Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an effect of implementing Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) based on Augmented Reality in developing students’ spatial visualization abilities and geometric reasoning on solid geometry material for eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Bandar Pulau. This research used a quasi-experimental method with a Two Group Pre-Test and Post-Test research design. The population of this study consisted of all eighth-grade classes, totaling four classes. The research sample consisted of two classes selected through purposive sampling determined by the school. The control class used the CTL learning model, while the experimental class used Augmented Reality-based contextual learning. After the learning process was completed, the post-test results showed that the average score of the experimental class was 71.696 and the control class was 67.048. The results of the t-test obtained t_count = 1.708 > t_table = 1.669, therefore Hₐ was accepted. In addition, this study also used questionnaires to measure students’ perceptions of Augmented Reality-based contextual learning. The questionnaire results indicated that the majority of students gave positive responses toward the use of AR in learning. A total of 42.9% of students strongly agreed and 43.4% agreed that contextual learning with AR made the learning process more interesting, enjoyable, and helpful in understanding solid geometry concepts. Thus, it can be concluded that there is an effect on students’ learning outcomes through the use of Augmented Reality-based contextual learning in developing students’ 3D visualization abilities and geometric reasoning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ emotional regulation based on gender in solving word problems on fraction material. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 27 seventh-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Aek Kuasan, consisting of 16 male students and 11 female students . Data were collected through tests, questionnaires, observations, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that students' emotional regulation was categorized into high, medium, and low levels. Most students were in the medium category (40.7%), followed by high (29.6%) and low (29.6%) categories . Based on gender, female students tended to have better emotional regulation than male students, as indicated by a higher percentage in the high category. These findings indicate that emotional regulation plays an important role in helping students remain calm, focused, and systematic in solving mathematical word problems. Therefore, emotional aspects should be considered in mathematics learning, especially when dealing with complex problems.

Abstract

This study analysed the effectiveness of Malay ethnomathematics-based mathematics learning using the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach on the numeracy literacy of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Kisaran. A quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design was employed. The participants were 64 students, consisting of an experimental class (n = 32) and a control class (n = 32). The experimental class learned through PMRI activities using Malay-Asahan cultural contexts, including traditional market transactions, songket motifs, local measurements, and daily community practices, whereas the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected using essay-based numeracy literacy tests validated by experts and tried out before implementation. The results showed that the two classes had comparable initial ability (pretest means of 52.3 and 51.8; Sig. = .803). After the treatment, the experimental class achieved a higher posttest mean score (81.4) than the control class (70.2). The independent samples t-test indicated a significant difference (t = 5.42; df = 62; Sig. < .001) with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.36). The experimental class N-gain (0.61) was also higher than the control class N-gain (0.38). These findings indicate that Malay ethnomathematics-based PMRI effectively improves students’ numeracy literacy.
