaches to address language-related challenges in healthcare.
